A - Pours a beautiful dark brown with a small light tan head with a long retention and good lacing. The appearance is like black coffee with some head.

S - This smells more like coffee than the free coffee I drink at work. There is a milky aroma and some chocolate as well.

T - Lots of coffee flavor and malty sweetness with about a 50/50 balance. The milky smoothness and hints of chocolate round the beer out.

M/D - Mouthfeel is (as I've mentioned) milky and smooth, fills the mouth and leaves a silky smooth chocolate and coffee aftertaste on the tongue. Very drinkable and enjoyable and I wish my coffee tasted like this every morning!

A - It pour black with less than an inch of mocha head. There is some lacing.

S - The coffee was noticeable immediately. After some warming the bourbon begins to come through with caramel and vanilla.

T - The taste follows the same path. Initially, it was coffee. Approaching room temperature released the bourbon flavors. The coffee faded to the background while caramel and bourbon replaced it. A lingering bourbon aftertaste was the final result.

M - Smooth and full with low carbonation.

O - I haven't been this worried about an infection since that time I hooked up with a chick in the parking lot of a Red Roof Inn. Luckily, both instances were infection free. This is an excellent coffee stout, but the infection rumors had me apprehensive. I am enjoying this beer very much on a borderline chilly Independence Day eve.

2014 Vintage poured into pint glass. Good God, I hope I do not get sick from a third straight year of infected.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark brown (almost black) with a beige head. No real sign of carbonation besides the head, but then again... even when I hold this up to the light, I can't see anything.

Smell: More bourbon-y up front than the barleywine, not quite as much of a hit as the bourbon barrel stout. Definitely has vanilla, chocolatey notes. Some coffee to pick up on.

Taste: Yeah, this is yummy. Smooth. Hits of vanilla, chocolate, coffee. Less of a bourbon taste than I was expecting, but it's there. The flavors melds together much more nicely than the bourbon barrel stout. Color me impressed.

Mouthfeel: Very clean. Heavier bodied than the barleywine or the bourbon barrel stout. No residue at all left behind.

Overall: Dangerously drinkable. I'm gonna cellar this as well and check on it next year. Provided, of course, these aren't infected and recalled.

The smell of this beer is outstanding, however the bottle was infected and the taste was on the sour side. Would love to try the newer batch on tap as I sense there is an excellent brew behind the infection.

Cam to me from the very generous Hophead 101.

A: Dark brown, almost black with a mahogany glow on the edges against the light. Poured a nice finger coffee stained creamy head. Great lacing shows from the start. The head dissipates to a small head but then retains it throughout. Handsome looking brew.

S: Roasted malt, sweet vanilla, a little coffee and subtle booze.

T: Man, that's a tasty beer. The alcohol is there for sure but it is a part of a nice complex and robust flavor. While still chilled, I get a rush of the creamy roastiness with a bourbon kick. It's masked by coffee, vanilla and a tart dark fruit. Absolutely delicious. When warmer, the combination of smokey vanilla and bourbon is more intense and just sublime. Beautifully balanced.

M: Nice full body. Medium but very gentle carbonation. Creamy and very slick and smooth.

D: ABV is pretty low for the style, so it's very drinkable. It's incredibly robust but very well balanced. The bourbon flavor is strong without over-stepping it's bounds. Fantastic beer. I will be re-visiting this one.

Deep dark brown bordering on black with an inch of creamy tan head. Some floaties are present in the glass. Aromas of deep dark malts with a blast of fresh roasted coffee and chocolate. Woody tannins and a kiss of bourbon. Creamy aspect as well, nice.

First sip is smooth, creamy dark malt backed up by a nice interplay of chocolate and coffee. Vanilla mixes with wood tannins and sweet bourbon notes. A bit of alcohol heat on the way down. Overall well balanced and the barrel character never becomes overwhelming.

Mouthfeel is creamy with good body. Not overly heavy which is nice. A tasty treat of a beer that I would seek out again if they brew it again! Thanks to kmpitz2 for tossing this my direction.

The beer pours dark brown to black with a tan head. The aroma is lots of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is more of the same with the addition of vanilla, oak and bourbon. Surprisingly, the chocolate is more dominant than the coffee but this is an outstanding barrel-aged beer that lives up to the high ratings that it receives. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Near black with thin brown head and some light lacing.

