VINTAGE 2011 Notched as bottled in January
Big thanks to thehand for this item from my want list. Happy Birthday to me!
This pours a very dark brown color with deep garnet highlights. It produces a small head of tan colored foam which recedes to a surface covering film. The lacing is thick, yet quite slippery.
Huge, dark roasted, coffee notes. Light hints of vanilla, oak, bourbon and chocolate follow. Light spiciness. Hints of black strap molasses and a tiny bit of licorice.
The bourbon and coffee notes work hand-in-hand to provide a very nice level of balance here. Both are easily found, yet neither one outshines the other. Roast, spice, chocolate, coffee, leather, oak, burnt sugars, traces of dark fruits, and it goes on....
Medium-bodied with a medium level of tiny bubble carbonation. Nicely smooth, with a light hint of creaminess.
(This is considered a letdown, for me.)
I'd like it to be a bit more bourbon forward, personally. That said though, this is a tasty and easy-to-drink beer. I'd like to drink these on a regular basis.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a snifter. This is a 2014 vintage.
Appearance: Pours very dark brown/nearly black and leaves a finger of dark tan/light brown head, which fades to a layer around the glass.
Smell: Big, roasty coffee beans up front, roasted malts, light fudge. Nice balanced aroma with some big flavors.
Taste: A bit of vinous, slightly sour flavor upfront, along with coffee beans, some dark chocolate, oak, malts. The sour doesn't help the flavor, but rather nearly dominates it.
Mouth-feel: Medium carbonation with a medium, creamy body. Finishes smooth, a bit sour.
Overall: Definitely a nice, coffee stout, but the sour in the taste is a bit offputting. It doesn't completely dominate the taste but does give it a twist. Still, a nice stout.
