Huge huge huge bubbly head. Kind of fun, but a little excessive. My first pour was very clear with a golden hue, my second was hazy straw-colored. Smells of tart fruit, like plums and cherries, and a hint of malty musk. Begins with a bright snap on the front of your tongue, smooths out in the middle, and then bounces to a almost sour tang on the finish.

A bright beer with a certain funk that is intriguing. Zippy and smooth at the same time, which is a nice surprise.

Poured into a large tulip glass a hazed lighter gold with a hint or orange a tight fluffy,sticky white head atop leaving a sheet of lace as it settled slowly.The Belgo-American influences in this brew really show thru in the nose,a Belgian yeasty slightly smokey and tropical fruity notes really show thru upfront and then a real noticable floral and sharp American hop profile comes thru and really stands out very nice with equal billing to both.Wow complex to the hilt its sharp and spicey at one point and soft and fruity next,one thing is for sure the hops ring thru in a nice lingering finish.The Belgian yeast component upfront with its slight smokiness and spice just overpower or even come close to that everything just melds nicely,very well done.With more of the Excelsior brews coming in soo according to the rep at my local Consumers I will jump to get them for sure I am really looking forward to the Old Habit.

Part of Ithaca's new Excelsior! series of bold, hand-bottled, bottle-conditioned beers. Brewed as a Belgo-American Ale with domestic barley, French wheat malts, Saaz and Santiam hops and a Trappist ale yeast. This is bottle #78 from the April 2007 release.

This beer is cloudy and dirty blonde in color, with a fantastic pure white foam head that laces and sticks to the end. Hints of sugar, peppery alcohol and peach in the nose. Tight carbonation creams up on the palate, with a medium body beneath and some gritty grain tannins. Malts are bit one-dimensional, with a biscuity edge and lots of husky tannins. What stands out the most is the sweetness and the alcohol base, showing spicy and more peppery notes. There's some peach-like fruitiness going on, as well as a light leafy back, while hops come to play with herbal and floral characters here and there. Tannic and dry in the finish.

White Gold definitely defies today's style guidelines, which isn't a bad thing. It's basically a Belgian Tripel meets an American Wheat--it's good, but it could be great if it finished a bit cleaner and offered a bit more depth of malt.

Presentation: It was poured from a corked and caged 750ml bottle into a tulip glass. The label has a good description of the beer and the “Excelsior” beer line up. Also listed on the label is its abv (8%) and bottle number (E!015).

Appearance: The body has a glowing, deep yellow/orange color with a light haze and some fine yeast sediment. It built up a tall billowy head of foam that has great retention and makes for a ton of sticky lacing on the glass.

Smell: Its aroma hit me (in a good way) right from the pop of the cork. Pouring it into the glass I get loads of tangy wheat and yeast with tart green apple and pear like fruity notes. Hop note are there but very faint.

Taste/Palate: There are plenty of wonderful wheaty and yeasty notes within its solid medium to full body. It starts with a good base of wheaty maltiness with a just a slight touch citrusy lemon like tartness. From there it adds notes of white wine like grapes, a touch of dry alcohol, tart green apples, pear and some funky/sour dough like yeast. The finish has a dry hop spice character with a touch of citrus hops as well. It feels well carbonated and lively making it very drinkable.

Notes: Ithaca is bringing there A game with this wonderfully complex and very satisfying Belgian influenced Ale. I would highly recommend this beer to anyone that likes American, Belgian, or German wheat ales.

Pouring from the 25 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Pours a golden honey yellow, with a very thin white head that sticks around for the whole ride. Looks super carbonated.

Fruity and yeasty aroma. Citrus in there too.

Very unique taste here. Starts like a typical Belgian, but the yeast begins mixing it up with some orange zest and spice flavors. This makes it interesting, because it seems to lighten it up.

The mouthfeel separates it from the crowd. Surprisingly full for a lighter colored brew. The carbonation is there from beginning to end, and the finish seals the deal.

