Poured from bottle into a snifter. 2011 vintage. Thanks pantanap.

A - pretty standard deep black with light brown head

S - bourbon is dominant with some roast backing it up

T - like the nose, bourbon is the highlight which I want in beers of this style. Drinkable for the abv with a intermingling of roast and chocolate.

M - thin for a -bal stout. Perhaps a touch more carbonation than I would like.

O - as far as barrel aged stouts go I'd have to put this smack dab in the middle. Being thin and having a boozy character the main detriments.

12 oz. bottle from '11

A: Dark black color that left a nice lingering brown head. Looked fairly heavy and left a nice lace around the glass.

S: Bourbon smell was quite noticed. Smelled of oak, chocolate. It was devine!

T: Bottle was still on the hot side, which was disappointing, but the flavor of the bourbon was quality. For sure, a redeeming factor.

M: I expected some alcohol flavor, but this wasn't as mellowed out as I was hoping. I'm thinking it would have been better after the cellar for a few more months.

O: I liked this much more than Peruvian Morning and it probably would have been rated higher if aged a bit more in the feel/taste areas. Smelled great though. I'd like to try it again after some integration.

A - Pitch black, zero light gets through. Cream colored head quickly dissipates to a thin film

S - Smells very inviting, a combination of sweet bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and fresh roasted coffee beans.

T - Very dry and roasted coffee flavors. Bourbon is not as prevalent as it was in the aroma, but the sweetness is still there.

M - Surprisingly thin. Definitely not as thick as I was expecting.

O - Not the behemoth I thought I was getting myself into, but still a tasty stout.

A 12 ounce bottle from fvernon; December 2011 vintage. Thanks man! Poured into a tulip glass.

Pours a dark brown color that appears black in the glass. A thin veil of bubbly, almost soapy beige head forms, dissipating quickly to a ring and scattered patches of bubbles. Scattered patches of bubbles cling to the glass as lacing.

Upon opening the bottle, the aroma of ethanol is immediately noted. Once in the glass, a bouquet of vanilla, bourbon, oak, and toffee open up. Some cane sugar, caramel, and faint molasses are notable as well.

Flavors of vanilla, oak, hazelnut, and whiskey lead, with toffee, caramel, and sugar following suit. Some roasted grains and dark fruits pull through towards the rear, and ethanol appears at the finish.

Mouthfeel is thick, coating the palate and offering several lingering flavors. A syrupy texture lingers, and a dry finish is accentuated by a slight ethanol burn. Ample carbonation helps cut through the viscocity.

Overall, this is another solid offering from Central Waters' barrel program, but I think some more time in the bottle would have helped it improve further.

2011 Vintage

A= Pours a deep black color with a half finger of thick head on it. The head is a nice light tan color and leaves behind some spotty lacing on the side of the glass.

S= Previous experience with bourbon barrel beers from CW would tell me that this would be all barrel and nothing else but this is an exception. The stout under the barrel is very well made. Lots of roasted malt and when mixed with the barrel it sort of leaves a peanut butter aroma. Bourbon and oak with vanilla as well as roasted oak.

T= The taste matches the aroma with the peanut butter. Nice mix of bourbon, vanilla, and oak. The stout comes through nicely with lots of roasty character. This beer was totally unexpected. A really nice stout with some of the greatest barrel flavor around.

M= Well carbonated with a heavy body.

O= This beer stunned me. Everything about it is different than most barrel aged beers I've had from CW. The fine barrel character is still there only this adds a nice stout to it. I wasn't expecting the stout. Worth the money and worth drinking again and again.

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for the gift, DarthKostrizer!

(Aged for 6 months)

Dark black throughout with a small dark brown head. This leaves the glass oily and with spotted lace on the way down.

The aroma on this beer is phenomenal. It's full of bourbon and oak character, without coming off harsh or boozy in the slightest. There's also nice chocolate, coffee, and slight vanilla notes as well. This reminds me a lot of KBS's aroma.

Unfortuntaely the flavor does not live up to the aroma. There's mild bourbon and oak character, and a little bit of vanilla and chocolate. There's also some ash and mineral.

Medium bodied with low to moderate carbonation.

I just wish the flavor matched the aroma. Then we'd be talking about one incredibly special beer.

Appearance: Super Dark. Very thin head that disappears very quickly.

Smell: Wow, sooo much Bourbon in that nose, almost to the point that I'm wondering if this is a beer or dark liquor. Almost a little too sweet for me.

Taste: Sweet and bourbon. Almost to toffee. The stout comes through at the end but the alcohol doesn't. This is like drinking a toffee candy bar. No hops present and the malt is kind of buried by the sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Good amount of carbonation. A bit thin.

Overall: I tend to be hit or miss on Bourbon Barrel Stouts. This one is a bit too sweet for me. I can't find the beer in this toffee bar. I have a couple others, I hope they change my mind.
