On tap at BAR, poured in a pint glass.
When it was brought out to me, this beer looked pleasant, but certainly unassuming. It's very dark, with a thin, coffee-colored head, but its appearance wasn't anything out of the ordinary.
It fared better in the smell. While not overly aromatic, the aroma is quite nice. The chocolate hits right away--there's no doubt that this is a chocolate beer, and the bulk of the smell is rich, dark cocoa. It's backed up by dark coffee and mild licorice notes, on top of a backbone of dark roasted malts. The aftertaste is predominately dark cocoa, with a touch of pleasing licorice. Incredibly nice, overall.
The taste is where this beer really excels. The chocolate, as promised in the smell, hits hard, making itself known right away. It's rich and decadent, without being overly sweet or syrupy. The pronounced chocolate flavor is backed up by a roastiness that is equal parts coffee and dark malt, with a subtle licorice taste in the background. While not overly complex, the flavors compliment each other perfectly, creating an extremely enjoyable combination of tastes.
The carbonation is modest, allowing the dense, rich character of the beer to come through. It's wonderfully velvety smooth, complimenting the rich character of its dessert-like flavors.
Overall, this is a delicious, incredibly drinkable beer. It's easy to sip, and I would gladly go back for several of these. It's absolutely delicious, and it doesn't overwhelm, and there's enough depth to the flavors that it doesn't get boring, either. This is easily my favorite chocolate beer, and it could probably become one of my favorite porters, as well.

I had at d.b.a. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn out of a gravity dispense cask. It's quite dark, deep brown with a good amount of head and lacing. Has a nice chocolate scent.
If you were trying a chocolate porter for the first time this is exactly what you would expect it to taste like. It has a beautiful blend of chocolate mixed with some cocoa/coffee and a touch of vanilla. Fine brew.

Reviewing from this past weekend's notes. On tap at BAR
A: Dark brown with a thin coffee head. No lacing to speak of
S: A wonderful dark chocolate and vanilla aroma. There is also some roasted coffee here
T: The same chocolate/vanilla combination detected on the nose. Oh my, this is goodness in a glass. There is some alcohol presence, but it is very minimal
M: So smooth and creamy. It is well carbonated. This leaves a smoked/roasted malt taste on the palate for a little while
D: Fantastic. I am not a big fan of porters but this won me over. It was the only thing I drank all night even though there were several other appealing beers on tap. Easily my favorite beer from this establishment (I've been to BAR at least 5 times - just haven't reviewed any of their other beers)

I had this beer the other day while enjoying pizza with my wife. The beer is served cold in a pint glass. The beer arrives cocoa bean brown with thin tan head of wispy yet creamy texture head that fades to an edge layer rapidly.
The aroma is cocoa powder and some roasted malt with hints of toffee mixed in the background.
First sip is a silky smooth beer with soft spacious carbonation almost like on cask. Fairly thick body but still very drinkable brew.
Flavor is sweet brown sugar and cocoa mixing with some roasted malt and a little grainy biscuit, but the toffee flavor is more present than on the nose here. Could be diacetyl, but Im not positive, fairly sweet but not cloyingly and absolutely no hint of the ABV anywhere. Hops dont make a visit and the beer is immensely drinkable. Although if 8% more than 2 may not be the answer for the driving folks out there.
The beer is nice and tasty and a good addition for the winter season.

On-tap at BAR into a pint glass.
A: Black body with reddish-brown tinges around the edges of the glass, underneath a small, frothy, light-brown head that dissipates quickly. Surprisingly decent lacing. Decidedly average-looking, as I've come to expect from BAR.
S: Even from a full shaker pint this beer delivers a hugely satisfying aroma of bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt. Not complex, not original, but direct and entirely enjoyable. This beer simply smells delicious.
T: Follows the nose in terms of sweet, chocolate deliciousness, but adds to the depths of maltiness - subdued coffee roastiness, as well as BAR's trademark biscuity sweetness two-thirds of the way through. Slight warming alcohol comes through on the finish, but is well balanced with the dryness of the roasted malt. Great beer.
M: A little thin, but pretty decent stuff with the carbonation.
D: Unsurpassed for an 8% beer - this went down just as easily as any of BAR's regular 5% offerings, and my two full pints left me thirsty for more. This one could have gotten me in trouble, and I wouldn't have complained.
Notes: By far my favorite seasonal out of two-plus years of regular patronage at this brewpub, the Chocolate Porter delivers admirably in its specific niche. Hugely sweet chocolate notes up front won't disappoint the most ardent chocoholic, and the substantial ABV and complex maltiness succeed in making it interesting for more than just its namesake ingredient. Another bonus is that it's the same price as the whole lineup, so you get far more bang for your buck. Good stuff.
Cheers!
