I poured this 12 oz. bottle into a nonic pint glass. Brewed in June, 2011.
A: clear, nearly opaque russet brown color, the cream-colored head quickly falls into a thin but persistent cap with good lacing.
S: roasted grain, coffee, some herbal hop presence (reminds me of burnt corn husk), bitter cocoa, a faint vanilla and caramel sweetness lies quietly underneath all of the earthen/roasted aromas like a sleeping bear.
T: the bitter cocoa and roasted grain are predominant right away, but their is a core of sweetness that consists of dried fruit, milk chocolate, and burnt caramel, the finish shows off a nicely balanced herbal hop flavor that balances the sweetness and roasted character of the beer. Nicely balanced.
M: medium-bodied, lightly creamy texture, and moderate carbonation with a mineral-dry finish.
O: this is one well put together porter, and one I can highly recommend. Let it warm in the glass a bit, and it will reward you for your patience.

Pours a cola like brown with very little head. Makes me a bit concerned about this bottle, as the label says it should form a large head.
The smell is mainly chocolate, maybe a bit of malt and vanilla as well.
Quite a bit of chocolate up front, there's some fruit and coffee, finishes with a bit of lingering hop bitterness.
A touch on the thin side, but the carbonation keeps it interesting and lets me know my concern about the lack of head is unfounded.
Overall a pretty nice beer. I consider it to be a dessert beer, as it reminds me a bit of chocolate cake or a brownie. It's maybe a touch heavy on the hops, but still goes down fairly easily. Glad I took a chance on this one.
