Bottle purchased from Hyvee in West Omaha, NE.
Poured into an Ayinger half liter glass.
Best by 9/2011. A bit late on this one, as I am with everything.

Pours a large off-white head made up of smaller sized bubbles giving it a dense, creamy effect. Foam gradually recedes to a thin ring around the glass. Some lacing is left after the decline, declining with each swirl of beer. Body is a very dark brown in color, when held to light, it appears to a be a super-dark, transparent amber.

Aroma of diluted, roasted barley malt, milk chocolate, a bit of raisin and prune.

Tastes bready, with hints of chocolate, like typical lager flavors joined to dense bread blended with faint cocoa. Faint sweetness, lager yeast fruitiness, and very faint mint in mid-taste, otherwise same as opening of bread and diluted chocolate. Aftertaste of biscuits with added cocoa (cereal and chocolate).

Medium-bodied throughout, with a moderate level of carbonation that works with the heft of the body. The result is a very creamy mouthfeel, smooth from beginning to end.

I was excited to try this beer, but found it somewhat lackluster in aroma and taste. There isn't much development from beginning to end in either component, which led to a bit of placidity and boredom while drinking this one.

Poured from a 11.2oz bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

This one holds up to it's name until you hold it up to the light revealing a very deep brown. The head is large at first, but quickly drops down to a cap of bone-white. Aroma is lightly roasty, with milk chocolate and caramel malts. First sip reveals an excellent schwarzbier, it maintains a nice lagery flavor along with the caramel malts and chocolate. A touch of roastiness stops the finish from being cloying. The mouthfeel is smooth and very easy-drinking. Overall, a very nice Schwarzbier.

I ordered this bottle at the Cloverleaf Tavern, and it was served with a pint glass.

Kostritzer Schwarzbier doesn't quite live up to its name, pouring more of a dark brown than actual black. There are a generous amount of mahogany highlights, and about a finger of khaki colored highlights. Head retention is brief, and there's not realy any lacing to speak of. The nose is lightly roasty, with a suggestion of milk chocolate. There's also an earthy quality there. The flavor takes that roasty, chocolaty base and adds a subtle nuttiness as a second background note along with the earthiness. The body is pleasantly full for a relatively low alcohol beer. The carbonation starts off fairly bubbly, but mostly dies off by mid palate. Schwarzbier isn't a style I find myself ordering all too often, but Kostritzer's renditionof it is fairly enjoyable.

On tap at Old Heidelburg in Ft. Lauderdale. Served in a branded .5l tall glass.

A – Pitch black in color with a deep tan head. Good retention and solid lacing down the glass.

S – Nice light roasty aroma. Caramel malts. Coffee, molasses.

T – Caramel malt sweetness and a light roast taste. Coffee. Has a nice bready flavor perhaps rye. Brown sugar and light chocolate. Small trace bitterness at the end.

M – Very creamy and smooth. Medium body and carbonation.

O – Really dug this beer. Its very tasty and is a very easy drinker. Could have had a few of these. Might be my favorite in the style. Looking forward to more.