Smell: Vanilla, oak, coffee, and subtle nuances of chocolate and molasses, as well as a not too subtle booze aroma.

Taste: Tastes like a blend of all the elements noted in the aroma (vanilla, oak, coffee, chocolate, molasses). Overall, very well balanced, but this also means that nothing really stands out.

Feel: Smooth, slick mouthfeel that is just a touch shy of full. Low carbonation with an oaky, dry finish.

Overall: Nice Bourbon Barrel aged Imperial Stout with coffee. There are certainly better ones out there (Goose Island BCBCS, Founders KBS), but this is a great deal for the price at roughly half of the others.

2013 vintage

Poured into a snifter this beer is black with some brown highlights and hints of a tan head that quickly recedes into the blackness of this brew. Aromas of bourbon and oak hit you first with a fairly high level of dark roast coffee also present. Taste is like the aroma, dark roasted malts with plenty of oaky bourbon with a slight vanilla quality. A weaker body than some of the other big BB stouts but at this lower alcohol level that is not unexpected. A fairly high alcohol burn for this alcohol level. Higher carbonation zing than most of the style. I prefer this over most beers from CW but it would benefit from either a higher alcohol content or less burn.

A pretty imperial stout. Very dark brown, bordering on black throughout, with a nice dark brown cap that leaves irregular spiderwebs of sticky bubbles down the glass.

The terrible infection isn't nearly as detectable in the aroma. There's still some distinct coffee and chocolate notes left lingering, though any barrel presence has seemed to turn into a bit of a vinegar/sour/cherry/tart intrusion.

The flavor is indeed awfully infected. It wasn't so bad at its coldest temperature, but upon minutes of warming, this beer is undrinkable. Sharp notes of vinegar, sour, stale cherries, don't mix at all well with some lingering coffee and chocolate notes. Not the worst thing I've put in my mouth, but not a lot redeeming attributes here.

Medium bodied with high carbonation.

I will find something else to drink tonight.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness Chalice glass.
Label says bottled in January.

Appearance: Pours very dark and black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Decent one finger tan head that fades into a thin patchy layer. Decent amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: Big bourbon aroma upfront with some vanilla, oak, wood, and lots of coffee. Also some chocolate dark malts, smoke, and a noticeable whiff of dark fruit cherries. Definitely some sour elements here. A nicely complex and robust smelling stout.

Taste: A big taste of the barrel aging mixed with coffee beans. Notes of bourbon, lots of vanilla, some oak and wood. Lots of coffee and a nice background of dark malts with some chocolate and caramel. Also some hints of dark cherries in the background. Sweet and somewhat syrupy with the strong vanilla presence.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and somewhat sticky. Alcohol is hidden well.

Overall: A very good take on a coffee forward barrel aged stout. The barrel elements mix in very nicely.

Thanks to jh1982 for bringing this to the March Madness debauchery, sorry you got tanked at the tables the night before and couldn't push yourself to drink this one early the next morning!

Poured a dark brown, good beige head. Pungent coffee aroma out of this one, almost as if it was barrel aged, because a good amount of oak and vanilla seemed to pair with it.

Taste, alcohol well hidden, coffee still hefty. Good roasting, ample chocolate. Bitterness held in decent check. Could see a slight tobacco and leather to it. Slight. Bourbon, slight, just like the bourbon feel, no heat, not even warmth. Good consistency of the mouthfeel, viscosity. The vanilla and caramel really set this apart from too many one dimensional coffee beers. Sure, sometimes that's all I want is coffee, but sometimes, I want some complexity, and Peruvian Morning satisfies that urge.

Overall, just another quality beer from Central Waters. Deceptively strong, good coffee quality, would revisit as often as possible.

I always feel sketchy about sending text messages about this beer, like if too many Patriot Act Ninjas are following my conversation, "hey, let's get into some Peruvian Morning tomorrow," and then all of a sudden my doors are being busted down by the narco police . . .

Pours a very dark Brown with light edges. A thin head that recedes predictably fast.

Lots of toastiness, coffee, chocolate and caramel in the nose. Not getting much bourbon though.

