Notes/Commercial Description:
Silver Medal Winner 1997 World Beer Championships - India Pale Ales.
This flavorful beer is made in the style of the India Pale Ale Style originally manufactured in Great Britain for their colonies in India, but with an American twist. The harsh travel that the beer had to survive required a strong, hoppy beer. The Hops and the high level of alcohol helped buffer the beer through its long travels. Made with flavorful and full bodied Pale Ale malt combined with a touch of caravienne for color and carapils for body, the rich flavor of this beer is matched and enhanced by a very generous portion of Centennial and Cascade hops. The Cascades give this beer its distinctive floral aroma and a uniquely American character.

A – Orange/copper color, which is funny because it’s also in the name. But honestly this beer has a nice hue to it, it absorbs light and nice a nice glow to it. Nice off white head forms and leaves some mild lacing on the glass.

S – Good sweet caramel smell, and a decent citrus hop character as well, but also a little floral also at the end.

T – Good balanced pale ale, with the sweetness of the malt and the punch of the hops it’s a nice example of the traditional style. The hops have a citrus character, the floral hops in the nose don’t come out in the taste.

M – Carbonation was good, and the mouth feel was balanced.

O – I had this over a year back and this is my 2nd visit and this time I enjoyed it more than the first. Well made and well balanced pale ale. Free State makes some just all around good brews. This is my 2nd style experience with them, and both have been great.

Based on taste and appearance, I would've thought that Copperhead Pale Ale from Free State would be an English Pale Ale, so I was of course very surprised to come on BA and find this listed as an AIPA (neck label on bottle calls it an "American Pale Ale"). This was a nice copper color with a bit of foam consisting of tiny bubbles. The beer had a bit of woody hop aroma and sweet malt that were both repeated in the taste. Furthermore, the hop flavor wasn't that sprucy, grapefruit, fruity west coast hops, but more of a minty, herbal, earthy English hop thing. Overall, this was a tasty beer, but definitely not up-to-snuff for an American IPA.

Appearance - Bright copper color, I see it in the name. This head that leaves quickly with some decent lacing.

Smell - good blend of sweet malts with some bitter hops on the end

Taste - nice bitter start to the beer with a well balanced malt build to balance this one out.

Mouthfeel - Smooth bitter finish.

Overall - solid pale ale!

A: pours with a nice copper color and has a small one finger head

S: slightly citric with a malt note. Grapefruit almost

T: the taste is wonderful. Very hoppy but not too overpowering. Wonderful grapefruit taste and very smooth. Slight malty notes throughout, just enough to keep you satisfied.

At first glance, and review I thought this was just a pale ale. I'm not a big drinker of IPA's as they are just too bitter for me. I prefer not to not have my mouth abused by my beer. That being said, this is a perfect example of what I'm looking for in an IPA. I am astounded at the quality of this beer. It all goes so well together and doesn't overpower you in any one area. Goes great with spicy dishes, like gumbo or Mexican cuisine. I will buy this beer again. GREAT BEER FREESTATE!!!!

BBD of the 4th week of June

Pours amber/copper with 2 fingers of tan head. Good lacing & average head retention

S: Pineyness, floral notes, lemons & herbal hop, plus a touch of malt sweetness once warm, plus just a bit of sulphur

T: Herbal & piney hops, slight biscuitty malt up front, plus herbal hop bitterness, a touch of mineral/dryness. Pears apricot, mix with herbal & woody hops, plus dryness when warmed up. Finishes dry, crisp, with a touch of minerals, sulphur, pine & a touch of honey

MF: Medium bodied, crisp carbonation, great balance

I liked this better on draft, but will happily buy this again when I find myself in Kansas, which is at least a few times a year

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. This is from a selection of Free State Brewing beers send to me by JeepCop. Thanks Dale!

Pours a crystal clear copper, with a finger of bright-white head. This retains with more of a thin and fizzier looking layer that hangs tough and soaps the sides of the glass with rich spotty foam. The aroma is grassy, spicy, and bitter, with some green citric hop character. This is backed by some stiff smelling grainy malt but the hops really push the nose here with a fresh and moderately vibrant feel.

The taste is similar, with an assertive citric bite that spreads pithy bitterness and green fruit out into the mouth. This is well balanced by sweet toasted grains of the pale malts and a splash of caramel but the hops definitely control this, with bitter fruit stretching into the finish along with some light drying spice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a crisp creamy bubbly feel that fills up the mouth with some presence but then remains slick on the backend and helps this staying relatively easy.

Nothing wrong with this at all. Just a flavorful and crisp IPA (although this one really kind of towed the line between that and an assertive APA) that kept the focus on the hops while still keeping this balanced and drinkable. Really nice stuff. I'd like to try this one on draft as well.

Hazy, coppery-tawny-gold in hue; the liquid was pleasant in appearance. It was served with almost two fingers of frothy off-white head. Head retention was excellent, a half finger cap lasted the entire consumption. There was a tremendous amount of subsequent, sticky lacing. On cask this Pale Ale looks great. It is eye candy for the beer fiend.

The nose is powerful with a hoppy blast that only cask beer can offer. It is citrusy-grapefruit and piney with a fruity underbelly. The malt backbone is solid; it supplies a toasty but soft caramel biscuit aroma. Solid potency. I found the bouquet to be very inviting.

The palate is the same wonderful combination as the nose. This Pale Ale is put together perfectly… it is a cask queen. The hops are assertive; they just jumped down my throat. They were bitter and flavorful with grapefruit rinds, orange zest, and pine needles/spruce bark. Yeast fruitiness. The belly is malty; caramel and toasty biscuits. The aftertaste is long and relaxing. This beer was so damn tasty on cask.

Medium in body, the cask-conditioning created a low but natural carbonation level and it produced a pliable and relaxing mouthfeel.

Drinkable? Yell yeah. I order two of these and I’m not sure I set my glass down. It was quaffed at the brewpub in Lawrence, KS. I wish this were on cask every time I went... this is a “must try” if you see this beer on cask. Yum.

In comparison to the Ad Astra, this beer was certainly more bitter but had alot more flavors alongside it, I couldn't put my finger on it but it seemed to have a light citrusy flavor, maybe oranges. Definitely a stronger, more bitter taste than the Ad Astra. Was delicious no less, a great one to alternate with the Ad Astra.

Bottle: Poured a copper color ale with a medium size head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of light citrus notes with dry caramel malt notes. Taste is also dominated by dry caramel notes with some light citrus undertones. Body is about average with good carbonation. Easily quaffable thought hops profile is bit more subdued then I had expected.
