I tried this yesterday at the Bergkirchweih in Erlangen in both the one liter and half liter sizes. I really thought that this beer would quench my thirst on a hot day and taste great on tap, but both of those expectations were quickly dashed. It pours a golden body that is closer to a yellowish brown with a head that quickly evaporated in my Krug. It smells very skunky and tastes rather metallic, but it does go down rather smooth, which is why I rated it a little higher on the drinkability scale. Compared to the beers that I have tried at other "Kerwa" or "Kirchweih" fests, this ranks near the bottom.

Its clear golden body is topped by a short head of creamy white foam that holds extremely well and leaves thin rings of lace throughout the entire glass. Sweet, rich malt greets you in the nose; accented by a light touch of floral hops. Its medium body and very fine, moderate carbonation leaves it gently tingly in the mouth with just enough zest to accentuate its flavors but not grate on the tastebuds. The flavor displays a semi-rich, lightly toasty malt with a cusp of caramelized sugars that gives it a unique character. It's well-balanced by a firm bitterness; and tempered by a very low-level floral and spicy hop flavor. It finishes dry with a mild, short lingering note of malt. Quite drinkable! This is a great, straightforward lager that delivers a solid maltiness that's well-balanced by bitterness and hop flavor but, in the end, leaves the malt in the limelight. Quite satisfying all around!

This beer has an amazing champagne look. It has a crystal clear brass body with damn near perfect white head and lace. The aroma is grassy and grainy. The flavor is very complex. There are bread tones, fruitiness and an odd buttery roasted flavor. In the end there is of a bit of medicine like aftertaste. The body has a carbonation bite and some slickness. I really enjoyed this beer.

Echtes Erlanger Bergkirchweihbeir. I think this is the beer they brew for the big church mountain beer festival (sidenote: it's barely a hill). Poured a bright cream colored head that left some solid lace. The beer itself is golden colored and transparent. Aroma is pungeant, bordering on skunky, with a bit of biscuit malt (I don't think they use it, but that's what it smells like). Flavor is just barely sweet up front and with a light but solid bready/biscuit-malt flavor all the way through. There is a also a bit of a corny flavor. Best before 1/5/07 so I'm assuming that it's fresh. It has some characteristics of the Kitzmann Zwickel I had the other day that I didn´t love. This one is not my cup of brew.