This beer finishes like nothing I've had before. It almost seems as if someone has taken a decent Belgian, and combined it with a glass of champagne. If it tasted more like Orange Juice, it would remind me of Christmas morning. Very dry finish also does well to disguise the 8% abv. This is a very well made beer.

L: Pours hazy straw under a 3” pure white foam cap that slowly descends to a 1” thick rocky foam that produces ledges of lace.
S: citrus, lemony, funky Belgian yeast, wheat, almost a hint of rye.
T: Very lemony with some light baguette in the background and finishes with a shot of hop. Very refined, after the little hop on the finish, there are long lingering lemony biscuity flavors. Develops more flavor as it warms. Yeast driven but an excellent balance between the yeast, the fruit, the malt and the grains. Finishes bone dry.
F: Very creamy, soft carbonation, rich texture. Medium body.
O: With this beer the brewer gives a lesson in how to handle yeast.

Pours a deep golden color with fluffy white head that persists around the edges. A bit hazy around the edges but somewhat clear for a wheat beer.
The aroma is wheat and pilsner malt, noble hops, and a slight meringue like sweetness.
The flavor is wheat malt and peppery alcohol, with leafy hops. Slightly hot but better as it warms. Highly carbonated and slightly prickly from the alcohol.
If it wasn't for the noticeable alcohol this would be alot like a belgian triple with wheat. An enjoyable beer only slightly overpriced.

Volcanic eruption upon opening.

Pours... absolute foam. Can't see any beer. The entire glass is foam. I've never seen anything like this. After a few minutes I can see a fraction of light golden opacity. The color is good, but it's just a glass of foam.

Smells of Belgian yeast, wheat, bubblegum, actually kind of smells skunky.

Nothing impressing me, weaker tasting wheat beer. Slightly more Belgian but nothing special. Salty aftertaste, like prosciutto. A bit funky and skunky.

Ridiculous amount of carbonation, thin and overly bubbly.

Not a really good wheat beer. Would pass on this in the future without a doubt.

Had this beer as part of a night of beer tasting. 750ml bottle E!047 batch. Claims to be a Belgian American Ale. Using French and American Malts, US Hops but with the kicker being Belgian, English and wild Yeast. This is ever so appearant when poured into a glass. Inches of foam appear unlike any American beer I have had. It paralells Duvel or a Belgian Quad with the amount of foam that lingers after the pour. Way more foam than actual liquid; which is something I happen to admire in a beer. The liquid hangs there as hazy unfiltered golden color. Herbal and fruit but definite unfiltered wheat characteristics.

Ithaca- White Gold (Excelsior)

A- Bright, somewhat cloudy, yellow with a huge frothy white head.
S- Big sweet fruits like grape, lemon, orange rind, and nectarine. Fresh cut grass hops.
T- Sweet lemony malt up front with dried fruits in the center. Hints or orange, lemon, and peach. Cut grass/ earthy hops and hay/ straw come through in the end.
M- Sweet and fruity in the first half slowly changing into a drier finish. Slight alc. and malty lacing in the end.

Overall- A huge (25ozer?) bottle that got sucked down quickly. Easily drinkable, light but tasty! Enjoyed this 1!(Thanks Charles!)

A lightly hazy orange-hued gold color, tons of fine bubbles and obvious lively yeasty beasties! A 2" thick and foamy, pure white head, wonderful retention with some slightly lacy run-off.

The aroma is very nice, deep red fruits like; strawberries, mandarin orange and kiwi's, slight honey-dew mellon with a balance of hearty wheat and dry summer wheat fields. The three varieties of of yeast really makes this a solid aroma. spicey, soft heat and slightly fruity.

A light wheat malt brew with hot cinnemon and ginger crispness is the first impression. The wonderfully complex yeast(S) gives many authentic Belgian Brews a run for the money in complexity. The yeast has a robust, wild flavor with lots of earthiness and succulant fruits. The depth of the yeast and hops is really bold, the light wheat malt adds just the right balance. This is one of my favorite yeast flavor's without being from an Abbey. The American, English and wild yeast adds up to IMPRESSIVE. A crisp, zippy feel and slightly dry. you can taste the wild variety in the finish most. Heat is well hidden but effective. The buzz is rather intense so don't let this one fool you!

