A: garnet in color with a cream head that lasts through the entire experience. The head sticks to the glass in rings, marking your progress.

S: aroma consists of cherries along with the typical funkiness that comes with most sour ales. Overall, the bouquet is quite shy.

T: off-dry with hints of cherries, fruitcake, and sourness blending together for a delightful experience.

M: thin body with a decent amount of carbonation.

D: a delightful example of the flanders red style. Good for those looking to get in to sour ales, since this one is somewhat tame.

Purchased this as Vintage Estate in Boardman, OH. Couldn't wait to try this as I had been bred to expect the sour to eat my face off. While it wasn't really that sour, it was still damn solid.

Appears a very dark red with that great belgian head and lace.

Smells like nail polish at first! After you keep trying, you can get some sour apples though.

Taste isn't nearly as sour as the nose would have you believe, though you still get hints of something I can only describe as nail polish remover. The strange thing is, it works. Light sour ints of grape and apple.

Mouth is medium with relatively high carbonation.

This is a good beer and I look forward to trying it again, though I can't see where all the sour hype comes from! This is nothing to a Cantillion Kriek.

S: Funky. Like a weak vinegar. A bit on the unpleasant side.

T: Excellent balance of tartness and sweetness. Very flavoursome.

M: Medium feel and carbonation.

D: The 25cl bottles are far too small for this beer. Very drinkable.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a chestnut color with some ruby highlights seen shinning throughout. Upon pouring there is a small white head that fades relatively quickly leaving only a trace of lace.

Smell- The aroma is of dark fruit and sourness. The dark fruits are mainly of a cherry aroma, but have hints of raisin and prune mixed within. Along with these sweeter smells comes a good dose of a sour and tart aroma of a mix of apple cider vinegar mixed with some sour lemon.

Taste – The flavor of the brew is a nice blending of sweet and sour/tart. Upfront there is a good showing of a sweeter cherry flavor mixed with some lighter notes of sour grapes. As the flavor advances the sweetness fades slightly while the sour grape flavor grows stronger. Some hints of a yeasty taste begin coming to the tongue as well as a more sour and tart vinegar taste. In the end a rather balanced sweet and sour fruited vinegar flavor is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the brew is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather average to slightly below average. The thinner body and moderate carbonation are fantastic for keeping the brew on the more drinkable side, but while still providing enough body to support the sour and sweet flavors of the brew.

Overall – A very nice sour that is extremely drinkable and very tasty. One of the most balanced and enjoyable sours I have ever had.

750ml bottle poured in a Chimay chalice.

A: Amber color with a huge fluffy head. Good retention and some nice lacings left

S: Very fruity, grapes mainly. Malts and oak. Metallic. Smell of Lambic yeasts all around. Very Flamish Red Ale

T: Sweet and sour. Fruity. Malt, oak and Belgium yeasts. Reminds a Lambic

M: Light body. Very carbonated. Nice sour aftertaste

D: Delicious beer. Duchesse is something between a Faro Lambic and a Barley Wine. Quite easy drinking. Interesting experience. After the first glass I though: "too sweet and perhaps too 'winy'"... After the second glass I felt in love :p... Very drinkable, 750ml gone like water...

On tap @ the Beer Engine. This is my sweetheart's go-to beer for kegs and eggs! Gotta love that!!

Looks decent - reddish color with a nice small head. Just nothing outstanding.

Smell is good - for the style, I find this to be one of the more appetizing noses as some Flanders reds are rather putrid. This smells of vinegar, cherries, and oak.

Taste is also quite nice. Really sweet, with the balsamic vinegar and cherry notes dominating. I get a touch of belgian malt and some oak, also a hint of lemon - otherwise, it's a straight-ahead sour vinegary cherry fest of a beer.

Mouthfeel is this beer's strongest suit IMO. Light, crisp, and perfectly carbonated. The finish is rather remarkable as well.

Overall, I dig this beer, it's everything a Flanders Red should be. A touch too sweet for revisiting a few times in a sitting. But a nice sour and something that has served as a bridge into the genre for many.

From the 750ml caged cork bottle, attractively packaged with a nice portrait on the bottle. The wife commented on it, so it must be nice. Cork dated best by June 2008. Decants with a pop, into the cervoise, a dark ruby red with heavy carbonation of large bubbles cascading up. Thick, heavy head of tight bubbles, about one finger thick and going nowhere fast. Good, clingy sheet-like lacing. Nose dominated by a definite yet not overwhelming sour-cherry scent. A bit of musty, earthy yeast, and perhaps a hint of alcohol. I was prepared for a sour flavor explosion, but I was greeted instead by a subdued cherry-like tartness tempered by sweet malts, almost candy-like, but not overly sweet. Great sweet-tart cherry flavor; I’m constantly amazed that there is no fruit used in crafting this style. Mild hoppy bitterness on the backside, kind of apple Jolly Rancher finish. Mouth is of medium viscosity with tons of gentle carbonation making things go down smooth. Sticky, short of syrupy, but the sugar’s there nonetheless. Drinkability is quite good, surprisingly; I had no problem downing the bottle, something I never would have considered with Rodenbach’s Grand Cru.

