Notes/Commercial Description:
Silver Medal Winner 1997 World Beer Championships - Oatmeal Stouts.
Our classic dark beer. Full body and a well rounded flavor comes from a foundation of seven different grains. The oats add a special silky texture that complements the roasted malts. The rich malty flavor is spiced with plenty of Northern Brewer and Fuggles hops for balance. Enjoy this perennial Free State Favorite by itself or as a blend with one of our other beers.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: Pours a dark brown that does not allow much light to get through, 1 finger of tan head with a good amount of lacing.

S: Coffee, chocolate and roasted malt on the nose.

T: Similar to the nose, coffee, chocolate, slight bitterness, and finishes with roasted malt.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation with a dry finish.

O: As someone that is not well versed with stouts I found this to be very drinkable.

Dark brown almost black color, decent lasting tan head. Sweet chocolate malty roasted burnt aroma, chocolate roasty sugary burnt bitter coffee flavors, yet has a pretty smooth and creamy mouthfeel, medium body has a nice burnt bitterness in the finish.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. This is from a selection of Free State Brewing beers send to me by JeepCop. Thanks Dale!

Pours a deep brown/near black in the glass, with a finger of smooth and creamy mocha colored head. This stays rich, leaving back a foamy cascade that settles that quickly slides down the sides but still leaves some light spotty lacing behind. The aroma is surprisingly hoppy upon first whiff, with floral notes, spice, and some bright-smelling green fruit. Coffee flavors and chocolate quickly swoop in behind the hops. I'm really digging the melding of the citrus, cocoa, and roast here. This is nice.

Those hops are equally forceful in the taste, with a fresh citric bite that sits up against a wall of crunchy roast, caramel, and chocolate. The sweetness does offer up some balance here but this is mostly coming off to me as roasty and bitter and that's what hangs in the finish the most. The mouthfeel bodied, with a relatively perky sharpness to the carbonation that makes those hops and roasted notes pop that much more but the oats keep this overall pretty smooth and silky in the mouth.

This is a very solid Oatmeal Stout and I'm really glad that I got to this one fresh, as that mildly aggressive hop profile really helped make this one for me. This stayed quite smooth and drinkable though as well. I enjoyed this.

Fine dense black shade. The nose has plenty of coffee with a sweet liquor/scotch ale accent. Light in the front with some fruit and a nice roast at the back with some bitterness (grapefruit?) at the finish. Lighter mouth feel leaves a smoother stout drinking experience.

A - Poured an opaque, deep black hue with a nearly two-finger, tan, rocky head of foam. It left great sticky, patchy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of oats, roasted malt and coffee. There were subtle chocolate notes.

T - It was a great blend of bitter and sweet. Bitter hops and coffee blended with sweet, roasty caramel and chocolate.

M - It was soft and smooth with a somewhat dry finish. A medium-bodied stout.

D - This is a very good oatmeal stout. It has a great blend of sweet and bitter.

Another beer picked up in Hays, KS. 12oz brown bottle. THe notch for freshness appears to be April 2012 though it's extremely faint and I am not sure this isn't just a scrape. In any event, to the pint glass! The beer pours a dark blackish color with deep brown edges in the light. Small 1 finger tannish/light brown head. Some retention and lacing but not much. The aroma is roasty sweetness with a hint of hop character and a noticeably biscuity malt tone. The beer tastes rich with roasted barley, mild bitterness, a subdued malty sweetness. Feels silky. Lighter end of medium bodied. Overall, not a bad oatmeal stout though not mind blowing, pretty solid though. I could easily put this 6 pack down in an evening ;)

Draught @ Free State: This one pours a very dark, fairly opaque brown with a tan head. It did leave some lacing down the glass. The aroma was somewhat milder. There are hints of roasted malt and chocolate to the nose. The taste is very smooth, with some roastiness and chocolate. A nice stout.

