A beautiful mahogany, purple pour. A pinkish red where the beer meets the foam.

Smell is chocolate covered cherries.

Taste has a surprising sour kick. Really well done. Not too acidic. Quite fruity.

Overall, a surprisingly refined and delicious beer. Love the sour notes on this one when I wasn't expecting it.

Best before 9/30/15.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson red with a foamy reddish-tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly tart with black cherry, cherry juice, and cherry pie filling aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet and sour cherry juice, cherry pie filling, and cherry soda flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice balance of sweet and sour cherry characteristics that make this one tasty and very easy to drink.

Pours a first for me in a beer, a murky, muted burgundy-ruby red hybrid color producing a pinkish, foamy, somewhat lived head leaving only a few wisps & motes of lacing. Aroma is sweet, vinous but ripe fruit cherry, reminiscent of tart cherry pie & cherry soda, undertones of malty caramel & brown sugar. Tastes is sweet cherry soda, tart cherry pie, cranberry &,a subdued dark fruitiness that leans mostly toward plum; the brown sugar & caramel are there but buried deeply under the fruit with a Sweet-Tart candy, musty finish. No hop presence. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation, mouth puckering tartness in the finish, a sandy prickle that can be felt in the back all the way into the throat, juicy wet into finish but drying in the aftertaste.

Poured from bottle into Barbe glass (both from Christmas gift pack)

A: The beer pours a hazy medium dark red, with a thin cap of white head which lingers. The beer exhibited some nice lacing on the glass.

S: The smell is a strong cherry smell, rich ripe fruit. No discernible malt or hop aromas. Unlike another beer I tried in the this gift pack, this beer luckily did not have vinegary notes. The smell was overall pleasant.

T: The initial taste is very pleasant, with strong cherry taste to match the smell. In the middle of a sip, the cherry gives way to a powerful tartness which is not as pleasant, and finishes with a pine-like hop aftertaste, which did not seem to match with the cherry flavors. There were no discernible malt flavors, this could have been a fermented cherry juice for all the malt flavor (none) present.

F: Prickly, effervescent carbonation. Light and refreshing.

O: Better than another cherry or sour beer I sampled from the same brewery, but still not really my cup of tea (mug of beer?). It probably falls well inside the style it claims to be (kriek) but again, not a huge fan of the style.

On tap at The Lark in East Northport, NY: Pours ruby red with a 1 finger tan head that faded slowly and left minimal spotty lacing.

Smells like black cherry soda, brown sugar, caramel, cherry, fruity candy and sweet juice like a fruit punch Juicy Juice. It smells really damn good, nice and fruity but not cloyingly sweet.

Tastes like it smells and is just like a black cherry soda, with a mix of strong cherry, plum and other dark fruits, brown sugar, caramel, fruity candy like Skittles and Razzles, fruit punch Juicy Juice, and a slight tart sour pucker in the finish. It may be a little too sweet but is still very tasty with complex fruity flavors, and a nice mix of fruit that also brings in nice some malty sweetness and a slight sour finish. The fruit tastes real and not artificial.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a watery feel, a sweet mild sourness that is slightly bitter yet its still very tasty. Overall a very good and unique beer that was really well done for a fruit beer. I liked it so much that I ordered a second glass and several of my friends tried it and agreed that it tasted like a black cherry soda, was quite different and enjoyable for a beer and one of them even ordered their own glass. Very un-beer like, but a good change of pace brew.

This pours a deep maroon color with a pinkish head. The aroma is sweet, tart and bursting with cherry flavors. The taste is sweet, smooth and full of cherries. It’s not as rich or bursting with flavor as I would have imagined but it is still fairly decent for the style.

This is a glass that looks fine with a super red color and a very fast fading pink head. The smell is just awful! It smells like super cheap strawberry licorice and the taste, while still has a very sweet strawberry character follows the nose albeit a bit more tolerable. Very strawberry soda in all respects. For some people this very sweet beer may be appealing. For a "beer person" this may well be undrinkable.

This is a fun fruit beer. I did expect it to be tasty. The cherry is "bright". I'm really new at rating. I don't want to go crazy. If I'm off, show a little grace. Mouthful to me would be the ease of flow and amount of thick malt feel, this runs a little thin. Head, radish and came up on the pour, thinned out pretty quick, no real aftertaste other than the fruit. Warm and bready long aftertaste. Warm on the alcohol. Great hot day early afternoon beer or skip dessert and have this after ribs.

A: dark ruby colour; very active but not a big head

S: cherry, but not overtly sweet, also some crispyness, plums and blueberry

T: a lot of sweet cherry, not much else

M: rather flat, not a lot of alcohol, okay

O: as far as cherrybeer goes not overtly sweet but still sweeter than I like. Not complex but okay.

Pours a red color with a pink head. The aroma is full of overripe cherry bordering on syrup. In the taste, sweet cherry, table sugar, and a very slight tartness. This is much more of a mainstream fruit beer than anything else. Medium bodied and quite sugary. Overall this is an O.K. Belgian fruit beer at the very best but pretty much cloying. Cough syrup is the closest comparison, needs more sourness. Disappointing, especially since they produce the fantastic Duchesse de Bourgogne in the same brewery.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a crimson red color and a thick texture. There was an inch and a half of fizzy, off-white, somewhat long-lasting head. Not a whole lot of lacing.

S: A big aroma of cherries (no surprise there) and a bracingly sour component.

T: Tasted of black cherries (a lot of black cherries), a little malt and the sour element. This is an slightly odd flavor, but somehow enjoyable. It's almost like a cherry soda and beer had a baby. Interesting.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a sour, sharp finish. Light- to medium-bodied.

