You'd better believe it. We use seven different malts to create an incredible sensation of aroma and flavor. The special roasted barleys we use give this brew its smokey espresso scent. And the first sip reveals a rich sweet character which ends in a coffee/cocoa finish. Our special, natural carbonation process creates the dense head, tiny bubbles, and creamy character of this dark beauty. Perfect to sit with and contemplate. After a large pie, don't say Decaf Espresso, say Damn Good Stout.

On tap at the Bru Room, served in a pint glass:

Appeared a nice, dark, coffee color with a dark, thick, chocolate head that was well retained. The beer had a lighter aroma than expected, a little coffee and a slight hint of chocolate. The taste followed the nose, but was a bit stronger. The beer had a lighter feel, but it was smooth, creamy and easy to drink. Overall, a solid beer. (385 characters)

Why did I wait so long to review this? Damn good doesn't even come close. This stuff is great. Deep dark brown color with a dark brown frothy head that hangs on for about half the glass. Big aroma of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is full and chewy, and the flavor is better and better with every sip. Malty and chocolatey, with dark strong coffee in the aftertaste. Sweet cocoa lingers, making me want to have more and more. Very satisying and very tasty and very drinkable. (491 characters)

Thinner than expected body, but solid taste of roasted malt throughout. Certainly better than anything SBC brews, but don't expect awesome beer, either. This and the espresso stout are the best ones they offer. (210 characters)

16oz pour from the bar, nobody wanted a pitcher of this...shame because I would drink one on my own.

A - black beer with a seemingly thickish body, khaki foam on top about a third of an inch or so, left behind some spotty lacing sip after sip.

S - mmmm. perfect medly of roasted (and slightly charred) malts, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, slight subtle nuttyness. sweet and bitter (roast) work very well together. quite inviting.

T - great again. beautiful balance. takes all the classic stout flavors and delivers each one with precision and balance. many waves of roast, bitter (coffee, hops), sweet (chocolate, vanilla). quite enjoyable, so glad i went out of my way to try this.

M - wow. cant imagine it getting any better than this for the style. thick creamy body, coats the mouth with its wonderful flavors, and goes down super smooth. carbonation is present but well done, works well with the roast and sweetness. should be a measuring stick for all others of the style.

D - wonderful stout. robust and flavorful yet goes down easily thanks for a rich and creamy yet not overwhelming mouthfeel. delicious. perfectly named, damn good indeed. (1,152 characters)

On tap at the Bru Room. Black, with mocha creamy head, measuring 1/4 inch. Srved appropriate waarmer. Roast and chocolate aroma. Coffee is the story, and the coffee acid build as i finish gulp after gulp. Fuller mouthfeel. Very nitro like. Good for what is is, as I am not a coffee drinker or big fan. (301 characters)

This has a yummy look to it, deep brown, nice brown head, full and fluffy. Coffee dominates the nose, serious coffee, french roast style, just a hint of sweetness. Then ah, the taste.. It lives up to the smell. While the nose was all coffee, the taste is a nice balance of the bitter coffee and the sweet chocolate malts. Extremely well balanced. Yum. The mouthfeel...wait, i'm still on yum...OK. could use a smidge more carbonation, belying the head. The coffee sits in the back of the mouth, not unpleasantly, but I wished it would clear sooner. A little too heavy to drink all night, it is not too heavy for the style.

A delicious beer worth going back for all by itself. (678 characters)

L: Pours a black color with a tall and thick brown colored head that fades slowly to a ring around the beer.
S: The smell is of a mixture of sweet roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and coffee all prevalent in the nose.
T: The taste follows the nose very well. Tastes of sweet deep roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and caramel all mixed perfectly. It has a very sweet aftertaste that all of the beers at bar have that I really enjoy.
M: Very smooth, rich, heavy, and warming. Has the right amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable stout. This is one of my favorite beers and is one of the reasons stouts are my favorite beer. Definately worth a try. (651 characters)

This was my dessert beer of the nite. The brew comes in a pint glass. A very creamy tan head is present on the surface and never fades. The beer is pitch black with no light getting through.
Aroma is rich and malty with roasty scents and hints of light coffee and a chocolate bar coming through..
The beer is very rich, smooth and creamy. Actually similar to a Guinness in texture. Flavor is all coffee and chocolate, swiss mocha anyone?
Super tight latticework on the glass as I drink. No hop presence in the taste.
The finish is coffee bitter.
This is a very robust brew. have it alone or as dessert. Would pair very nicely with vanilla ice cream. (655 characters)

Drank on on-tap at Bru Rm. at BAR, New Haven, CT

Poured an opaque, brown/black with a creamy, silky smooth, cocoa-colored head that appeared to be from a nitro tap. Drippy splotches of lacing coated the glass.

The aroma was chocolately and sweet. Notes of powdered cocoa and milk chocolate came through strong from the start, along with some caramel sweetness and a touch of powdery yeastiness.

The taste was a complex and well-balanced mix of sweet and bitter flavors. Sweet dark chocolate was quite noticeable up front with deep, roasted malts and coffee coming through mid-palate. The finish was espresso-like and moderately hoppy, yet not in the least bit bitter. Residual notes of dark chocolate sweetness lingered in the aftertaste.

The mouthfeel was especially creamy and smooth initially (very nitro tap-like), but this subsided by mid-glass. (This beer had a texture that was strikingly similar to Guinness Draught.) The body was medium to medium-full with a very fine and mild carbonation (apparently this is the result of their "special natural-character process"). I wish it did have a bit more carbonation though, especially toward the drink's end.

All in all, this was a rather sweet stout, and an outstanding one at that. It could pair nicely with a chocolate dessert, but I would recommend savoring this gem on its own. (1,340 characters)

This stuff is jet black with a decent tan head and good lacing. It has a fairly unique nutty chocolate aroma that includes a very sour overtone. The flavor comes on with a deep sour cherry and coffee, smooth and a bit satiny. It's very drinkable for a stout. There's a charcoal finish. Very nice and highly recommended to any stout fans. (337 characters)

Pours a syrupy, near opaque oil in color beneath a creamy, light brown head. RInged lacing down the entire pint glass. Semi-sweet, roasted malt aromas: milk chocolate, molasses, deep caramel. Notes of fresh espresso and hazlenut. Creamy milk chocolate and toffee flavors upfront amidst a syrupy, yet roasted malt character. Notes of vanilla prior to a fresh, floral hop presence. Full bodied; syrupy and chewy all around the palate. An impressive, full-flavored and well-balanced stout. (486 characters)

Wow. This stout was the highlight of my visit to NERAX. Despite a slightly oily appearance, this brew is incredibly interesting. It boasts of being brewed from a blend of eight different malts. Each malt contributed some interesting character to the beer. The smooth drinking, medium bodied stout has notes reminiscent of coffee, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, oak, and honey. It has a lingering finish and would be a great beer to sit and savor again and again. I may have to road trip to New Haven. (501 characters)

This beer is an exceptional stout, it has a great taste. It is dark in color and rich in taste, much better than Guiness Extra Stout. It goes down easy making the drinker want more of it.

Too bad they don't bottle it!!!!

If you're ever in the New Haven area it is a must have at Bar, goes great with the mashed potato pizza. (331 characters)

This beer was the one saving moment of an otherwise disapointing visit to the Bru Rm. This beer isn't something that I would be going far out of my way to get. But as a stout being poured by a brew pub (posing as a dance club), I was completely happy with this. The beers here, in general, use to be better but I think that the beer is starting to take a back seat to catering to their late night crowd. This is the one to have, if you only have time for one at the Bru Rm. (473 characters)