Big coffee malts. Plenty of chocolate too with some roast to round things out. Medium to full-body. Very smooth... this is where the barrel comes in the most for me. Extremely drinkable!

This is my favorite Central Waters beer of all. Just an amazing stout from soup to nuts!

Pours black with a brown head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of robust roasted malts with large amounts of smooth coffee and smoother vanilla. All three are robust and in perfect amounts.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though the flavors don’t meld quite as well as the aromas. Roasted malts up front are joined quickly by smooth espresso flavors. Mildly bitter dark chocolate flavors join in shortly. Midway through, light vanilla comes into play, fading out into a mildly bitter ending. Mouthfeel is very good, with grainy carbonation.

Overall this was a very good beer and I enjoyed it more than the base beer – somehow the coffee was more robust even with the time in the barrels. A great beer that’s well worth a shot.

(Served in a snifter) 2011 batch

A- This beer has a black body with tiny bubbles racing up the sides to a thin creamy tan head that last a good bit.

S- The bourbon barrel with some vanilla notes and a nice graham note that grows as the beer opens. The finish has a soft cold coffee aroma that comes through.

T- The mellow but full flavor oak barrel takes on some tootsie roll flavors as it opens up followed by a soft dark coffee finish. There is a peaty bourbon note that has some capsaicin and green hop note to the finish. As the beer warms there are some berry flavors and cola qualities to the malt flavor.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel and a soft fizz with a gentle alcohol warmth only coming through when it is pretty warm.

O- This is light on malt flavor but full on other character that has a nice depth and very drinkable.

Had on tap after much anticiation and was not disappointed.

A: Creamy tan head with a dark, dark body..tinges of caramel color around the edges. Nice lacing, stays on glass.

S: Toffee hit, then burnt coffee and roasted malts. Wonderful, powerful, had to remember I was going to drink it and not smell it all day.

T: Mocha, strong coffee with firm tastes of lactose. I thought Peruvian Morning would be more coffee than anything, but I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by the milk and chocolate tastes. Ends in slight alcohol burn.

M: Mildly thick and chewy, but a smooth chewy.

D: Awesome coffee, too many would be filling, but would not mind starting the mornings out with this.

A: Pours a clear dark brown. Sits a darker, murky brown with a mahogany/ruby tinge and beige cream head.

S: Evolves well with warmth. Bourbon - vanilla, oak, - fresh medium roast coffee, rich chocolate, some nice subtle spices - hazelnut and cinnamon.

T: Rich and incredibly smooth. Vanilla, oak, fresh coffee, rich chocolate. The spice notes from the nose are amplified and give it an even greater breakfast feel. Wonderful

P: Medium, creamy. Not a big feeling stout, but appropriate for the abv

O: Outstanding. A great BA breakfast stout. Coffee is not dominating, but very fresh and noticeable.

2013 Vintage

A - Dark dark brown. light mocha thin head, very opaque, slight carbonation rising

S - Coffee, carmel, chocolate, vanilla, toffee, slight bourbon

T - South American sweet coffee, sweet carmel, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, finish was low hops bitterness and nice smooth low booze taste

M - carbonation is excellent, a bit thin, froth level is low

O - Love that the bourbon does not dominate this beer. The south american coffee is front and center and tastes wonderful. The carbonation is right on but I felt the mouth was a bit thin and not as frothy as I'd hoped. CW fixes the mouth I think they have a world class stout- its that good.

2011 vintage poured into a pint glass.

A: As dark as the coffee it's named for, with half an inch of a light mocha head that dissipated quickly and provided no lacing.

S: Bourbon. Seriously, that's the entire nose. I could've just as easily been smelling a glass of Makers Mark.

T: Tastes of coffee, bourbon, and malt all in about equal flavors, with perhaps the faintest hint of chocolate on the finish.

M: Perhaps a bit more carbonated than one might want in a DIS, and a bit thinner as well.

D: To me, this just isn't as drinkable as other bbal stouts. The booze is really forward on this, and not for the better in my opinion. By no means is this a BAD beer, but I definitely won't be rushing out to buy any more.

Picked this up on a beautiful tip by the salesguywhocantscoremeHawkstix--Lazzman (AKA KBS lover). Very dark brown-almost black with fluffy one inch head. Light tan on the edge and sticky lacing.

