I was pleasantly surprised to see this beer along with the Belgian amber in my sampler pack. Good job Ithaca...

Pours a very deep brown color with muddy, reddish brown head. Smells like a sturdy porter with a ton of roasted, burnt malt and a nice equivalent amount of hops to balance. The taste is spot on with this one. I have had a few smoked beers, mostly porters, but a couple stouts, and a really interesting wheat bee that Victory made for a one-time-deal and was amazing so that really pissed me off... but that's another story. I have come to find out in my own experience that you can smoke any beer, but to have the right smokey flavor is key. It needs to be slid onto the pallet just right, it needs to work well with the hops, and it needs to linger right. I think that this porter does most of these things extremely well, especially the linger. There is a quality porter to be had here with nicely balanced aspects you would expect from a good porter, and the smoked flavor is really complementary of that. There is a nice hickory smoked, raw, campfire taste to it that reminds me of drinking beer in the fall next to a campfire freezing my ass off. Perfect.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours dark cherry black with not even a whole layer of head.
S - Big smoke attack, hickory chips soaked in apple cider, burnt cherrywood, a little bit of bacon, big roasted malt.
T - Smoke is definitely prevalent but there's a major unbalance, there's a ton of acidic tart cherry and apple flavor mid through end, the smoke gets taken down a notch by it, it actually has an apple cider flavor to it, which is neat, but unexpected, big roasty malts and a hint of dark chocolate.
M - A little too thin and fizzy for my liking, but still decent, easily drinkable.
O - Even though the only area I had a 3.75 in was smell, i still have this a 3.75 overall because I think too many "smoked" beers really loose the smoked essence, its definitely in this beer, and its makes for a great aroma, but the flavor kinda looses it, still I was glad to try it.

After reading the other reviews, I wonder was it a bad case, or was I really drunk!!!! Unfortunately I was sober when I sipped this beer. I love smoked foods and beer, but this was like smelling the liquid smoke bottle that is for amateur's. The first sip put the bile from my stomach in my mouth. I thought it must be something else and took another drink.. More vomit, not good. This was a two sip drain poor and a good pranker for your friends. I shared this with many and found no one whom likes the taste of over smoked beer mixed with vomit. Either way stay away!!!!

Pored nice. That's all folks.

Pours a deep brown color with a wispy off-white head that settles into a light ring.

The aroma is of lightly toasted pumpernickle with a hint of smoke. The smoke isn't all that strong but it is a solid smoke note. Not much else in the nose.

The taste is of a buttery english porter with smoked malt. Toasted brown bread mixes with a buttery caramel sweetness. It is more caramel than butter, which is good. Light lemon and a general fruitiness. Typical porter. The smoke pops through here and there but its not dominate throughout the profile.

Moderate mouthfeel with enough carbonation to keep the malt honest. Sweet on the palate with enough of a roast bitterness to offset. Not exactly smooth, more crisp; easy to drink.

A decent smoked porter. Good starter for smoked newbies. I do prefer much more smoke than this and more of an earthy profile. However, this is a real easy drinker.

A-Black with a one finger tan head, clear brown around the edges

S-Good deal of smoke, not much roasted malt, leather, like sitting by a bonfire.

T-Starts with smoke and roasted malt, has some slight vanilla along with the leathery taste, no bitterness though.

M-Medium bodied, creamy, some carbonation.

O-Great balance out of a smoked beer. Others I've had are too smoke forward and they lose out on balance, this one however was well balanced.
