Pours a dark purplish plum color with a one finger frothy beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Decent retention with sporadic streaks and spots of lace clinging to the glass.

Sweet vinous aroma with a strong barrel presence integrated into some earthy funk and acetic acid. Strong vinous fruit/red wine character with dark grape, sour cherry, currant and other berries. Not really familiar with boysenberry but that's probably what I'm picking up. Delicate charred oak presence. Acetic acid with subtle vinegar/vinaigrette but not harsh, unpleasant or solvent-like. Very nice, inviting arom with a decent barrel presence, luscious red wine character, funky/wild yeast and mild acetic acid.

Tart and puckering with a stronger acetic character than expected. Not as complex as the nose suggests with dry oak barrel and prominent vinegary sourness. Similar to raspberry vinaigrette actually. After the palate adjusts, the barrel notes stand out a bit more with a decent amount of charred oak and sweet vinous fruit/red wine character. Funky bugs/wild yeast and dry brett along with prominent acetic acid that's bordering on solvent but not quite there. Jammy, seedy berries along with grape sweetness, sour cherry and other dark fruit notes. Pleasantly sour with some nice barrel notes but the acetone is a bit too much for my liking. If it was toned down a bit and the barrel and fruit notes were a bit stronger it would be perfect. Still, this is a decent enough beer that's complex and refreshing.

Reviewing Boysen The Woods from Central Waters Brewing Company out of Amherst, Wisconsin. This beer is an intentionally soured version of their La Riviere Coule Belgian pale ale with boysenberries added, aged in a red wine barrel.

Score: 50

Tap pour from a 2014 vintage keg served in a snifter glass and enjoyed on 06/01/14 at the Local Option. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Pours a murky and opaque reddish-purple/grape color with a thin layer of head that quickly settles to a ring around the glass. 3.5/5

Smell: Boysenberries, vanilla/oak, cherry jam, brown sugar, and graham cracker. Really lovely nose. 4.5/5

Taste: Tart boysenberries, oaky vanilla and pie crust, followed three seconds later by a bold, lasting and unpleasant buttered popcorn finish. Tastes like a boysenberry flanders red with a side of Orville Redenbacher being jammed down your throat against your will. This diacetyl bomb of a finish is unfortunate because the upfront flavor is quite nice. This would probably be a good beer paired with a sip of seltzer water to neutralize the palate after every sip. 1.75/5

Mouthfeel: Light-plus bodied, appropriate carbonation. Big tartness with a little sweetness. 3.5/5

Overall: A nice and tart flavor upfront was quickly and utterly marred by a pungent diacetyl/buttered popcorn finish.

Cost: $9 for a 10 oz pour.

The perfect barrel aged sour. Sour as hell, perfect boysen aroma, great looking color and most importantly, the taste was spot on, sour boysen, oak, bourbon, and tart cherry are present. One of the most amazing beers I've ever had. I hope this is bottled one day and I would be more than willing to travel to experience this again. It's better than the New Glarus Very Sour Blackberry.
