This is a review for the 2013 Vintage. My old review was for an infected 2012 bottle that I got in a bad trade, gave that one a 2.21 overall. Here's hoping this is better - freshly released, poured into a 13 oz snifter, served at 55 degrees.
Appearance: Medium-dark brown, 1/2 finger tan head dissipates quickly, no lacing.
Smell: Bourbon, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and roasted malts, in that order. Nice.
Taste: Now this is much better. Bourbon and barrel flavors up front, with a nice coffee presence that really hangs around. Very little soy-sauce type taste. Beyond the flavor of bourbon, not much heat at all. A little sweetness to it, but it balances well.
Mouthfeel: A little effervescent for my liking, but full bodied with a nice thick body. Shows you dont have to be 12% ABV to have a chewy body.
Overall: I'm a fan! Glad to have gotten to try a fresh, non-infected version of this beer. I will sit on the other bottle I have for a year and see if the barrel characters blend a little better, but this is pretty great without any aging and highly recommended fresh.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a snifter. This is a 2014 vintage.
Appearance: Pours very dark brown/nearly black and leaves a finger of dark tan/light brown head, which fades to a layer around the glass.
Smell: Big, roasty coffee beans up front, roasted malts, light fudge. Nice balanced aroma with some big flavors.
Taste: A bit of vinous, slightly sour flavor upfront, along with coffee beans, some dark chocolate, oak, malts. The sour doesn't help the flavor, but rather nearly dominates it.
Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation with a medium, creamy body. Finishes smooth, a bit sour.
Overall: Definitely a nice, coffee stout, but the sour in the taste is a bit offputting. It doesn't completely dominate the taste but does give it a twist. Still, a nice stout.
