Poured into a Dogfish/Sierra Nevada IPA glass from a bottle with (date?) code 140204. Hazy golden with a nice head and a rich lacing down the glass. Aroma is moderate citrus and pine, but I'm not getting much Belgian character.

Taste is similar--dominated by citrus/pine notes. A very traditional IPA profile. Malt sweetness barely cuts through and fades quickly to be dominated by the hop bitterness in the finish. Barely noticeable Belgian earthy-pear-clove notes hiding behind the hops.

Overall not my favorite take on the belgian IPA. I had this next to the Hopbloem and I strongly prefer the fruity hops used in that one with Belgian yeast. This isn't as bad as some bigger Belgian IPAs since it's got a mild Belgian yeast character, but what is there still clashes with the hops for me.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #88 (May 2014):

Fruity, Gummy, Yeasty, Spicy

This is such a beautiful looking beer, prepare for epic lacing on your glass. Fermented with “Trappist” yeast and brewed with more than enough hops. Great to see Ithaca flex their Belgian muscle a bit more even with this American inspired Belgian Style of beer as the potential has always been there.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice.

A: Tawny in color. Yeast was absent-mindedly poured, so there is some sediment in suspension. Very hazy. Bubbly white head settles after a time and leaves sticky web-like lacing behind.

S: Perfumey and floral hop aroma emanates from the glass. Freshly cut grass. Pithy. Some medicinal yeast character. Church incense. Blood orange underneath. Honey and Portuguese sweet bread malt scents.

T: Green and oily. Big dose of bitterness up front. Grassy and herbal. Pithy. Almost goes a bit soapy too. Deep toasty malt character. Honey. Pithy tropical fruits- tangerine mostly. Yeasty and medicinal. Long pithy and floral finish.

M: Medium body. Slight sense of weight gently presses down and the tongue. Creamy. Tingling carbonation.

O: I've been sitting on this bottle for a while, but the hop character is still insane. The yeasty and medicinal flavors actually match its intensity though. It's a bit much overall. It pounds on the palate and fatigues it in short order.

A - cloudy apricot hued orange. Incredible amounts of sediment suspended as if in isolation. Very frothy 1 finger head

S - fruity and yeasty. Ridiculous amounts of apricot dominate. Smells tremendously sweet and sticky.

T - nowhere near the flavor I expected. The heavy smells of apricot are not as dominant in the taste. Its there, but there are strong floral hops that quickly refocus the palate.

M - starts extremely dry and low carbonation but after the finish leaves you with a very oily mouth feel. Very unique on the mouth feel.

O - not terribly versed in the style. Was okay but not a return beer for me.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Portsmouth brewery stemmed tulip glass.

The color is a hazy orange with two fingers of foamy white head and some nice thick lacing left on the glass.

The smell is funky with a deep Belgian malt aroma. There is a slight hoppy aroma hanging in the back that mixes with a straw aroma with a tease of banana aroma as well.

The taste is hoppy at first with some grassy flavor coming out up front then changes to a Belgian malt flavor that has some slight fruit flavor with melon and cantaloupe present. There is more grassy/straw flavor that has a slight funk character here but does not move any further before letting out some slight bitterness at the end.

The feel of this beer is light with a drinkable body that goes down easy and is pretty smooth. There is a slight aftertaste that just washes over the palette and then is gone just letting a little malt flavor slide back in before disappearing again.

Quick notes:

Very hoppy profile, with plenty of citrus and a bit of tropical fruit. Blends very well with an abbey yeast presence that has developed well after a year. Shocking how well the hop aromas and flavors have been preserved.

The body of the beer is also solid, with a nice, medium and oily feel, and a great balance between the pale malts, hops, and yeast. There's a bit of a dry Belgian spice going on, but it's far less dominant than in many other Belgian or White IPAs.

One of the best of the style I've ever had.

09/2014: I'm not an IPA guy (yet), but the Belgian yeast in this helped balance it out and there was a subtle sour at the finish.

Poured into a ipa glass, has a golden yellow body with a small head to it. The aroma has a lot of pine notes coming through. The taste has a citrus and pine flavor, it is very balanced. Has a slight bite to it but not very bitter. Mouthfeel is good and smooth and overall a darn good Belgium ipa.
