De Kleine Dood is a Belgian inspired Weissenbock brewed as a collaboration between The Local Option and Central Waters Brewery in Amherst, Wisconsin. Originally released in summer 2012, De Kleine Dood will be available in spring 2013 on draft and in large format bottles.

When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, De Kleine Dood - a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. De Kleine Dood is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit; and vanilla and bourbon aromas as a result of six months of aging on Heaven Hill Barrels.. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, De Kleine Dood is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

Got extra’d this recently in a big trade. Hooray! Large format bottle with no date. Pours dark brown and settles without letting much of any light through in the glass, with a khaki one finger head. Definite aroma of bourbon, huge oak presence, some spice, not much else here. Pretty bourbon forward nose. Flavor is big bourbon notes, a bit harsh, a little vanilla, settles with a little bit of spice and then a long caramel vanilla finish with lots of woodyness. Somewhat thin on the body, medium carbonation. Yikes. These sorts of beers just don’t handle the barrel well for me, and end up tasting very harsh without any of the sweet, pleasant nuance of the bourbon itself. Not getting into this one.

On tap here at Stubbys, poured into a goblet.

Appearance: darkish muddy Brown, no head at all. No carbonation it seems.

Smell: bourbon, vanilla, some toffee notes. Definitely a sweet smell.

Taste: a sweet taste with some bourbon notes. Not an overpowering taste that slams you in the face but a more "hey, how's it going" vibe.

Mouthfeel: yeah, really no carbonation to speak of. Goes down cleanly, with only a slight aftertaste.

Overall: good, but the barleywine and bourbon barrel stout offerings are better from CW. Both offer more complex flavors and just stand out more amongst their peers for their offerings.

Poured into a tulip from the bomber. A nearly opaque and deep brown with hints of ruby when held up to the light. A dense, tan head that leaves lingering lacing down the glass as you sip.
The aroma is a bit winey with some sweet malt, banana, and hints of dark fruit.
The taste changes as the beer warms and you slowly sip. it started out all plum and prune and ripe banana with hints of tobacco and booze and a nice bourbon bite. As it warmed, I got more dark chocolate and coffee and hints of vanilla.
The mouthfeel is outstanding! Smooth and creamy and luscious. Was not expecting that.
Overall, this concoction has amazing depth and is a real treat. Beautifully done!

Bomber bottle

Dark mahogany,very minor dark tan

Rum, dark malt sugars, dark chocolate on the nose.

Deeply flavorful with more of the same on the palate. Bourbon, burnt sugars and dark chocolate/molasses coming to mind. Hearty beer for a cold winters day

Pours opaque, black, with 1/3 inch head. Taste is dark fruit, raisins, figs, with vanilla, and bourbon at the finish. There is a bit of sourness. Tasty and complex brew. I prefer Central Waters bourbon beers more, but this is tasty.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A- This beer pours a dense hazy milk chocolate body with a thin wisp of tan head and some microbubbles that glide to the surface.

S- The sweet rich blend of dark caramel malts and big fresh barrel aromas lead to a brown sugar note and grape seed hints in the finish.

T- The rich vanilla oak and bread crust flavors blend with dark sweet malts and paper straws with some spicy cinnamon phenolics in the finish. There is a sweetness in the finish that is cut by the alcohol spice.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a nice alcohol warmth in the finish.

O- The big wonderful barrel flavor is complimented by sweet dark toasted malts and caramel malt character. A classic pairing.
