A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2013. Picked up a while back from Booths. Described on the label as 'the taste of coming home' - presumably Mancunians will be familiar with this.
Poured into a straight pint glass. A deep reddish-brown colour with good carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of chocolate, faint burnt grain, caramel, mild brown sugar, fruity yeast esters and stewed hops.
Tastes of roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of dark malt, mild burnt grain, subtle coffee, a hint of chocolate, caramel, stewed leaves, fruity yeast esters and earthiness. Slightly sweet, with a rather harsh cardboard note in the background. A restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with OK carbonation but a thin, insubstantial body. Pretty astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter stewed leaves, cardboard and roasted malt.
Not a bad brew, though nothing to write home about. Looks decent, and smells like a brown ale should. Flavour is OK but a tad harsh, while the body could do with beefing up. Easy drinking but forgettable. No need to seek it out.