Pours a cloudy, golden body with 3 fingers of egg white head falls to a cap that lingers throughout consumption. Nose is mostly grass and other earth tones, as well as tart citrus (lemon). Lots of tart lemon, grass, wheat malt, Belgian yeast, even a little funk to this offering. Big and bold for a Pale Wheat Ale, and also fairly dry. Lighter bodied and a nice dose of carbonation gives a solid mouthfeel. An overall refreshing offering from Ithaca.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a ton of carbonation and a huge white foamy head. The head lasts forever and leaves great lacing. The smell is somewhat pungent with a hint of clove,banana,wheat,and lemon. The taste is full of hop crispness with cloves,banana,wheat,and lemon. The m/f is light with all the flavors mixing well.especially for a high alcohol brew. A damn good beer,not the best, but something that should be tried if you can find it.

25.6 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn tulip. Nice design for the series.

Appearance: Peach-colored sparkly body with lots of bubbles, and a good soapy an frothy white head with spotty rings and clumps of stickiness and retention.

Smell: As it warms, which is when this should really be consumed, it ends up smelling like a Belgian golden infused with vanilla and tropical fruit esters, mostly tropical and pineapple-esque. A bit of funk and softness and creaminess is also there. More Belgian than anything, but I like how it uses the American hop varieties, which adds good citrus and estery aromas.

Taste: This is certainly a weird experiment in some ways, yet it also makes sense I think. There's a bit of mild earthy funk from the wild yeast. But mostly it's like a hopped-up and hyper-estery Belgian golden, with tropical flavors of mango, pineapple, and creamy coconut-esque vanilla. The softness of the wheat seems to give it some depth and nuance, as this is a very balanced and soft beer, yet it remains extremely flavorful. I wouldn't call it, as they do, a bone dry finish, as some sweetness still remains. But the hops do a nice job adding some of the bitterness to quell and possibility of too much sweetness involved.

Mouthfeel: Good and medium to heavy-bodied and very creamy with a weird and awesome crispness.

Drinkability: A bit pricey at around $10, but I liked the experimentation and all they tried to do with this. It's a different beer, which melds many types of flavors well, into a flavorful and crisp and good for the end of summer brew as the cold moves in. Looking forward to more in the series as I can find them.

Batch E!012. Poured into a Moinette goblet.

Eventually, after the crazy foam dies down in the bottle and some air gets in there, what comes out and into the glass is a supremely creamy head that's firm and just completely gorgeous. The hazy faded-peach color is also quite beautiful. Can't imagine a beer of this type looking much better.

Nose is completely Belgian in character. Straw/hay earthiness; farmy/funky yeast; citrus fruit; hints of tartness. Pervading mineral vibe.

Fairly strong mineral taste, like sucking on a penny; lemony tartness abounds; crisp green apple; pear; peach; earthy yeast, nearly dirty but not quite inhaling-in-the-horse-stall level; wheat offers a gentleness of flavor and texture; 8% alcohol offers up a slight warmth, just enough to feel it and add a certain spicy flair. Tart and mineral flavors are dominant, but balanced just enough to impress rather than overwhelm.

Gentle caress from very small and polite bubbles; crisp and dry yet creamy and round, which seems impossible, but it's true. Wonderful mouth.

I'm not sure "American Pale Wheat Ale" does this beer justice. "Saison/Farmhouse" is probably closer to what White Gold evokes. A delicate yet fairly complex beer, one I'm totally glad I picked up on a whim at Wegmans in Syracuse, NY.

This uses trappist yeast and so there is a good argument to make it a Belgian style. The taste correlates more closely to an American pale. There is a bit fo sourness offset more by yeast than malting. It looks like an American pale wheat and the aroma is interesting because of the inclusion of brett, and Saaz hops. A good Summer beer.
Had again 2.5 years later on tap and found it astringent wheat.

