Deep amber brown... almost black, with a thin head. Aroma of sweet and roasted malt. Flavors are malt sweetness upfront, with some very mild coffee-like notes, as well as flavors of pumpernickle bread, and a touch of hop bitterness to round out the flavor nicely. Thin to medium body, with a slightly rough mouthfeel. This is a very easy drinking bier. Prosit!

On-tap at Red Lion Tavern in Silverlake, CA.

Appearance: The pour is dark red on the verge of black with a long-lasting tan head.

Smell: The nose has light-roast coffee and caramel malts.

Taste: Sweet, doughy malts brings molasses up front. Clean roasted malts bring coffee and dark chocolate to the mid-palate. Bitter hops join the mix for a dry finish.

Mouthfeel It's on the lighter side of medium-bodied and smooth with light carbonation.

Drinkability: This is a very solid session beer and one that can debunk a lot of the myths about "dark beer."

Pours a black body with minimal tan head and some lace patches. Roasted and toasted malts, even just burnt and coffee malts mix with sweet malts for a balanced malt smell with no hops present. Medium-body but very smooth, slight creamy and finishes slightly dry. Sweet malts like cocoa, toffee and bread mix with roasted and coffee malts for a balanced beer that has both sweet and dry spots. It gets smooother as it warms and also finishes a little dryer w/ a more pronounced alcohol burn as time passes also. Didn't really notice much hops at all. A good beer that has everything to make it sessionable, basic but great taste and low ABV so you don't have to worry about getting drunk quick.

Pours past one finger head of frothy brown, the larger size of the bubbles makes it dissolve down swiftly, good lacing but lacking in stickiness. Pure black liquid, albeit an amber glow appears around the rims and glass bottom, the liquid seems clear but hard to tell given the blackness. Soft malts and toffee scents stiffen from the pumpernickel, rye bread element, raisin, date and fresher cherry scents blend in nicely and are sweetened by cinnamon spice, only the slightest roasted qualities and with minimal hops presence. Medium-bodied, fine carbonation dances across the palate and keeps things lively. Coffee roast tightens up the malts, dark chocolate powder and focuses the clove, cinnamon spice as well. Pumpernickel persists but less bready here. Stronger mineral water component. Clean finish with weight downwards on the palate left intact. Sessionable, likely a good food beer.

I poured this very nice beer into my tumbler at 45 degrees. The beer was really black as it should be. The beer had a nice big tan head that hung around as it was suppose to. The beer also had nice lacing. The beer was bitter at the finish and had a coffee/toffee taste. It was very good and I would buy again.
