Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a hint of ruby. Moderate amount of bubbles and about one finger of tan head which settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A roasty and fairly sweet malt forward aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee. Dark roasted barley malt with hints of chocolate, coffee beans, toast, biscuit, caramel, cream, milk, and yeast. Hints of brown sugar. Subtle fruit hints of cherry, apple, and fig. Also some hints of earthy hops. A pretty solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and sweet dark malt driven taste with good notes of chocolate and coffee. Upfront dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toasted bread, and biscuit along with some caramel, milk, cream, and yeast. Sweet notes of brown sugar. Some earthy and grassy hop notes in the background. Also some light fruit undertones of apple, fig, and cherry. A very solid Porter taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy, silky, and smooth.

Overall: A very good take on an American Porter. Good roasty malt flavors with a smooth creamy body.

Pours a pleasing brown to black with a medium body and mouthfeel. Not as full and roasted as others in this arena, but something of a change of pace during a session. The chocolate malts are up front here, with a taste of fresh baked cookies. Not overly chewy, but with enough body to keep this as a solid option during Spring or Fall, before you need to go to the real warmers.

Poured from bottle into 16 oz. nonic. Dark brown with ruby highlights. Small beige head (despite the aggressive pour) with mediocre retention but reasonable lacing around the glass.

Very malt-forward aroma. Roasted malts, cocoa, and grains. Quite a bit of sweet toffee.

The flavor definitely shows the roasted malts. Bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Not as sweet as the nose with a spicy hoppy finish. Slight lactic-like sourness, but I think that's just the roast playing tricks on my palate.

Medium body and carbonation with a very dry finish. Lightly astringent between the hops and bitter roasted malts

Mudpuppy is enjoyable, but doesn't particularly stand out to me in any way. An above average but not really memorable offering.

A - Black with a creamy tan head that is retained.

S - Espresso with a bit of herbal/soapy hops.

T - espresso with a hint of lactic.

M - Surprisingly clean and light. Still somewhat heavy but lighter than most porters. Finishes wet.

O - Very smooth. Not overly complex but very good.
