this beer pours and amber brown color with red highlights and a thin off white head. the light roasted malt aroma is a bit understated but the taste makes up for it with lots of sweet malt and maybe just a touch of hops in that sweet finish. it had a medium body with good carbonation, it might have been a bit on the cold side but the lack of aroma kind of killed this beer for me.

Reddish tinge, malted, some carmel, some hops with somewhat bitter finish. Slightly better than average beer. I could have a couple pints but glad I saved room. Proably good with bar food. Sampling with John, Murtyman, and Jim McDermott the brewmaster.

Had in a 22 oz. draft at Red Lobster on Jefferson Road:

A-Decent, ruby, little or no head

S-average, nothing too outstanding, smells lagerish

T-uh oh, nothing really very good here, it seems almost flat with little going on

M-again, maybe the keg was old, bad whatever, but not good

O-hoping for better, especially given the other options, but actually sent this back and got it comped by the manager...

This is a very difficult beer for me to review because I feel I have had it at least 8 different ways. By far the most inconsistant offering from my beloved Rohrbachs (maybe with the exception of rushed batches of scotch ale to meet demand). Not a bad beer but generally over rated by a lot of drinkers you talk to at the bar and at red wings games. I have had 4.0 red wing red and I have had 2.0 red wing red so give it a try and maybe even come back for a second one to see how it pans out.

Appearance- A little bit red but thought it was more of a brown color.

Smell- It has a sweet aroma that I can't quite explain what it is but it is sweet.

Taste- This is a beer that is not very bitter at all which can be good or bad I guess depending on how you like your beers. Overall there is not much flavor to this beer.

Mouthfeel- Light body the color may fool you.

Drinkability- Not bad. It is an average beer.

This beer was a decent show, but I expected quite a lot more flavor -- be it hop or malt. At the stadium in Rochester, it was a great escape from the Genny and Budweiser, but packed less wallop than I would have expected from a proclaimed microbrew. I'd like to see this brewer do more to get into ballparks...but I'd like to see them also get up the %, malt and hop. as the only game in Rochester, it could do better, be damned with the bottom line for now.

they make text-book pretty beers...clear, even head. Nice colors/ shades. Open the extra bag of grain.

The beer pours a dark amber red color with a 1/2" offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry, caramel malt scent with just a hint of hops in the nose. The taste is decent. It has a bone dry crystal malt flavor that's crisp and easy drinking with a bit of hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a low/medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is an above average red ale. I like the caramel malt character, but it way too dry for me. The yeast attenuation must be near 100%.

This beer seems to have a lot of fluctuation from growler to growler. Sampled 3 growlers and each had a little different character. All growlers produced above average red ales.

Appearance: A tinge of characteristic red, not as deep as other of the category

Smell: Slightly earthy, the sweet malts rise to greet ones nose while the hops pull through for a bitter nuance

Taste: All growlers, while slightly varied in carbonation and character, gave fine drinking beer. A very smooth beer with a clean after taste.

Mouth feel: Thick bodied for a red ale.

Drinkability: An overall fine red ale that has won my heart

Named and brewed for the local AAA baseball team, the Rochester Red Wings (Orioles affiliate). It's available at home games at Frontier Field and also can be had at the brewpub. A solid red ale, though the catagory can be rather uninspiring, this one's as good as they come. Well balanced and finishes with a surprising hop bite. Perfect brew for a ball game.

I have had this in both a growler and from a nitro-tap, which I was able to enjoy at a college graduation celebration. As far as the growler is concerned, it is a solid beer, but as is with most ales, it's better to enjoy them on tap.
Anyways, I was impressed by the taste of the mildly bitter ale, which prides itself of course, on being served at Red Wings games.

It does not impress much by its looks or smell, which in my own opinion, is quite tame and what you'd expect from an average amber, but you will be pleasantly surprised by its smooth drinkability and solid amber taste. There is nothing watery or weak about the Red Wing Ale, and while drinking it with a few friends, you can't help but feel a little content about drinking a good hometown originated product associated with the local AAA minor league team.
