When it comes to German Schwarzbier, Koestritzer sets the standard. The color is a deep black, with a dark brown, thick head. The body is lighter than the color would suggest, with light caramel and smokey flavors, well balanced by just the right amount of hop bitterness.

This is often my go-to lager when I'm in the mood for something dark.

Color: pours dark brown. sits very dark brown, almost black.

Smell: very full but very clean malt profile. rich melanoidins with just a hint of very light roast and caramel. low, spicy noble hop aroma. there is an impression of dark fruit

Taste: flavor is dominated by Munich malt melanoidins followed by a light roast component which isnt burnt or coffee-like. hop flavor and bitterness is low. finish is somewhat dry with a lingering, light, balanced Munich and roasted malt presence with a little more bitterness shining through

Mouthfeel: smooth, medium-light body with medium carbonation

Notes: very smooth, light yet flavorful lager

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a Pilsener glass. The label has very little info. No abv, no freshness date and no description.

Appearance: It has a dark reddish black body with deep crimson highlights. Over this stands a tall tan head which hangs on well and makes some nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: There is a dark roasted malt character with toasted and caramel notes in the nose.

Taste/Palate: The medium body has tasty toasty malt notes with hints of chocolate and caramel sweetness. In the finish the caramel like sweetness runs into a mildly spicy and leafy herbal hop flavor with moderate bitterness. I also pick up the slightest hint of minerals. This fades quickly and cleanly.

Notes: Over all this is a very well made and enjoyable beer. One of the best Schwarzbiers I have tried.

Poured into a pint glass. An immense 2 finger fluffy beige head which melts down to a nice 1/4 inch. Deep dark amber brown. Substantial lacing around the sides of the glass. Nice marble effect like a beautiful abstract work of art. A little bubbly cloud remains at the top of the beer until the last drop, though it does not taste overly carbonated. It is surprisingly light and not as filling as it looks but packs a pretty nice buzz. A slight bitterness of mild licorice with a near perfect mixture of fig sweetness. Very pleasant and refreshing. You could easily and happily drink a sixer of this brew. This is a year-round beer for every occasion and is one of my favorites though it is quite expensive and not for the economic beer connoisseur.

Poured from 12oz bottle into 19oz pilsner.

Appearance: Pours a dark dark brown with reddish hints around the edges when held up to light. Has a thick, creamy, brownish head that leaves a good lace.

Smell: Roasty, sweet malts- caramel and coffee. Touch of grassiness that doesn't seem like it should be there.

Taste: Roasted and sweet, tastes a lot like a slightly sweetened coffee. Just a touch of hops are present, enough to help the balance and add some spice. Also leaves a slightly bready aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth, medium-bodied with just a touch of carbonation.

Drinkability: I love schwarzbiers and this is the best of the style that I have had. I will be sad when I have finished the sixer of this and won't be able to wait until I get some more!

The beer poured very dark; it was black with brown towards the edge of the glass. It had a one finger head, it disappeared quickly. An occasional bubble of active carbonation could be seen bursting on the surface. The carbonation was displacing the lite lacing left behind after the head disappeared.

It had a well-balanced scent of malt, and hops.

It had a perfectly balanced flavor of malt and hops. It had a slight aftertaste that was pleasing. It was medium bodied.

It is very drinkable. it is a great beer.

A - A deep brown bordering on black with reddish highlights and a tan head that leaves almost no lace behind

S - A nutty, malty almost creamy espresso and bittersweet chocolate odor that floats lightly over a yeast and herbal mushroom like odor.

M - Prickly carbonation followed by dry dark slightly chalky textures that relax into a mix of salty and sweet with milky smoothness.

T - A dark brown maltiness and crisp nutty dry toasty malt flavor with lightly spiced woody hops and hazelnut. Gentle date notes in the middle adds to the complexity. Salty overtakes sweet subtly and leads to a clean crisp finish.

D - A wonderful session bier, full of flavor and quaffable. A delightful blend of dark malt and lager smoothnes. Worth a taste for almost any occasion - malty, sweet and smooth. Excellent in the drinkability category

Appearance: Darkest black with a tan creamy 1/4 inch head with beautiful lacing.

Smell: Roasted malts present faint bouquet of nut and caramel. Distant but detectable traces of vanilla, coffee. The hops are truly German with grassy fineness and light fruit flavors.

Taste: Like a chocolate malt milkshake. More milk than chocolate. Creamy caramel malt mouth with refreshing hop backing. Faint alcohol (odd for a beer this light)

Mouthfeel: Slight dryness. On the malt side but hops come through
with a spicy and floral touch.

Overall: Delicious and extremely refreshing. A classic.

Not quite a black beer, but a black beer. Looks a bit lighter than most stouts. Big, clumpy head that left plenty of lacing down the glass. Smells a bit of roasted barley, coffee(not black coffee, but coffee with cream and sugar) and butter. Wow. Delicious taste. Not complex, but with enough flavours to keep your palate interested. Light sweet malt taste, some butter and caramel, dark bread, hickory sticks, a bit of potato and some sourness to balance it all. Smooth, clean mouthfeel. An excellent beer. One that can be drunk all night, without getting bored of the flavours and smells.

One of my favorite styles; and one that's hard to explain if you haven't tried a Schwarzbier. Deep rich color with a tan head that lasts through the first few sips and then laces the glass nicely. Exceptionally smooth with a nice, rich flavor that is both complex (with roasted malt flavor) and extremly drinkable. Thinner mouthful than, say, the Sam Adams Black Lager, but there's nothing like the real, authentic Thüringian original. Well worth trying, as it is an exceptional example of the style.

Rocky tan head subsides moderately then sits atop a deep dark brew with a hint of garnet when light is shown through. Rich chocolatey malt aroma melds with a bread crust dry malt aroma to give this brew a rich scent. The taste is exceptional as this beer is light in body yet manages to deliver a depth of flavor that provides a wonderful contrast. Rich dark carmel malt flavors blend with chocolate and a slight bit of spicy hops. This is my first schwarzbier and after trying this i would definetly like to try others of this style as this one was very smooth and flavorful.

Wow... my first taste of a scharwzbier and what incredible beer to choose. A near pitch black color with a tannish colored head. belgian lace that clung all the way to the bottom of my glass. Aroma of malty sweetness with a hint of coffee. A perfect balance of malts and hops, nothing was too over powering to me.

A: Appearance is fantastic with a creamy tan head and a black body thats a couple shades lighter, highlighting its red and brown hues. I'd also say it has a pretty decent level of carbonation for a beer this dark.

S: A beautiful blackberry-chocolate aroma is evident , very light and crisp.

T: Taste is very interesting. Caramelized malt flavors come through a lot stronger than charred ones, giving this beer a delicate balance of fruit over espresso, coupled with a wonderful hoppiness that adds a bitter dry finish.

M: Feel is very light, clean and refreshing.

D: One of the most drinkable dark beers I have ever come across. Truly gives meaning to the statement that "less is more". It is not over poweringly malty, hoppy or charred, but rather combines all 3 in an amazingly thirst quenching beer, highly recommended!
