Nicely balanced Red IPA. The rye is in there, and that red IPA flavor, but don't expect an in your face rye bomb here. Equal parts all around, the piney grapefruit rind hops intertwine with the aforementioned malt styling. Box of Hops is a winner, and Rustic Harvest is a worthy
offering...

I am nearing the end of my latest horizontal, this one of Ithaca offerings, as a part of the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the bottle: Nada. I dig the minimalist look of the new labels, but less is not always more.

I Pop!ped the cap as usual, but with these older bottles, I find that a gentle pour followed by a vigorous in-glass swirl works best. In this instance, my efforts raised just over a finger of foamy, rocky, tawny head that hung around briefly, but left great, sticky lacing in its wake. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17), but every time that I looked over, it seemed to be clarifying, leading me to wonder if there was not some chill haze going on. Nose had a pronounced rye-like spiciness, underlain by a mintiness and some caramel malt sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very spicy, so where the hops may have fallen away in the interim, the rye really saw its chance to shine. This actually had that peppery bite that I associate with Rye Whisky and since that is my Achilles' Heel in terms of distilled beverages, I was really enjoying this beer. Peppery, slightly minty and with a bit of caramel sweetness is how I would sum it up. Finish was dry, but more spicy than anything else. It left a cool feeling in my mouth, like I had been gargling with mouthwash. Mmmm.

Pours a burnt orange, left a fair white head that dissipated pretty quickly, left minimal lacing on the glass.

Smells fruity, maybe some floral qualities, minimal rye scents.

Overly hopped, the taste is dominated by its grassy bitters and lets nothing else through. Some minor flavors try to claw their way out during the middle and end, but are quickly swept away. The bitter does not stick around for the aftertaste, which is fairly neutral.

Medium-light bodied, the feel is on the thinner side, leaves quick and clean for crispness and low carbonation. A slight alcohol warmth envelops the end.

I wouldn't see myself getting this again, but it's not the worst IPA I've ever had, but certainly not the best Rye brew either. I wouldn't turn it down if offered, but I might just prefer water.

Pours a light hazy copper color with a thin head. The nose is nicely hoppy and slightly floral. The flavor profile is rather flat with weak maltiness and non-existent rye notes. The finish is dry and mildly bitter.

An interesting take on the red IPA style. Roasted malts and citrusy hops.
