A: Usually nothing special, but they do gigs over march madness and stuff like that, have a tv playing the game and stuff, some elaborate sales scheme, assigning a drink to a team, kinda cool I guess.

S: the only place I've been recognized and not carded more than once, that's nice, and it's several of the clerks that recognize me.

S: Not really a beer nut's wet dream. They carry you're surly's (smoke) and such, but not much for exotic beers, great wine and liquor selection though. :-P

V: This is what keeps me coming back, great prices on certain sales, but be careful, sometimes they'll have a bright neon green sign that says SALE!! This Jack Daniels $17.99, and then by flipping up that sign, you reveal, normal price $17.99.
All December they had 12 packs of all types of Sierra Nevada for $10.99

Located in a strip mall, Big Top has a relatively small beer section. The focus here seems to be wine. The majority of beer available is in the back of the store and along the back wall. There are a few selections available in the large beer cooler, but it's mostly BMC. You will find some decent imports including some solid Belgian selections. Good selections of more local beers like Schell's, Summit, Rush River, etc. Some other crafts like Rogue and Point, but nothing really special or out of the ordinary. I have never spoken to an employee here. Never been approached once to see if I needed anything. Prices seemed to be average. A store that you can find something, but I wonder how their turnover is.

Typical warehouse-style liquor store. Lots of wine, a pretty extensive selection of liquors, and a lot of space devoted to macro beers. As far as micro and craft beer selection goes, this Big Top location has many of the larger national crafts (Sam Adams, SN, Redhook, etc.) in twelvers, warm and chilled, and a handful of smaller regional and other crafts. Imports looked to be the typicals.

As for price, this place has sales that are almost unmatched on twelve packs of the bigger craft brewers (and not all because they're expired or close to it). On the other hand, the sixers of smaller craft beers they had seemed largely overpriced, relative to some of the other beer stores within a 10-minute drive.

Overall, a good place to pick up run-of-the-mill twelve packs and BMC beers, but not a destination for craft beer sixers or singles.

I finally made it to this place and found it to be mediocre. The selection is sparse and the shelves were half empty. They were however priced very nicely and had some great sales on some cool beers. The walk in beer cooler has nothing worth while really most of the micros our outside the room on shelves. There are a lot of great stops for beer in the suburbs area and this is definatly not one of them. While they do have some nice brews and good prices they offer nothing you cant get else where. If your in the area give it a shot otherwise goto The Cellars or Blue Max or even The Apple Valley Liquor Store.

Even though this is part of a chain, the Big Top is bigger and friendlier then the MGM chain. I was surprised to find good help at this store. I asked what other Bell's beers they might have besides what was out on the floor and the main fella working went in back and wrote down everything they had for me. I found that to be very cool, though they didn't have any more of the Java Stout then the 2 sixers they had, I was dumbfounded that he did that. The layout of the store is nearly the same as the one in St. Paul that I visit frequently. So it was easy to find everything. Selection is nearly the same as the St. Paul store, seemed to have a bit less in the coolers and had shorter shelves. Stocked well with lots of local Summit & Schells, good import section thats a bit average but well stocked with Samuel Smiths and Young's. A few Belgians, a fair selection of micro, with well stocked Bell's, Big Sky, and a few others. Really nothing I couldn't find anywhere else I usually go, but well stocked and clean. I'd stop in if in the area for stocking up on good drinkers.

I came upon this store because it was close to where I work. It's not a great store, but it has some good features. Selection isn't great, but better than average with a mix of breweries and imports, including some Belgians.
But what I like is that they are not afraid to put something on sale, which can lead to some good deals. Over the past sereval months they've had "Beer of the Month" which has featured a beer, or even better, a brewery, at good prices. For example, Schells or Sam Adams at $4.99/6-pack or $18.99/case. This is a good way to get decent session beers, or just tasty beer. Most staff have no particular beer knowledge, but they are polite. The store has wide isles. It also has a large walk-in cooler for cold beer.
It's a worthwhile stop as I make my rounds.
