The thin head quickly dissipates in a Left Hand pint glass, leaving only the clear, rich, dark-amber, almost dull, copper-penny beer waiting for my taste buds.

Aroma begins with oats and light espresso with a touch of lime and soap followed by a more distinctive beef broth.

Begins lightly sweet with a mild bitter finish. This one is more yeasty than peppery with perhaps some smoked oak in the background.

Rorbach's version is medium-bodied, almost creamy with soft carbonation and no sense of alcohol.

A fine component of any meal and clearly meets my expectations for this style.

On tap at the brewpub today.Came in a standard pint glass a clear bronze with a thinner white head atop, thin aromas mainly of toasty bread dough.A dryer more crisp tasting Fest lager wich I like, crisp well baked pizza dough with just light caramel sweetness, not much hop presence to be had.A better than average O-fest but not great.

A preview, thank you brewmaster Jim McDermott. Had in its early chewy yeasty fresh cloudy unfiltered intense taste state, off the hopper. Some natural carbonation and no unusual dryness or sweetness and that's fine. Best so far, with John and Murtyman enjoying along. Good beverage.

Appearance: Small foamy head but left nice lacing on the glass. Deep orangy brown in color.

Smell: Sweet toasted malt.

Taste: Toasted malt with a subtle sweetness. Mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel. Crisp and creamy.

Drinkability: Better batch than previous year.Great drinking beer. Goes great with hearty foods.

It looks like the Marzen is back on tap at the Rohrbach brewpub, so I grabbed a growler while I was there.

The color is a wonderful clear copper with a fairly good white head. The nose was that of sweet malt. The taste is very malt-forward, almost on the brink of being cloying, although it doesn't go over the edge. There is a little bit of malty aftertaste that lingers. Frsh and easy drinking, although the residual maltiness does detract from its drinkability.

Sampled at Buffalo Brewfestival, 2004.

Eye Candy: More on the reddish side of brown. Pretty in the sunlight. Thin fizzy head. I looked forward to trying this one based on its looks.

The Nose Knows: Lager-like.

Tongueland: This was thin. Very thin. No m/f. The rich malt front and toasted finish that I have come to expect were missing. Oktoberfest tasted like a nicely brewed lager, thats it. On a plus, Oktoberfest was very clean. Nothing memorable.

Bender Factor: I didn't even finish my sample. I was very dissapointed. Maybe I am spoiled by Flying Bison's Oktoberfest. Rohrbach missed the mark on this one.

Clear chestnut color, creamy off-white/tan head. Very pretty brew. The aroma primarily consists of fresh pumpernickel bread with caramel and medium toasted grains. Hops are most likely a traditional Noble German variety and lend a spicy character to the nose. The flavor is a blend of the aromas but seems to swirl around the mouth with an ever changing taste profile. Malty and smooth to start, peppery/spicy middle, well calculated hop bitterness to finish. Probably a touch hoppier than most O'fests this year but it's welcome and noninvasive here. This isn't some hopped up, over the top O'fest. It's very much a traditional one. A fine, fine brew indeed. Nice job Jim! Bonus - $5.00 Mass (liter) mugs! Hell yeah! Rohrbach's also offers, in addition to its usual lineup of German menu selections, an expended Oktoberfest menu. Give it a try.

From notes.

This beer poured a nice deep maple with a white head. Quite clear. From the aroma I gathered a nicely malt-forward caramel, a very slight bit of butterscotch, and ever so tiny wafts of earthy hops. Taste is very similar to the aroma, but with a sweet finish and a bitter aftertaste. A medium bodied beer with velvety carbonation. Not bad at all, but as with many of Rohrbach's beers, there's nothing outstanding about it.

Pours a copper color with a slight haze and a thin head that fades quickly to a ring. The aroma is predominately sweet, caramel malt but with a definite funk mixed in. Hard to describe it exactly, they best I can come up with is cooked vegetables. The taste is sweet malt, but with a lot of carbonation which makes it a bit more lively. Some bitterness on the back end, which hangs around for the finish. Body is medium. A decent beer, but not the best Oktoberfest I've had.

Presented to me by a server in a busy restaurant, so needless to say the head wasn't all that it should be, but there was still a nice thin cap on it. Deep amber brown color is pretty inviting. Moderate lacing. Smell and taste were predominantly of sweet toasted caramel malt. A good balancing hop character fades in and out. Smooth, creamy and quite drinkable. I had two, but could have easily kept going. Marzen generally isn't one of my favorite styles, but this one was nice.

perhaps the best straightforward Oktoberfest type ive had this fall, on tap at the Elmwood in Rochester, ny. more body and depth to this than so many, even the authentic german versions, I like this better. its bronzed in color, not clear but not cloudy either, with an inch of well settled white head, looking charming and tempting in a chilly pint glass in front of a plate of wings. complex grain bill, or seemingly, with notes of dark bread and spice packed into the usual marzen type framework. balancing bittering hops, clean finish on this too. what sets it apart, for me at least, is the feel. its got a ton of body for the style, which makes it more applicable to cold weather sessioning. its also really well carbonated, which gives it a lot of life. super fresh and well built, I will need to have some more stuff from rohrbach on my next trip to Rochester. a very lovely seasonal here, easy drinking but big enough to handle chicken wings. perfect match.

I had this in a sampler at Rohrbachs today, and I have to say I came in with low expectations as I generally dislike Oktoberfest style beers. I was very pleasantly surprised, and thought that it was not only quite drinkable, but very good. I have probably had 10-15 Oktoberfest styles in the last year, this was by far the best.

this beer poured a nice dark gold with an off white head that faded to lacing but didn't want to go away. the aroma off course contains a lot of sweet malt lager notes, but there's a bit of fruit in there as well on this beer. the taste follows through with a good roasted malt and once again that bit of fruit, combined with the full body and good co2 this is a pretty drinkable beer.

Rohrbach Octoberfest is a dense amber lager with a white, leathery film of a head. It has a sweet aroma, like brown sugar, along with a grassy, floral note of Willamette hops. It is medium bodied and smooth with a light, delicate finish. It is lightly sweet, resiny and wooden. It's very fresh tasting and enjoyable. I had a second pint of this one.
