Dark very small head. Hints of caramel but this bottle has the metal crown taste.

Pours a dark chestnut brown with medium beige head. Aroma and taste is sweet roasted dark caramel and chocolate malt, some bready and yeast notes, mild fruity undertones, mild espresso like bitterness flavor from the dark roasted malt. A medium body, slightly creamy and smooth on the palate, moderate carbonation. The flavor and aroma come thru as it warms up. Overall a good and pleasant drinking brew.

Purchased at the LCBO for around $4.00 for a 500ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- 4.25- Very good dark brown. Lots of brown head on the pour that lasts a minute or two

S- 3.75- Pretty good malt backbone. Not a lot else

T- 4- Not bad. A bit light on the flavor. Looks better than it tastes.

M- 4- Pretty good. Not much to talk about though

O- 3.9- This is what I feel is the score. Pretty good but nothing special or work buying again

Food Pairing

This ok dark beer went well with...... Beef Wellington

Pours almost black save for the light hitting it just right, showing the true deep dark brown colour.

Head comes through nearly an inch on the right pour, dissipating quickly leaving a thin layer throughout with very light lacing.

Aroma is nice but quite faint compared to other schwarzbiers that I have tried. Dominantly malty with a slight caramel hint and a trace of coffee.

Taste and mouth feel are where this one shines.
Lots of malt and caramel flavour, with some cocoa showing through, slight coffee and some dark fruit in the backbone. Drinks nice and smooth. Great.

Overall, ive had better schwarzbiers, but this one is still excellent and i'd definitely have a few more.

Bottle: a standard embossed light brown 330mL bottle with a decent macro label. Looks the part.

Appearance: pours a dark brown with a light brown highlight around the edges of the glass. A great finger-and-a-half tan head hangs around for a decent time before dropping to a half-finger. Decent lacing.

Aroma: roasted malts - coffee predominantly - with raisins, maraschino cherries and some berries. Some caramels also.

Taste: the flavours in the aroma are all present on the palate, are well combined and come through quite strongly. It is also quite a smooth flavour - this is a good beer!

Aftertaste: the flavours linger through - particularly the caramels and heavy fruits.

Mouth feel: fairly light in body with a moderate carbonation - clean and crisp. Somewhat smooth too, which is nice for a schwarzbier.

Overall: this is a really tasty and easy-drinking German Schwarzbier (quickly becoming one of my favourite styles). If we can get great dark lagers like Monteith's Doppelbock and this imported for around AU$50 a case, why can't we get any Aussie equivalents for less than generally AU$80? Ruddy Aussie government. Rant aside, this one is great value and very sessional.

The malty sweetness comes through readily in the aroma, along with a touch of molasses, brown sugar, prune. The body is a very dark brown with faint garnet highlights; the head is light tan; lots of lacing sticks around. The flavor initially gives off roasted malt with malty sweetness in support; there is also some light coffee and prune-like fruitiness. The body is rather light with just a little carbonation, but it's smooth and mildly crisp.

The body is a bit light and minimally carbonated, but the aroma and flavor are very solid and thoroughly enjoyable.

Black color with red highlights with a thick beige head with good retention and leaving some laces.
Grainy malty aroma with notes of chocolate, mild licorice and lots of dark fruits.
Flavor with lots of chocolate, some spices, cocoa powder, a bit of caramels, a hint of homemade coffee, grains and nuts. Quite dry aftertaste with a bitter roastedness.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Great balance between flavor and drinkability. Definitely a reference for the style. Quite consistent, no disappointments from different batches. Great malt complexity, refreshing and clean taste. If you like the style that is a solid choice.