A - foam exploded out of this one as soon as it was opened, it took quite a while to settle down; poured a hazy yellow with a big, frothy, white head that had great retention

S - very peppery and spicy

T - peppery, spicy, herbal hops, husky, lemon, straw

M - medium bodied, crisp, faint warming alcohol

This is one of the more complex and flavorful wheat ales I've ever had. The use of three different yeasts really imparts some tremendous spice. There is a noticeable hop character that is very complementary. I really very glad I got to try this one. If I could get Ithaca in NC, I would definitely get another bottle of this.

A: Pours a hazy, pale gold in color with a frothy, 1 inch white head. Retention is fantastic and a nice layer of lacing is left on the glass.

S: Smells like a traditional Biere de Mars.. a heavy dose of wheat and Belgian yeast with some light lemon notes. Reminds me of freshly baked bread.. very intriguing.

T: Starts off with a mix of wheat and yeasty characteristics, followed by a surprising tartness.. thinking lemon, grapes, sweet vinegar, cracked pepper, and some maltiness. It's almost like a fine white wine. A surprisingly successful mix on my pallet.

M: Medium-bodied with hefty amounts of carbonation. It has a crisp finish like a champagne.

D: At 8% abv, this is extremely drinkable. It's not noticeable at all. I really enjoy this offering from Ithaca.

White Gold pours a light gold, almost straw color. It’s very hazy. Backlighting brightens things up a bit and gives it more of a true gold look. An incredible, foamy white head tops it. Carbonation looks very active as it stands about four fingers tall. It’s extremely slow to recede. Never completely dissipates. Lacing was very, very thick and sticky. Thick waves cling to the glass as it descends. Looks really good!

The nose is quite good. It’s very earthy, grainy, and musky up front. Wild yeast is easily noted, although it’s not really funky. Light lemon is apparent. Belgian yeast also has a notable presence. It definitely spices things up quite a bit. Pepper seems like the most notable scent. Some grassy notes emerge. Smells like it might be attributable to hops. Alcohol is a little noticeable, but is blended pretty well.

The flavor is impressive. It is earthy and grainy up front. There’s a little malt sweetness there, but earthy notes predominate. It’s definitely musky. Wild yeast doesn’t add a funky flavor, but it’s definitely musky. It’s a nice complement to the grainy notes and tastes good. I like it. Lemon and white grapes round out its fruity side. Belgian yeast is very tasty and brings a really nice spicy flavor to the mix. Pepper and light clove are noted. Grassy, earthy hop notes emerge late and are a nice touch. Alcohol doesn’t seem to be much of a factor. It’s masked well. Finishes earthy, grainy, musky, and spicy.

White Gold has a body that’s on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is active, but the bubbles feel rather soft. For a bigger beer, it goes down easily. This one won’t last long.

White Gold is a nice addition to the Excelsior Series. It’s a tasty beer that definitely has more depth and character than you might expect. I wouldn’t fewer bubbles, but that’s my only small complaint. Good stuff. Definitely recommended.

The current release of White Gold (E!40) should not be confused with the prior beers of the same name. The new bottling is a compete departure from the prior releases. It is fermented clean with traditional ale yeasts and lacks the Brett infection of prior years. It also seems to have been fermented at cooler temperatures as the esters are much more reserved. Additionally it is quite hoppy. White Gold still has it's characteristic balance and texture, but that is the end of the commonalities.

Unsuspecting fans of the old White Gold are in for a surprise and maybe a bit of disappointment. Still a tasty beer, but very very different.

Batch E!008 pours an effervescent apricot/orange with 2+ fingers of sand colored head. Very good head retention & lacing

S: A riot of orchard fruit, apple blossom, grainy notes

T: Pears, honey, a hint of dry apple cider & a bit of musty grain up front. A kiss of warming cider, then earthy apple skins, dry apricot, pears & honey as this warms,plus a touch of white grape. More white grape & some dirt in the finish along with semi puckery dry notes, cream of wheat ( detractor ), almost pulled a 4.5

MF Medium bodied, effervescent, grainy & warming

Drinks pretty nice, but the ABV & complexity of this do hinder me a bit. Loved the Franco-Belgian flair of this! Makes me think tripel

