Poured into my Dogfish Goblet.

Appearance: Dark red/burgundy with a quickly dissipating white head. Little lacing on the glass.

Smell: Smells like a great sour: balsamic and vinegar up front. Also tart red fruit and musty grape.

Taste: A really great, well balanced sour: oak, vinegar, tart red fruit, balsamic, and wine-like grape. A nice sour, mouth-puckering taste overall. Very well balanced, with a lot going on.

Mouthfeel: very crisp, dry, sour, and refreshing. Medium body and medium carbonation. Long finish.

Overall: A really great Belgian style sour ale. Nice balance of sour, tart, and fruity. Would definitely buy again.

Duchesse De Bourgogne pours a very dark reddish color with very little head. There is a wine like aroma, with sour fruit notes. The taste is much the same sour grape flavors, sweeter, similar to a wine. Full flavors and nice body, still a nice beer to sip. Overall a very nice sour ale.

Now, this is a real different one!

Poured from a longneck bottle into a chalice. Dark, deep mahogany colored, with medium head formation. The aroma can be smelled right away (no need to sniff the glass). A complex blend of acidic notes that brings out shoyu, balsamic vinegar and grapes. The taste is incredibly different, and at first I did not like it. It is the kind of beer that grows with each sip. After you get used to it, the flavor gets really interesting and very complex. It is kind of in between a beer and a red wine, with that vinegar thing always in the background. Amazing, classy drink!

bottle into snifter

appearance: dark brown/copper, bubbly 1 finger slightly off white head

smell: smells more like champagne/wine then beer, lots of grape, pear

taste: Very tart and sour, getting a lot of grape and pear, follows the nose and has a lot of champagne-like flavors. The finish is dry and sweet, very sweet, with some apple and other spices coming through towards the end. As it warms the fruitiness and tartness come through even more, the lingering sourness is very smooth and refreshing, not overwhelming by any means.

mouthfeel: high carbonation, medium bodied

overall: Haven't had too many sours, to me this tastes more like champagne than a beer, but I really enjoyed this. I mean really enjoyed this, even thought it's insanely expensive I will be purchasing this many times again, and curious to try other flemish sours. I've yet to have a less than mediocre beer from Belgium, any style, they know what they're doing.

This was my first flanders red, and my first craft brew -- it left me in awe that something could taste like this. I was infatuated with the funk and the sour. I still cannot get enough of the Duchesse.

Pours a dark ruby/garnet with a thick head.
Smells like gym sock and farmhouse funk deliciousness with hints of tart cherries.
Initial taste is funky with a sour aftertaste. Tastes like cherries, and has a dry acidic finish to it. Very refreshing brew.

This is a full bodied slightly complex beer that is easily drinkable. The statements are correct that this indeed is a nice Flanders Red Intro.