O: Not surprisingly, this is not a beer for everyone. It's kind of a strange one, and not in keeping with the style, but pretty drinkable nonetheless.

Taking a break from the common Flemish sour taste, this time its those rich and tasty indigenous cherries of Belgium that hold their own. With a monotone Belgian beer taste underneath, its the unadulterated fruit that takes command early and often in Barbe Ruby.

And indeed "ruby" it pours, capturing the color of cherry in its dark rouge and crimson saturation. And once the ale embarks upon the nose and palate, the intense cherry character overwhelms the senses. Strong black cherry saturates the palate early and often, introducing more succulent fruits of blackberry, plum and red grape.

On the middle, the cherry sweetness and weight acts like lifesaver candies, the cherry flavored ones of course, but also offering up the moderate fruit acidity to balance its sweetness and to give a mild cider-like and cabernet-like complexity.

As its sweet finish quivers slightly, the continued tang of cranberry, tart apple and under-ripened raspberry continues to balance the malt and fruit sweetness as they highlight a malty-dry finish. Its playful tartness never reaches astringency while a dessert-like candied taste lingers deeply after.

As tantalizing as the cherry flavors are, they are obviously dedicated however somewhat one-dimensional and unable to dry to complete satisfaction in finish. Its also hard to shake the notions of cough drops and syrups as well. Even though there's no artificial flavors about the ale, its candied character limits its drinkability.

A nice fruity summertime beer. Poured into my Grape and Gourmet store tulip from a 330 ml bottle. Fizzy pink head that dies fast and a brownish hazy body that lets in ruby tones when held to a light. Head retention and lacing are slim to none.

Smell is of sweet black cherries. Fairly potent and pleasant.

Taste is very good. The initial sip is sweet black cherries in a malty beer. The next sip introduces a mild, pleasant "sweet tarts" tartness to go along with the black cherry flavor. Very nice.

Mouthfeel is light crisp and tart. No hint of the 7% plus abv. If this was served in a Big Gulp cup, I would drink the whole thing.

Well worthwhile for sipping on a warm day.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 9/30/2015. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big tart cherry, cherry skin, blackberry, red grape, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with big tart cherry and fruity yeast presence with moderate sweetness; and good strength. Taste of big tart cherry, cherry skin, blackberry, red grape, herbal, straw, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart cherry, cherry skin, blackberry, red grape, herbal, straw, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and big robustness of tart cherry fruits and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a good sweetness/tartness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very slick, moderately syrupy, and lightly acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an damn nice Belgian kriek. All around great robustness, balance, and complexity of tart cherry fruit with moderate fruity yeast ester notes; and very smooth to sip on with the fairly balanced tartness. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours a crimson/brown with a pinky pinkish/tan head. Nice purple colors when illuminated. Head falls off quickly, near zero head retention & lacing

S: Strong cherry notes, some berry notes

T: Some cherry, blackcurrant & raspberry notes, with tartness up front. Slight jammy notes as this warms, black cherry sweetness, somewhat reminds of fresh cherry juice Like I used to buy in Colorado. Finishes dry, tart with berry & cherry notes

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation

A decent beer for the style, a little too sweet, drinks easy, ABV is well hidden. Needs more tartness & is a bit too clean tasting

A: Dark brown body that only allows hints of red when held directly to a light. The head is a very delightful unsaturated purple and pink color with tiny bubbles that leave some lacing on the glass.

S: It smells of fresh sweet smelling cherries. It's very one dimensional, but direct and to the point in a very pleasant manner. Wonderful. Despite its lack of complexity it does one thing, and one thing well. Cherry.

T: Sweetness covers the palate at first, like biting into a fresh sweet cherry. A tartness and mellow sourness quickly follows, leaving a bit of roughness on the back of the palate like drinking a glass of fresh cranberry juice. There is a hint of musty character that lingers but does not dominate. Slight residual tartness on the sides.

M: It has great carbonation and is very lively with its puckering sourness and pleasant sweetness.

O: Overall it is a very sweet kriek. I feel that it is important to declare that from the start as both a welcome and warning sign. As a kriek it is amazing. Wonderful flavor and aroma, great appearance in the glass, and just enough pop in the mouth. Again it is very sweet, so I would not recommend it to those who would shy away from a sweet "sour." I would happily drink it again if I could find it. I would not call it balanced, as it favors sweetness over sour. Quite a bit of overcompensation, but still very tasty.

Poured into a Lindemans stange. Pours a dark cherry red with a three finger light red head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma is pretty much pure cherry juice with slight tartness. Flavor follows, rich ripe and tart cherry juice and marzipan sweetness. Sweet to start, but finishing with a bright tartness. Light bodied with active carbonation. This a cherry kriek from top to bottom. Cherry dominates the flavor and gives a nice flavor progression from sweet to sour. The finish has a bit of astringent sourness that is an off-note, but otherwise quite enjoyable. Possibly the closest I've come in a beer to pure cherry juice. Not for the cherry averse. The ABV is totally covered and I could have been fooled into thinking I was drinking intense cherry juice.

330 ml bottle.

pours a bright ruby red with a huge head. the smell is MASSIVELY fruity...damn. the taste is so intensely sweet and fruity (strawberries, cherries) that it borders on undrinkable for me. im guessing this is how its supposed to be..but its just too sweet for me. medium bodied with high carbonation. too much carbonation in my opinion.

overall not for me. others may like it if they like an intensely sweet and fruity beer.
