APPEARANCE: 12 oz. bottle poured into a classic pint glass. Very deep, dark copper. Almost looked like a stout, but with a much more bubbly head - about a quarter of an inch thick.

SMELL: Solid dry, rye aroma. Nothing else. And I like it. Wow, seriously, just took another sniff and this stuff smells more like rye bread than rye bread does. Not sure why it isn't actually called a red rye.

TASTE: As the aroma would indicate, the rye flavor hits the tongue right off the bat and sticks around. This beer is committed to staying dry, avoiding sweetness and forcing the drinker to taste the hops - the way a beer should.

FEEL: Refreshing is the first word that comes to mind. Feels a bit like a dish scrubber going down, but in a good way. Can quench any thirst.

OVERALL: This beer seems to have been brewed for craft beer aficionados, not the average or casual beer drinker. This is a bold beer drinker's beer.

Best before April. Picked up bottle from friends who had come to visit from NY. I see this beer around a lot, and I have had it before, so this is like coming back to HopDevil and giving a review. (Which I still need to do.)

Poured into a pint glass, Cascazilla displays an impressive three fingers worth of thick tan/peach colored foam on top of a hazy crimson colored beer. The head pops away and leaves a solid coating of lace on the side of the glass. Can you tell this beer is well-hopped??

Immediate whiff of citrus peel! It's very prominent, and is layered on top of butterscotch and baked bread, with maybe a hint of bubblegum and naval oranges. It has been dry-hopped with Cascade (duh) and Amarillo, and this makes the aroma that much more aromatic.

Cascazilla crosses the tongue with bitter oranges up front, sticky resinous hops, and a good balance of toasted bread in the finish. The finish is also accented by notes of orange peel and a lingering minty quality in the aftertaste.

Medium body, decent carbonation that lends a softer mouthfeel, and a serious bitter finish that coats your tooth enamel.

A very good beer, that is a solid example of the style, with an intense hop profile that steals the show, and enough malt to counter-balance the intense bitterness. Not terribly "drinkable" per se, since the alcohol is pretty high here, but it is good for a round or two. It would pair well with some carrot cake for sure!

12oz single poured into a porter glass. purchased last week from CJ's Doghouse in Lansdale. BB date...Decemeber...thanks again CJ's for selling me another old beer. upon further inspection there are plenty of floaters. since its not the fault of the brewer I will try to pretend the beer is within the BB date.

A-a hazy dark amber/ruby color. huge head with the pour but recedes quickly. nice lacing.

S-hops, sweet malts, some spices, grapefruit

T-caramel sweetness. hoppy. pine. the malt is more present here than most IPAs. hence the "Red." not that it makes but I approve

M-medium bodied. for the most part the same consistency as standard IPAs, but with a little more creamy feels.

O-maybe its bias since I grew up a half hour from Ithaca, but I really enjoyed this beer. despite the past BB date. I haven't had a ton of Red IPAs, but I enjoyed the added malt that was present. a ton of flavor and very drinkable.
