A: The beer is slightly hazy orange amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that died down rather quickly, leaving lacing covering the surface, a thick collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of biscuit, caramel, toasted, and toffee malts are present in the nose along with hints of floral hops.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste starts off with initial flavors of biscuit, toasted, and toffee malts and is followed by a light to moderate amount of bitterness from the hops.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I really enjoyed the malt profile of this IPA, which was both complex and traditional for an English-style ale.

12 oz. bottle, with bottling code 10014 printed on the bottleneck. No abv listed anywhere on the bottle, but the retired entry for this beer lists a 7.20% abv. Acquired this bottle as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours the usual hazed burnt sienna orange colored body with some very fine sediment lurking in the glass. Less than a finger of off-white head that leaves nice sheets of spotty lacing. Looks alright for what it is. 3.5

S - The aroma is sprucey & herbal, rather than citrusy and piney. Earthy, twiggy, spicy, with some caramel malt presence. 3.5

T - Taste follows the nose - buttery / caramel / biscuit malts, and some faded herbal / spruce / pine. Much more caramel / toffee malt forward than citrus / pine / resin forward. Very nice drinking. 4

M - The feel is smooth and creamy, sticky on the palate. Medium bodied with nice carbonation. Smooth drinking. 4

Overall, a nice representation of the style, I'd say. I've become fond of more caramel / toffee / malt driven IPA's, and this one is no exception. Recommended if it is available to you.

poured 12oz bottle into pint glass.

A - Pours a light bronze color with 1.5 finger white head and moderate carbonation evident. Lacing is very heavy and coats the glass well.

S - Smells of citrus hops, Noble and pine hops, grapefruit, earthy notes along with English malt. The scent of hops and malts is very nice.

T - Citrus, pine, and Nobel hops. Caramel and English malts, grapefruit, earthy notes, bready malts. A bit less pine and citrus than the nose.

M - Medium body and moderate carbonation, with no bitter bite to it at all.

O - Overall a very good English style IPA. Nice to see Central Waters bring this back as a seasonal.

Pours dark amber with a lasting white head that leaves lacing.

The smell is mild - caramelized biscuit, some tea-like spicing.

The taste is of caramel with a floral, slightly aspirin-like bitterness mixed in, especially in the finish.

It becomes smoother as it progresses.

It has a firm malt character with a hop bitterness that seems stronger at the start of the brew, but less as it progresses, which is fine. It fits the character of a modern English IPA well enough...reminded me of one or two I had in London (perhaps a bit hop-forward?).
I liked it well enough to have the whole six-pack throughout the day.

Certainly worth trying!

"Lac Du Bay English Style India Pale Ale."

12 fl oz brown glass bottle with branded black pry-off pressure cap courtesy of Duff27. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery. Served cold - at fridge temp. Side-poured with standard vigor into a Samuel Smith's mini-nonic as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Four fingers wide. Off-white colour with pale khaki hues. Nice smooth, even consistency and fairly soft complexion. Nice thickness and creaminess. Fluffy. Could be frothier. Retention is good - about 7-8 minutes. Leaves spotty inconsistent lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Amber-copper of average vibrance. Translucent and transparent. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears well-carbonated. Not unique or special for an IPA, but it's also not the typical boring clear copper colour of most beers in the style. I'm optimistic. There are no obvious flaws.

AROMA: English malts. Caramalt. Biscuit malt. A hint of graham cracker. Floral hop notes. Faint toasted malt. Caramunich malts. Very light pine.

I expected a hoppier aroma. This is decent and seems balanced, but nothing stands out. I can't say it's any better than most average IPA aromatics, but it's generally appealing. Mild in strength and pleasant.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

TEXTURE: Immediately, I notice an unbecoming scratchiness and roughness on the palate which doesn't work at all. Otherwise, it's aptly smooth and wet, and the beer is well-carbonated - though perhaps a bit overcarbonated. It's medium-bodied and has an apt thickness. Not creamy or soft, to its detriment. It does get coarse and dry on the finish which really doesn't work well - especially with the aforementioned scratchy rough feel. It drags on the palate, unnecessarily, impeding its ability to be refreshing or comforting on the palate. Overall, this texture suits the taste only decently, and could really use some work.

TASTE: English malt provides the effective core of the body. I find hints of graham cracker and toffee, as well as some faint caramalt. It's not too sweet, and the English malts work well here.

But the hop profile is too limited and reticent to be of much interest to the discerning drinker. A kiss of pine, light resins, some generic floral hop character...who cares? The choices of hops here don't fit well with the well-executed malty core, and there's insufficient hop flavour to really deliver on the style.

It's imbalanced towards the malty side, but isn't too sweet. It just doesn't bring enough to the table in terms of hop character. While I do like it in a general sense, I'm not quite sure what they were going for. There's some limited subtlety here, and some nice depth of flavour in terms of the malts, but hops should be the star of the show, and they aren't. It has decent complexity, but fails to bring the intricacy, nuance, and impeccable layering of flavour needed for a truly great beer in the style.

Average duration and amplitude of flavour. Below average intensity of flavour.

OVERALL: Absolutely a drinkable English IPA, but unfortunately not a particularly notable one. I wouldn't recommend it to friends or trade partners, nor would I want to have it again unless it was really fresh on-draught or something. Above average, but overall an uncommon miss from Central Waters. Far from their best work, but I suppose it's worth chancing if you come across it.

Pours a dense, resiny, tan head that has ridiculous persistence and laces madly. Initially, a citrus hop aroma, but caramel can be detected once the head finally collapses. Burnt umber color. Starts with a toasty malt and flash of caramel. Moves quickly into a medium-high bitterness; citrus rind and pine. Bitterness hangs on, leaving a finish dominated by citrus rind bitterness.

This isn't too bad. The finish is a bit overly lingering. I'd like to have a little more variety of hop profile into the finish. That being said, I typically dislike English-style IPA's, but this one is drinkable.
