Silver Medal Winner 1997 World Beer Championships - Oatmeal Stouts.
Our classic dark beer. Full body and a well rounded flavor comes from a foundation of seven different grains. The oats add a special silky texture that complements the roasted malts. The rich malty flavor is spiced with plenty of Northern Brewer and Fuggles hops for balance. Enjoy this perennial Free State Favorite by itself or as a blend with one of our other beers.

Very satisfying stout with no exotic things happening here. I tend to like stouts with more this that or the other thing, but, really, I could drink this all day and not be upset. Drier than some - in a good way.

The oatmeal makes the coffee tones very mild, almost too mild. Nothing out of the ordinary for this stout, but a nice solid attempt, and a nice dry aftertaste.

Bottle received in trade from Bigtreebrewing, thanks for the opportunity.
Solid dark brown color with faint ruby at the edges and a smallish khaki head the slowly dissipates. Chocolate and caramel maltiness with a hint of roast. Creamy silky mouthfeel. Nice beer, could maybe use a hint more roastiness though.

Purchased in Newton, KS. Brought back to Oklahoma. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter glass.

Black liquid with a short tan head. Incredible aroma, lots of toasty charred notes.

Flavor is very toasty and dry. Dark chocolate. Very earthy. Delicious bitter with a little bit of sweetness in the background.

Dryer than most oatmeal stouts but I like it.

Nice texture, smooth yet a little bit "chewy." Fairly thick mouthfeel for the style.

This one is worth seeking out. Exceptionally good.

The second in an installment of beers I got in exchange for some jalapeno poppers at a party at my neighbors house. Side poured with standard vigor from the bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Standard oatmeal stout appearance, which means amazing. Pours a dark black color with a thin caramel head that dissipates relatively quickly, but leaves just a trace of lacing on the glass. Pretty standard Free State packaging, as soon as you see this beer you know it is from Free State.

Smell - A bit of coffee, some chocolate, touch of molasses and some creaminess. Pretty subdued nose.

Taste - Much more pronounced than the nose, although the same flavors are present. The creaminess is amazing, with chocolate, roasted malts, and coffee flavors balanced by just a bit of bitter hops.

Mouthfeel - This is probably my favorite part of the beer, given its thick creamy nature, smooth finish, and easy drinkability. Very nicely done, feels a lot more expensive on the palate.

Overall - This is a pretty good beer! Condor recommended and approved. For the price it is hard to beat, especially from such a small brewery. Give this a try, you wont be disappointed.

Sampling right now on 6/28/14. Bought this one while down in Kansas at the beginning of the month, just a single for $1.49. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a "Free State Beer" pilsner glass.

Pours black in color and you can't see through it. A small beige head is seen that settles down to a thin layer on top and sides. Ringed lacing is seen when sipped that slides back down the inside of the glass. The aroma is of roasted malts with a hint of molasses. The taste has lots of roasted malt flavor with some spice and coffee. A very slight bitter finish that doesn't last long. Perfect carbonation for this type of brew. Overall a very tasty stout!

Light black in color and just a touch of light will get through. A solid half inch of light beige colored foam rests on top. Brussels lacing. I smell judiciously used oats and dark malt. The first sip reveals a quick rush of oats that is quickly overpowered by dark roasted malt which leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. The mouth is creamy and slightly chalky. Straightforward and simple.

A - Dark black, only a glimmer of light comes through. Very little head but lacing holds up well

S - pretty weak, molasses and spices from the hops

T - Chocolate, coffee, toffe

M - a bit watery for a stout

O - a bit dissapointing, not as strong flavor and mouthfeel as I'd like from an outmeat stout.. Would drink another, but not something I'll seek out.

12oz. Bottle poured into a pint glass. An extra courtesy of GHB.

Appearance: Dark brown with a nice tan head of about 1" that sticks around with some nice lacing.

Smell: Mild coffee and chocolate on the nose.

Taste: Coffee up front with some bitter chocolate on the finish, maybe a hint of toffee but overall a pleasant bitterness dominates from the combination of the roasted malt and hops.

Mouthfeel: Relatively thin on the palate, maybe just a little too thin for an oatmeal stout.

Overall: There are really some nice flavors here; however, the lightness of the body keeps this beer from being as good as it could be.

Appearance: pours a deep molasses color. Hardly any head and no lacing. A thin ring of bubbles around the edge. smell: Sweet caramel and toffee aroma, like a milk stout. Taste: Bitter-sweet chocolate, mild expresso, lightly toasted bread. Mouthfeel: medium to light bodied for a stout. Again, very similar to a milk stout or a porter. Overall; Very enjoyable and well worth a try especially if you're a porter lover.

Bottle poured into pint glass

Deep dark chocolate brown with creamy two finger cap that eased down into gentle edged lacings on the side of the glass. Nearly impervious to light with faint ruby shades at the bottom of the glass

subtle coffee fragrance with a hint of molasses

Smooth with a nice finish . Stout taste with subtle coffee after notes . Nice balance with the hops

Good weight on my tongue . Low to no carbonation

A good, pleasant stout and would prefer to try it on tap

a deep brown almost black pour, 1/2 of tan head. excellent retention/lacing.
smells of wood, vanilla, coffee, tobacco.
slight bitterness up front from the roasted grains with a milky sweet chocolatey finish. a delicious treat.. perfect balance of roasted and sweet flavors.
medium body with a creamy feel, nicely carbonated and leaves a chalky feeling behind.

overall, a damn fine stout! looks, feels, smells and tastes great, what more could you want? granted, it's not a special one off or anything like that, but as far as brewery staple beers go - this is fantastic.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: Pours a dark brown that does not allow much light to get through, 1 finger of tan head with a good amount of lacing.

