A - Damn for a porter it's much too fizzy and carbonated. What little head I got 1/4 inch of mocha quickly fizzed to nothing but a light lace ring. Beer color is a nice viscous black.

S - Smell seems to be spot on with a great deep smoked malts and mild coffee's. Smell of smoke lingers on the nostrils.

T - Taste seems to balance the smoke well into the finish. Taste of the porter seems to be light despite the ABV and mostly sweet with mild chocolates and a touch of molasses. Not bad.

M - Medium bodied and somewhat creamy.

Overall not a bad smoked porter if it's anything it has more smoke flavor than the Stone "smoked porter" Very easy drinking for a smoked beer.

Pours dark brown almost black with a small coffee head that recedes with little lacing.

Aroma is roasty malts with some wood smoke too.

Not as much roastiness comes through in the flavor. Really a little bland up front with some slightly sweet chocolate. The smoke aspect picks up on the back end, but overall this one is pretty sweet. Needs more roast for better balance.

Carbonation levels are medium, but the body is thin for the style.

Fairly mediocre and boring beer. Won't be seeking this one out.

Aroma: Smoky upfront, dark malts, more bitter than sweet. Coffee, hard to tell much else over the bold smokiness.

Appearance: Dark brown, nearly opaque, barely see some brown when held up to light. Pours a medium brown head, decent retention, ends up as a patchy thin layer of head. Thick around the edges. Mild to moderate lacing.

Taste: Smoky, roasty, and much sweeter than the aroma indicated. Nutty, mild coffee, molasses and burnt dark malts.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Mild carbonation. Mildly drying.

Overall: Decent brew. A bit overly smoky, no hop character. Is fairly smooth all things considered.

This brew was served from the tap at The Owl House in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a Nugget Nectar pint glass. The brew appeared a dark black color, blocking out all light, even around the edges. It sported a one and a half finger light brown head of creamy, chunky cake bubbles. This showed great retention, eventually leaving spotty lacing around the glass. Carbonation appeared medium, and no haze or sediment was noted. The nose was of a smoked ham on a cold autumn day around a smoldering campfire. The malts were dirty, leafy, and mossy, with a deep chocolate and coffee roast. Peat and wood were huge, with a milk chocolate sweetness to the back with warmth. Our first impression was that this tasted just like a smoked Christmas ham, with insane char. As we sipped, roasty malts with an extreme smoky, peaty air came through. This, truthfully, was reminiscent of smoked pork. The front also showed white sugar and honey sweetness to cut. The middle peaked with fig sweetness and more honey, further cutting the smoke. The mats were cleaner here, with more toast than roast, and deep chocolate and coffee inclusions. The finish was more of the same, with a resumption of the sweaty roastiness, bitterness of raw coffee bean, light metallics, and more of that meaty umami taste. With warmth came a balancing café-au-lait sweetness. The aftertaste breathed more with that meaty satisfaction, char of burned wood chips, and fresh grassy hops. The latter may have just been a mirage amidst the dark, dense forest of smoke. The body was medium, and the carbonation was medium. The mouth was left with a wet coating with astringent rumbles. There was good slurp and smack, and the mouth was quite happy. The abv is appropriate, but this one is a big sipper, due solely to the massive smokiness.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was, you guessed it, the over the top smoke and wood. This is a fantastic beer for peat lovers and scotch drinkers. Ithaca picked the best deep malt profile to stand up to this wild smokiness. At the same time, however, this overt flavoring could also be this beer’s downfall, as it may put off some drinkers looking for something less robust and potent. Otherwise, the aroma was great, and the feel was nice, but we felt that the balance could have been better, specifically with the white sugar sweetness at the end.

I had this on tap @ O'reill's at the Best western in Harrisburg. served in a shaker pint.

This porter is a rather unassuming black color with opaque clarity and thin cap of medium brown. The lace stickage is average. The smell is very nice with a good amount of woody smoke in there which compiments the coffee-like malt roastiness well. The feel is a little dry, however fits the style and the body is decent with a noticeable alcohol presence and mild amount of burnt grain astringency, generally a moderately full presence on the palate and finish is semi-dry.

The flavor is very good in this porter. There is plenty of dark grain flavor and the smoke presence is good -nicely melded with the malt backbone and adds some of its own flavor to enhance the base beer without going to far into the smoky realm to overpower the malt. There is a nice coffee and toasted grain flavor that carries a full taste and mild sweet tinges to balance the moderate smoke. I enjoyed this porter and feel it does well to provide the drinker with a complimentary smoke taste that isn't overwhelming and is satisfying. This is drinkable but deceptive with the higher than average abv for the style.