Overall: OK, I’m not a huge fan of Flanders ales or lambics, but this one is understated enough to make me try more of the style. I consumed this sample a full year before the end of the “best by” date on the cork: I wonder what a bit of cellaring would yield. Grab one of these if you have a chance, definitely recommended.

Poured out of a 750ml bottle into a snifter.

appearance - dark and clear reddish brown, carbonation crawling up the side of the glass, big retention on the edge of the glass with yeast spotting on top, lacing crawls down the glass

smell - wine-like nose, vinegar, dark fruit, blended, sour, rich oak

taste - sour and tart cherries, sweet grape, yeast, rich oak barrel complexity

mouthfeel - heavily carbonated, full bodied, smooth, tingle from the carbonation

drinkability - remarkably complex, very rich and flavorful, the excessive carbonation and the initial vinegar in the nose are this beer's biggest flaws but the rest of the ale is very well crafted, amazing flavor and great value

second time drinking this beer. Time for a review. This is my first Flemish Red, but it seems to have

Appearance: Red. Tons of lace and decent head.
Smell: Funk. Cherries and sourness
Taste: it's really good. Be prepared if you've never had the style before because it's whole other beast from most other beers. You don't taste any hops. It's quite tart and sour like those sour candies. Beneath the sourness however is a malt backbone that is similar to a amber ale.
Mouthfeel: It's thin and watery but in a good way. I like the prickly carbonation on the tounge.
Drinkabiltly: this is a slow drinker despite the wateryness and relatively low alcohol.

This makes for a great summer beer. Take it slow so it goes from cold to cellar temp. This is the only flemish red I can find and i'll pounch on the chance to try another.

Deep bronze color and ruby when held to light. A few floating yeast flakes. Weakish head on the pour recedes quickly to a foamy corona aroma the rim of the glass. Leaves a few lace spots.

Soft, sweet and juicy dark fruit aroma.

Sweetish fruits: dates, prunes and raisins. No hop bitterness detected. Sharp vinegar tartness in the middle. Brown sugar sweetness lingers in the aftertaste. Mild spices and hint of toasty character. Well balanced. Finishes with a juicy overripe fruit character.

Medium bodied and highly carbonated. Finish is dry and texture is slick then sticky.

Pretty good. I'm growing accustomed to the style. I appreciate the complexity and wealth of flavors.

Split a 750ml bottle among a group.

A: very dark red and clear pour, a finger of head that rapidly dissipates into the beer leaving some good lacing on the glass.

S: slightly acetic tart, fruits and some oaky/woody notes.

T: tart fruits, not super tart, but a nice acetic tart. Very clean taste.

M: crisp and clean. Nice and bubbly too.

O: great mildly tart beer.

Deep brownish red colour with some haze from both the chill and yeast, tight off white lace with a half decent lace. Soft and slightly sour aroma, dry woody almost nutty back ground. Biting crispness within the light yet effervescent and smooth carbonation. Puckering twang of sourness hits the palate, fruity flavours ride along with this and give suggestions of ripe currant and apple peel. A woody dryness sneaks up and dries the mouth is a split second and clear all residual sweetness. Quite the enjoyable Flemish Red …

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Best before September 9th 2012, and ready to roll.

A nice somewhat foamy head that is sort of cream and off red/white in appearance. Sits on a dark brown/red body resembling almost pancake syrup like in color.

Bouquet is very unique. A faint brown sugar, smoked wood chips, sour fruit and yeast all combine to make a real interesting nose. Hints of brett"y" saison quality. Real nice.

Taste is a very tolerable sourness, and what feels like maltyness and brown sugar on the finish. Both sour and sweet at the same time. A little bit of tight prickly carbonation though, and a bit of a wet mouthfeel.

Even still drinkability is pretty solid. I would have this more often if it wasn't so pricey.

11.2 oz bottle with a best before date of 13/05/11. The ABV is 6% on this very attractive bottle. Poured into a chalice.

A: Pretty average in appearance. The 1 finger, light brown head lasts for a while, then subsides into a thick, constantly creamy film. The body is hazy, about 70% opaque, and has a reddish dark brown/ambery color. There is a paleness or lack of saturation in the color of this brew that makes it unique. Lacing is good.