S: Coffee, chocolate and roasted malt on the nose.

T: Similar to the nose, coffee, chocolate, slight bitterness, and finishes with roasted malt.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation with a dry finish.

O: As someone that is not well versed with stouts I found this to be very drinkable.

A: A very dark brown, almost black pour. Big, dense light brown head. Head retention is wonderful and barely ever fades. Tons of lacing spiderwebs across the glass.

S: Roasted malt, oatmeal, a bit creamy. Maybe a touch of coffee.

T: Lots of oatmeal. Very creamy and smooth. Roasted malt comes through with a bit of coffee and char bitterness in the aftertaste.

M: Fairly thin but very smooth and silky.

O: Not a bad oatmeal stout. A bit too heavy on the oatmeal and light on the roasted malt detracts but not horribly so.

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Dark brown with a fingers worth of tan head
that disappeared pretty quickly. Fair amount of lacing.

Smell- Roasted malt with a slightly sweet aroma.

Taste- Roasted malt with a mellow bitterness.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied and silky. Decent amount of carbonation.

Overall- Decent enough but not my favorite stout.

Another beer picked up in Hays, KS. 12oz brown bottle. THe notch for freshness appears to be April 2012 though it's extremely faint and I am not sure this isn't just a scrape. In any event, to the pint glass! The beer pours a dark blackish color with deep brown edges in the light. Small 1 finger tannish/light brown head. Some retention and lacing but not much. The aroma is roasty sweetness with a hint of hop character and a noticeably biscuity malt tone. The beer tastes rich with roasted barley, mild bitterness, a subdued malty sweetness. Feels silky. Lighter end of medium bodied. Overall, not a bad oatmeal stout though not mind blowing, pretty solid though. I could easily put this 6 pack down in an evening ;)

Appearance: Opaque body with tan carbonation bubbles leading to the head. The lace was full and pretty tight.

Smell: Smells of deep roasted malt with a hint of bitter cocoa.

Taste: Roasted malt toffee flavor. It is not as spicy as explained in the synopsis above but there is a bit of hops flavor.

Mouthfeel: Slick and on the lower end of full.

Overall: It was alright with a hamburger at the Flying Saucer in KC.

Appearnce - Poured a solid black opaque with a light tan head that kept its retention pretty well.

Smell - Hints of mint and chocolate, with a very slight boozy scent.

Taste - Similar to the smell, but slightly subdued. Finished pleasantly with with a hoppy to burnt bitterness note.

Mouthfeel - The beer had a great level of low to medium carbonation. Beer had a decent viscosity to it, could have just been a tad thicker.

Overall - This is a very enjoyable beer. I do think if the flavors were kicked up a notch, this beer could be a "knock it out of the park" type beer.

12 oz bottle with best by notches of Feb, second month...2012 I hope! Pours a pretty deep shade of black with a small cap of light brown head. Retention and lacing are both average.

Nose is sweet and roasty, just like a good oatmeal stout should. Clean and low on the hops with a nice cereal grain kick to it.

Taste is a little less sweet than it smells with a rich, roasty-caramel malt profile. Oats dont go as thick and creamy as some of the style, but it is barely full enough and is indeed pretty silky. Touch of fruitiness in there from the yeast and overall is pretty fun to drink. Id say this is a darn good oaty stout, but not in the top tier for the style. If it were available here, Id probably buy 2 or 3 sixers a year…especially considering the lack of representatives in the category sold in TX.

Nice tan/off-white head that dissipated quickly. Very dark brown almost black in the glass. Slight lacing in the glass.

Very pleasant nose with fresh brewed coffee and molasses. Tastes of chocolate with a slight bitterness and a slightly sweet chocolate finish.

A slight acidity on the tongue is complemented by good carbonation through the entire beer.

Appearance: Pours out dark brown with ruby highlights. About 1/4" of tan head forms that has below average retention and lacing. 3

Smell: Some dark malts show up, with chocolate and coffee as well. Some graininess and herbal notes show as well.

Taste: Dark malts, light roast, chocolate and coffee, some herbal hop notes hit on the back end. Not the most flavorful oatmeal stout out there, but decent.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with pretty low carbonation, reasonably smooth and a bit slick. Overall, not my favorite oatmeal stout by any stretch, but solid enough.

Pours a very dark brown color. Produced a 1 finger beige head, which dissipated quickly.

The smell was of malt, chocolate, oatmeal cookies.

The taste was of malts, oatmeal, and light chocolate. A slight bitterness finishes the drink.

Nice, easy drinking.

Poured into a shaker pint glass. Pours a rich black with a hint of brown when held to the light. A dark creamy pillowy head sits on top, and doesn't dissipate very much, until the end. Lots of nice sticky lacing. Smells of roasted malts and some bitter chocolates. The beer tastes like a good hearty oatmeal stout should: lots of bitter chocolate, a whim of oats, and a slightly dry finish. The mouthfeel is spot-on for a stout. Overall, I'm proud of this beer from my home state. Free State does a great job representing the Oatmeal Stout.

Pours a dark brown color. 2/3 inch head of an off-tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of oatmeal, slight dry hop, sweet malt, pale malt, hint of roasted malt, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of an Oatmeal Stout. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of oatmeal, slight sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, hops, and slight pale malt. Overall, good appearance, aroma, and feel.

Very dark coffee colored oatmeal stout that is a solid beer. A bit disappointed by the lack of a good thick head on top of the beer. Lacing is there though, from top to bottom. Tast is a little tart, and a little salty; not much smell apart from a hint of coffee with the maltiness. Some acidity; it just lacks a little bit of body and complexity for me, but not too bad overall. Quite drinkable, just not very memorable.