(12oz bottle). Pours dark brown with khaki head. Aroma of cocoa, dark fruit and caramel. Also, a little roasty coffee notes. Taste is sweet with a little roasted bitterness. Thin to medium bodied with a creamy texture and slightly bitter finish. This is a nice stout and one that I would gladly have again.

Free State is a local beerpub based out of Lawrence, KS. For the longest time their beers have only been available either at the brewpub or via growler. Recently, however, they've begun bottling their beer (finally) and making it available for purchase, albeit on a very limited basis.

Stouts for summer. Why not? While lots of folks are reaching for a pilsner or pale ale, I figured I'd go the opposite direction, drinking some stouts, which I usually prefer to have in the dead of winter.

12 ounce bottle. Pouring the beer it looks reminiscent of cola, with a nicely building sudsy tan head. You have to pour this beer somewhat aggressively to get any kind of head out of it. You can really smell the oatmeal in the nose, with some chocolate and burnt molasses. The flavor to this beer is an explosion. The first taste is amazing, with lots of bittersweet chocolate, roasted oatmeal, and caramel sweetness coming through. There's some hints of coffee here, though they are muted. The hops profile also adds a light fruitiness to the whole affair. Light mouthfeel, not creamy or thick, but drinkable in it's own way. Honestly, for my money it's right up there with Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout as one of the best examples of the style you can find.

This beer pours a thick dark brown color with a little off white head that leaves some lacing as you drink. The aroma is strong with coffee notes. The taste starts with some malty sweetness and then moves to coffee with a slight caramel finish. The mouthfeel is overcarbed and burns slightly. Overall a decent oatmeal stout.

Pours black and completely opaque. A one inch tan head forms and lingers with good retention and leaves some nice lacing.

The aroma is fairly mild, but there are some fruity esters as well as some chocolate tones.

The taste is quite nice. A little fruity, then it gives way to some chocolate, caramel, and a bit of coffee. This one is also slightly bitter.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and nicely carbonated.

Drinkability is fairly high. Tatse is good and alcohol is presumeably low making for a nice session.

Bottle courtesy of russpowell. Thanks Russ!

Best by the second week in June.

It pours a very dark brown, perhaps black, with a 1 finger head of tannish foam.

It smells roasty, hints of dark chocolate and on the bitter side.

Mmm. The taste surprised me. Very richly flavoured with tasty roasted malt, a touch of some sweetness, hints of coffee and a taste of dark chocolate, overall a very enjoyable bitter sweet thing going on. Now that I’ve had a few sips, I can see this does well with the lacing.

Medium body, the same with the carbonation, I like the smooth mouth feel and I find this Oatmeal Stout very easy to drink. A very nice brew!

A good oatmeal stout, but not great.

Head is lacking, but could be due to the glasses they use.

Color is typical stout with roasted malted aroma, but not strong.

Sweet undertones in the taste, but the oatmeal roast category overcomes it. It could use some more stout properties, i.e. roasted malt.

12oz. Bottle poured into a pint glass. An extra courtesy of GHB.

Appearance: Dark brown with a nice tan head of about 1" that sticks around with some nice lacing.

Smell: Mild coffee and chocolate on the nose.

Taste: Coffee up front with some bitter chocolate on the finish, maybe a hint of toffee but overall a pleasant bitterness dominates from the combination of the roasted malt and hops.

Mouthfeel: Relatively thin on the palate, maybe just a little too thin for an oatmeal stout.

Overall: There are really some nice flavors here; however, the lightness of the body keeps this beer from being as good as it could be.

Best by 3rd week of December, 2010.

Pours near black, with brown around the edges. Nice puffy tan head adorns, dissipates to a nice little film that laces significantly.

Aroma is decent, but faint. Roasted malts, maybe even a little nutty.

Definitely can taste the oats. Theres a smidge of hop bitterness, but majority is nice roasted malts. There is a slight coffee taste that comes through on the finish.

Feel is medium to full bodied, with minimal carbonation. There is some creaminess, lending it very smooth.

This is definitely a sold, above average Oatmeal Stout, with a well above average drinkability to go with it.