S: Light malts of caramel and cereal. Light hops of flowers, grass and lime. The yeast character is heavy & dominates the aroma with a funky barnyard/cheesy quality mixed with an earthy leafiness.

T & M: Long flavor duration. Moderate sweetness on the tongue is countered by above average acidity and mild bitterness. Lots of red/dark fruits and spices. Upfront flavors of cherries, prunes, grapes, champagne vinegar, toffee and butterscotch. Contributing flavors of raspberry, butter, allspice, nutmeg and a flat cherry cola. Don't get me wrong, the carbonation was present and very fizzy, it was just somehow detached from the cherry cola sensation. The Duchesse has a creamy texture to her, she is tart/sour, and finishes with a real vinegary astringency.

D: More drinkable than say, a wild ale, and is much tamer in mouthfeel comparison. Nice distribution of aromas and flavors. Very stimulating and definitely palatable, might max out at two in a session.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a massive tan head. Excellent retention and great lace all over the glass. This is an impressive looking brew.

Smell is sweet and tart at the same time. Sweet candy and funky fruit.

Taste is boldy tart. Some hints of vinegar are underneath sour apples and sour melon.

Overall, this is a fine Flanders beer. Looks fantastic. Maybe not as seemless as a Rodenbach, but still very good.

Clear red, deep poppy-red, crisp lightly pink coloured head that receeds and leaves no lacing, but a fine pink ring on the liquid.

Smells fresh and nice! Tart berries and green grapes, slightly unripe strawberries, without the bitter stringiness to it. Lightly funky, there's a light maltiness behind it all as well.

Taste is lightly acidic, with a oh so small, but refreshing hint of vinegar and citric acid, but at the same time it is pretty sweet. Lots of red berries, a b it riper than in the nose, but not fully ripe, still contributing with a light bittterness. Finishes with a funky white breadiness and a faint bitterness.

Slightly cloying in the mouth, but still manages to stay pretty fresh thanks to the acidity.

Best by date of 30/03/2013. 11.2 oz bottle poured into a chimay goblet after being in the fridge for an hour.

A - Deep red/brown with an off white head.

S - Huge vinegar aroma. Sour cherries, oak, and some malts

A - Silky smooth mouth feel. Lots of sweet cherries and oak, with a great sour vinegar finish. I can taste some malts and yeast in there as well.

O - One of the best Flemish ales I've had. This is a very good example of the style and it drinks really well on a hot summer day.

A: Deep brown color with some reddish tinges. Thin cream colored head.

S: A bit wine-like with some red delicious apple, apple cider vinegar, horse blanket funk, vanilla and toffee.

T: Pretty delicious. Sweet and tart with big rich fruity notes and a pretty good dose of funk on the finish. Lots of red apples and caramel with some plum and vanilla. Very very drinkable.

Appearance- Pours up a good amount of head which appears to have even better retention. The head is a light tan/almost beige while the body is a mix of dull chestnut brown and dull maroon which appears as a mix of crimson and maroon in the light. Considerable lacing has been left behind.

Nose- Starts off with a bunch of acetic acid from the bottle which quickly turns to a light vinous smell. The aroma from the glass, however, is in no way light- this is full on red wine. It's been a while since I drank wine but it seems in the vein of a Zinfandel or Syrah. Cherries and plums- softer red fruit. Not as tart as I would have expected from a Flanders Red. Swirling reveals a sharper red wine profile that almost suggests tannins. If I were blindfolded, I would assume from the nose that this was red wine and not beer.

Taste- Starts with a slight continuance of the vinous nose but then turns decidedly sweeter with a low key cherry (somewhat cherry pie) note. Definitely not as tart as I would have guessed initially but after seeing the pH readings, it makes sense. Some wheat, some grain- something that most tart beers' flavor profiles never give a chance to show. Vinous nature (all red wine) starts to appear and in wine parlance seems a little flabby. More delicate than loud- this is a much more accessible Flanders Red. It won't wow anyone into sours but it's sitting just fine by me. Definitely a wine drinker's kind of beer. Some hint of peaches or other stone fruits. Slight sherry notes. Good to really good beer, pretty much in the middle. Not as clean and crisp as many Flemish Reds but also not as tart. It's a trade-off I'm okay but places this beer a level lower than some of those great beers. Touch of cinnamon.

Mouthfeel- Almost medium bodied with lots of syrup to the texture. Good amount of carbonation that has some zip. The zing gives this somewhat flabby beer a little more character.

Drinkability- Surprisingly easygoing. This is easily the most drinkable Flanders Red I've ever had. And at 5 to 6 bucks, it's also very reasonable. Could be very nice as a dessert beer.

Overall- Good to really good. Doesn't hit you over the head like most of the beers in its style but is still quite enjoyable. A must try as it adds breadth to the style. I would buy again.
