Had at Dogfish Head's Brewpub after touring the brewery in Milton. Of course you have to try the pub-exclusives. The recipe changes significantly each year, so I added a new entry for 2013. This year's 2nd batch recipe included tart and sweet cherries, fennel, and yeast all from various sources in Delaware. Really a cool story behind the beer.
Served in a small pokal; slightly hazy ruby-orange with a thin disc of foam. Smelled of tart cherries, some herbal spice, yeast, and grainy malt. Taste started off with crisp malt, moved into sweet/tart cherry pretty quickly, with some herbal notes I couldn't quite identify. I don't know what fennel tastes like, so this must have been that. Finished with crisp malt, mostly dry, with hints of the cherries and herbs hanging around slightly. Mouthfeel was fizzy, very lively carbonation, great for a saison. Overall, while saisons might not be my favorite style, this was still a good beer, and went just fine with my burger.
