Mort Subite translates to Sudden or Instant Death. Yep, that pretty well describes this muddled mess. There seem to be too many ingredients. Very sweet but bland in the fruit department. Taste needs more cherries. Smell is pretty good though, fruity with a mixture of berries and medicinal sweet cherries. Thick frothy pink head looks good. Very pink, impressively pink.

Looks like carbonated cherry NyQuil in the glass. Cherry soda dominates the aroma and flavor. Pretty sweet without much redeeming tartness. Has a dirty aftertaste, doesn't finish clean. Bleh, not a very good example of the style, even for a sweeter style lambic. Xtreme? Sorry.

Been meaning to try this one for ages - finally picked up a bottle at the LCBO.

Pours a wonderful ruby-copper hue, leaves an inch thick of foamy head. Terrific lacing; a wonderful-looking brew!

The smell is mostly cherry, with some apple-cranberry sourness, biscuits and wine.

The taste is exceptional - sweet fresh cherries at the front, puckery sourness at the finish. The finish is nice and dry. Fully expected a sweet lambic and was pleasantly surprised. However, I agree with a previous poster in that it's not a flavour I can drink for too long.

Mouthfeel is juicy and tart, lightly carbonated.

Not a beer I will pick up too often, but certainly one well worth trying. My favourite lambic thus far!

On tap at Chez Leon.

A-Ruby red color, clear. A finger of rocky white head.

S-Sweet cherries dominate.

T-This one is skewed towards being sweet rather than sour. Cherries are evident and pleasant.

M-Nice body-not as thin as some lambics. Quick dry finish.

D-Very high.

O-This is a drinkable lambic with strong cherry flavor which skews towards being more sweet than sour but not overly sweet to the point of tasting artificial.

375mL corked bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pinkish red color with a white head. Leaves really nice lacing. Sweet fruity aroma with cherries. The taste is mostly cherries with a nice balance between sweet and sourness. Good mouthfeel with a light dry finish. I'm not a big fan of this style, but this is a nice lambic.

Sweet cherry flavour, with perhaps a bit of late sourness and tartness. Pretty light and refreshing, which makes it good to drink in summer, however it is perhaps a bit too sweet for me.

375ml caged and corked mini champagne style bottle.

Popping the cork, this beer pours a clear, orange and pink tinted copper hue, with several fingers of puffy, foamy, and silken pale pink head, which leaves some random soap film lacing around the glass as it gently recedes.

It smells of sweet and sour cherry juice, raspberry fruit wine, and a mild grainy, somewhat caramelized malt. The taste is cherry/raspberry pie, one with a middling acidic tartness, which borders freakishly on my own mom's raspberry cream pie.

The carbonation is moderate, just a few aspiring frothy bubbles, the body a decent medium weight, and actually quite smooth, with a wee twinge of creaminess. It finishes off-dry and still rather fruity, some pie crust malt and a sour cherry candy essence lingering.

A pleasantly tasty, refreshing, and drinkable cherry lambic (if not a particularly complex one), the only danger being that one might get a bit tired of that particular fruit flavour, as with any fruit beverage. However, there's enough going on here to obviate that concern, at least until the end of this bottle.

Deep red in colour, topped generously with off-white (or barely pink) head. Tart cherry aroma is simple but very pleasant. While this has been sweetened, it's not a syrupy mess of a beer. It is still predominately tart, but not puckeringly so. It tastes of sour cherries with a light tannic note. The mouthfeel is light and refreshing. This would work well as a simple thirst quencher during the summertime. I was worried this would be a cloying mess like the Chapeau sweetened fruit lambics, but this is actually decent.

On tap at A La Mort Subite. Brussels, Belgium. Notes from April 2011.

A: Bright red color with a thin pink head of foam.

S: Intense cherry flavor, but not too sugary sweet. What sweetness that is present in the kriek is balanced well by the mild acidity.

T: Almost tastes like a cherry wine cooler, but not in a bad way. A great deal of cherry flavor with sweetness and light acidity.

M: Medium body with heavy carbonation.

O: Definitely a guilty pleasure beer that I'd swipe from my wife when she's not looking.

LCBO in a moment of inspiration, albeit it gay inspiration. Pink froth with some fruity esthers. Medium bodied, though I am glad I shared this as drinkable, a little. Finishes sweet, that cherry sticky syrup, not too sweet, dtill retaining a sour edge.

Besides the pink tinted head, consisting of fairly large bubbles, this looks like a soft-drink. A very pale red, like a raspberry ginger ale or something like that. Loads of carbonation. Spotty lacings.

Cherry (shocking, I know) on the nose. Sweet overall but that medicinal character that has been mentioned is certainly there, like a throat losange. Cream soda from the sugar.

Good hit of fizzy carbonation hides the first taste. Sweet cherries, not overly sour. A little bit of powdery yeast, but not funky or anything. Some of the corn comes through in the finish, although it isn't unpleasant and combines with that cream soda flavour.

When I first went to Brussels, I got completely lost. I ended up out in the industrial wasteland and wandered for hours. When i finally found the Grand Place, the Mort Subite Kriek was what the waiter recommended. This was my first Belgian beer (and first beer other than macro lagers) and it turned me onto the right path. I know now this isn't the best of its kind, but on that day it was the greatest thing I had ever tasted. I'm glad the LCBO picked it up.

A: Semi dark with micro carbonation and a quickly disappating 3" soda float head.
S: Sweet and sour cherry. Pretty artificial, but very candy like. Cherry ice cream.
T: Pretty much a cherry soda with a bit of tang, a sourness. Grenadine syrup. Nice but not really beer.
M: I do like the tangy-ness from the sour flavor. creates a nice mouth feel, but otherwise it's fairly light, slightly syrupy.
O: Not very beer like but tasty in its own way.