Hazy golden orange color with billowy white head that for a minute had me thinking Gusher! however, its just fine... more than fine...
At once smells both hoppy and tart. Skunky noble hops, grapefruity orange-apricot American hops, juicy grape, and a lemony lactic twinge. Nice.
Sweet and fruity, an almost tutti frutti or juicy fruit flavor dominates, followed by tangy orange and tropical fruit juicy tartness which finishes on a dry, hoppy and slightly bretty finish. Very surprising, in an interesting and pleasant way!
Thick juicy mouthfeel goes really well with natural citrus fruity flavors and aroma. Very sessionable and interesting beer, supremely drinkable. Comparable to a Fantome saison, tart, but delicately balanced.

Out of a 750ml capped and foiled bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a nice rocky pure white head that quickly dissipated into a sparse cap but left beautiful lacing. The aroma is fruity, a blend of pineapple and green apple, some peppery spice, and a light juicy hop. The taste is subtle but nice. Some tropical fruitness followed by what seems to be yeasty phenols, some wheat malt characteristics. The feel is moderate, almost light, with fizzy carbonation, which makes this damn drinkable. The 8%abv nowhere to be found. This is a beer that is not meant to fit a style. It clearly has some european influence, which I guess makes it a cross between a BPA and an American wheat. Very unique.

What a nice beer! Batch E!005. The label points out the hybrid nature of this brew and all. In the end what matter is what's in the glass. This is a wonderful creation. Big head and good lacing. Mild nose with American wheat, Belgian wit and yeast. Citrus notes and a mild spiciness.

Taste is much the same with layer upon layer of complexity. Vanilla, orange, wheat malt, curacao. A very mild alcohol kick in the finish, so well integrated that you just forget about it. It is a great mix. I may come back and add to the list. Feel is light medium and mildly carbonated in a light velvety way.

Drinkability is soo nice. The abv never calls attention to itself. This is a quenching beer that is easy to quaff in hot and cold weather.

-Belgo-American ale. Batch E!022.

A: Poured a hazy lemonade color with light orange hues and an outright explosive carbonation factor that literally looked like a torrential tropical storm inside the glass. Large bran flake like yeast matter race up and down inside the glass in the strong circulating current. The wild yeast was evident upon the pour yielding a quickly evolving snow white rocky head that rose with authority into a towering structure. All the time I was marveling at the beers coloring and head in my glass, unbeknownst to me the bottle was spewing foam like an erupting volcanoe at a steady and fast rate forcing me to run for backup glasses to catch the runoff and do some containment and reclamation effort. The lacing provided an incredible coverage on the glass of large patches of foam after the slow retreat of the head. After more then 5 minutes the effervesce eventually settles down a bit revealing a thick haziness and coloring that was similar to orange juice. An absolute picture perfect example in the glass worthy of any beer mag cover. Perfect regards from me here.

S: Finally into the smell. A little less exciting here then the appearance, which was by itself a hard act to follow. Soft wheat and lemon peels first appear. Soft herbal notes and light hints of whole tangerines mix well together. Decent, albeit a bit light in strength considering the effervesce which I thought would bring more to the surface.

T: The flavor brings forth soft wheat and lemon peels much like the nose. Bready with citrus and soft grapefruit notes deliver a wet feel. Citric oranges, with some sage delivers some earthy and musky notes. The finish finds a some acidity and wet citric hops and lemonade quench that leaves with a bright zing and tart bite. Overall the flavor was incredibly smooth and very easy.

M: After the initial outpour of effervesce the palate appeared soft and luscious with a good fullness to it, almost like orange juice, that was slightly tart, smooth and viscose. A smooth, tart lemonade like quality graces the tongue on the swallow.

D: No way this is 8.0%abv is my first though, feeling more at home like a 5% session. Exceptionally smooth tart summer time quencher with session like attributes that I could easily drink all day if not for the alcohol. A fairly high abv with an incredibly smoothness of a 5% session and one I could drink more of and more often.
