120 Minute Ale, bottled on 7/08/08 and consumed on 6/14/10.
Served in DFH signature glass
A: Pours murky amber with brown lowlights. Head and lacing are unimpressive, which is to style. No effervescence is detectable.
S: Pureed golden raisins, nail polish remover/solvent, candy sugar, alcohol and some burnt caramel.
T: Super sweet on front of palate, mixed with golden raisins and burnt caramel/brown sugar. Dried apricots. Mild bitterness. Nail polish remover/solvent and fusels figure prominently and detract from taste. The sweetness becomes cloying as I work my way through bottle.
M: Big body and mild carbonation result in syrupy mouthfeel. Mouthcoating and obvious warming.
O: Despite its obvious deficiencies, 120 Minute Ale has some charm if it is compared to English Barleywines and high-octane doppelbocks. Perhaps more aging would iron out 120 Minute Ale's flaws and propel it to the upper echelon of big abv beers. At 3 years, almost all hops, both aromatic and bittering, are a distant memory, allowing sweetness to run rampant and booze to be unchecked.