I could smell this all night long. Complexity leads to intrigue--vanilla, cola bourbon sweetness, coffee, dates, and malt chocolate concrete milkshake. Yeah, pretty solid.

Aroma lends well to the first sip. I love the bourbon. Vanilla follows with sweet malt. Another BA that drinks like a bourbon and splash of coke for me. Bourbon and roast coffee linger in the nose.

Creamy but not thick. I appreciate that I get no bitterness. Very pleasing.

Had this been thicker, I would've put this up there with BCBCS. A splendid quaff that is, IMO, up there with best in class. One would have to do a double take to make sure this wasn't KBS. If you see it, pull the trigger.

A: A decent looking beer, very deep brown, not quite black, with a small tan head on top that leaves a nice cap on top. No lacing though.

S: Has a really nice aroma, plenty of coffee and chocolate. Some caramel and a little vanilla mixed in.

T: The flavor however, is quite a bit different. It took a while for the infection to really show through, it was masked by the temperature at first. Rather sour, some cherry and a bit of vinegar mask some light chocolate and coffee underneath.

M: Medium bodied with low carbonation.

O: Was hoping it wasn't infected and had high hopes based off the aroma, but the flavor was just off.

Pours a dark caramel brown, but black in the glass. Bubbly tan 1cm head. Low retention and spotty lacing.

Nose is fantastic. Big, bright and robust fresh coffee with some nice vanilla and nuttiness.

Flavor is very nice. Wonderful big bright roasted coffee that just lingers on the palate. Coffee , coffee and more robust coffee. But blended quite well.

Medium bodied with medium+ carbonation.

Overall this is a coffee lovers dream beer. Fresh and robust all around. A real nice beer.

12oz bottle acquired awhile ago via trade, served in a DFH signature glass

A - pours with a small amount of loosely bubbly khaki colored foam, the beer is near black in color with just some ruby highlights when held up to light.

S - very strong bold french roasted iced coffee...dark chocolate, toasted nuts...sweetness from cream, vanilla, oak.

T - starts off semi-sweet with dark chocolate, vanilla beans, oak...bitterness comes through nicely in the second half with very fresh dark roasted coffee beans, woody oak, and a light alcohol burn.

M - thin body, carbonation is very light yet tight and bubbly. finishes with lingering bitter coffee and sweet oak.

D - as a stout, very good...as an RIS, missing the big body and appearance. still quite yummy with a very well done coffee+chocolate emphasis.

Pours to a opaque dark chocolate color with a fleeting beige cap, that eventually lingers as a skimming and a collar.
Coffee grounds, caramel fudge, hazelnutty-black cherry-charred oak bourbon barrel evidence. All that is well and good, and basically as expected...what comes as a surprise is the sharp dill notes. Yeah, that's right. Like pickles. I don't know what to say, besides, what the fuck?
Tarry, roasty malts wriggle their way through the mouth. Wisps of smoke precede the broader (and bitterer) coffee beans. Fudge pops up and smothers it all in a nutty chocolate. Barrel aging manifest with primarily char and oaky tannins, though smaller traces of black cherry, hazelnut, and vanilla. Dill notes bleed over from the nose, with a slight sourness that is well out of place. It ends with a (minor, but notable) lingering charred astringency and crushed aspirins.
The body is medium-full with a rolling, minor carbonation, that gives it a near fluffiness. It's not as rich and round as I expected, or feel it needs to be.
If this is their same Coffee Stout recipe aged in Bourbon barrels, then something has gone wrong. Maybe more barrel aging is necessary to extract the sweeter woody flavors and not merely the char?
I had pretty high expectations, and was let way down. I've never tasted dill in a beer before. So chalk one up for experience.

I love Bourbon and I love beer. But part of me wants the whole Bourbon barrel-aged beer bubble to burst. Sometimes it works magic (GI BCS), but it seems a gimmick more often than not. Here it simply serves as a detriment.

A lot going on here. The coffee characteristic is amazing and I am saying that as a non-consumer of offee. Inredible taste for what it is. Good integration of the bourbon. Appearance is dark brown and big lacey. Great aroma. A bit acidic in the finish.SilverX's bottle.
Had another bottle courtesy of Jon and it was just as good, if not smoother.
