On-tap at the Central Waters tap room in Amherst, Wisconsin. Held during the Great Amherst Beer Festival today, 10/12/2013. 8oz pour into a plastic cup, which was then transferred to my Cigar City snifter.

Review #233.

Body is a hazy orange-amber colour with a decent 2cm white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Bits and bits of lacing sticks around.

Smells tart more than anything else. A solid bit of oak persists in the nose. Not much funk or earth to be found. I can't really tell this was brewed with cherries, to be honest.

Tastes crisp, like tart grapes with a decent bit of earthiness, but not overwhelming. Sourness quotient is not that high, but it is very hard to ignore. Sourness is mostly straight up lactate, but doesn't remind me of any particular fruit or flavour- it is just more of a pure acidity.. not a whole lot of cherry in here.

Thinner-medium body, good carbonation. Refreshing and not difficult to drink. Solidly balanced, slightly dry finish.

Good representation of the style. Not too overwhelming, not too complex and rather refreshing. This is a solid sour that doesn't go overboard in any department and I'm glad to have finally gotten around to trying this one. I heard comparisons to Russian River's Supplication here, but I just don't see it here.

750ml bottle, graciously shared with me this past Sunday afternoon, day after GTMW

appearance: served in a town hall tulip - lifeless carbonation, murky orange-amber body, no head

smell: funky aroma, notes of brett, hay, oak, vinous characteristics, cherry, grape skin

taste: Better than I remember the tap version of 2010/2011 being - quite sour, vinous grape skin, tart cherry, tons of oak, hay, brett, highly acidic, vinegar.

mouthfeel: lack of carbonation is pretty detrimental, acid, tart

overall: good first effort of the style, not at new glarus level by any means yet

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - No head on a clear reddish brown body. Lifeless.

Smell - Chardonnay bomb. Intense barrel character. Vanilla and oak permeate. Caramel. Not really any acidity.

Taste - Much more sour here, but not intense. Strong white wine again. Caramel and vanilla. Follows the nose, but the cherries come out in the end. The back end dries out and leaves diacetyl and white wine.

Mouthfeel - Dry, medium bodied. Easy to drink. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Better than I expected. Out of proportion on many flavors, like the wine barrel.

Poured from bottle into a tulip. Pours a good dark red color with a small head.

Very good flemish red aromas of sour cherries, some funk and tart citrus notes as well.

Good depth with a very good medium feel and flavors of sour cherries and a good amount of tart tones as well. Finishes off nice and dry.

This is a real good flemish red. Nice and tart with good flavors and aromas.

750 ml cork and caged bottle poured into a Central Waters tulip
Serving temp 45°-50° F, Ale aged in oak barrels with cherries added. Pairings listed on the back!

A - Low carbonation leaves little loose bubbles of off-white pinkish foam. Pinkish dirty hazed apricot in color. Vanishing foam is no surprise with all the bugs in this one.

S - Low notes of vinegar and bacteria fall behind the robust aroma of smooth oak barrels and bacteria soaked cherry accents. Complex bacteria is underlying, not bold, but works very well. More sour power emerges with a good swirl.

T - Sour cherries and wet wood flourish with barnyard notes of dry straw and funk. The flavor is actually pretty "thin" (not one dimensional, rather just light) but works well in this brew.

M - Nice light carbonation compliments the medium-light body and finishes out with a lightly dry, very sour finish.

O - A few tweaks and this could be an absolutely amazing brew. The sour finish does a great job of tying all the oak and cherries together with the bacteria-filled brew but I'd love to see a little rise in the flavor profile. The bugs are there and offer low underlying complexity, but almost no real malt profile comes though in this one. Regardless, this is damn close to Supplication. Great job guys! I can't wait to age some bottles and experience it's development.
