Notes/Commercial Description:
Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort is a Belgian inspired Weissenbock brewed as a collaboration between The Local Option and Central Waters Brewery in Amherst, Wisconsin. Originally released in summer 2012, BBA La Petite Mort will be available in spring 2013 on draft and in large format bottles.

When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort - a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. BBA La Petite Mort is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit; and vanilla and bourbon aromas as a result of six months of aging on Heaven Hill Barrels.. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, BBA La Petite Mort is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a 8 oz snifter.

A- pours a dark copper with a half finger of head. A wall of lacing that resides immediately.

S- dark fruits, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon, tobacco

T- semi sweet toasted malts, dark fruits, bourbon, but then I get a bitter almost metallic taste.

M- medium body and carbonation. A little thin at 9%, with a dry finish.

O- I love the aroma of this beer, but the taste just doesn't follow. Also, the thinner mouthfeel is not up to par for a 9% a beer for my liking.

Bottle into a Allagash chalice

A: Brown with some red when the light hits it. Some murkiness with a small off-white head

S: Bourbon...a bourbon smell like I get off a fresh Founders BB. I guess instead of stating the obvious, I will break it down to vanilla, dark fruits, and a mild tinge of alcohol which was not off-putting at all.

T: Up front I get a LOT of the bourbon taste. I really love BA beers, but I feel a slightly less amount of bourbon would help bring out the weizenbock base. I get some of the fruitiness, but I really wish there was a bit more balance there.

M: A light mouthfeel for such a bourbon forward beer. A great summertime BA beer

O: Aside from being a bit bourbon heavy, I will say I love bourbon aged beers and this is an excellent beer! This is my first from central waters and local option, and I've heard great things about Central water's barrel-aged beers and I can't wait to try more of theirs!

I love Belgium style of ales. I also love bourbon barrel aging. This is an excellent example of both. Full taste that feels good in your mouth and looks good. Good head that stays well without being excessive. I was pleasantly surprised to find a brew from a brewing company I hadn't heard of or tried that was this good. I will definitely be looking for more!

Poured from the bottle into a curved wheat ale glass, because we can.

A coffee to light tan creamy head, two fingers and with some good staying power and no lacing. Settles to a half finger puck nicely and good thick collar. Body is a nice mahogany brown, thick looking with great red hues looking toward the bottom.

Fantastic nose. Hints of warm malted candy chocolate, nutty hazelnut like aromas and thick slightly boozy toffee caramel. Thick oak qualities. Slight spicy quality almost herbal as well, like a sharp tea or grass, with some mixing clove. Real nice and impressive.

Palate is real impressive. A great light feel, with a good amount of barrel aged oomph and power. Thick toffee, with spicy notes continuing on the finish, almost peppery and black. Very light quality to this almost a crisp sense of Crispy Crunch chocolate candy bar, mixed in with a nutty nougat softness. Great caramel and nut quality, as time comes there's even an almost Belgian dark raisin character to this. The mouthfeel is more unique, distinct, and impressive, as opposed to perfect, but it is stunning in it's light feel but malt thickness in contradiction.

I really wasn't sure how this would come out for a barrel aged whiskey weizenbock, but it's lightness and thick quality is astounding, with the flavors melding, and tasting unlike anything I have ever had even in this style. An extremely impressive brew.
