This place is by the far the best in the area. Not only do they have the best craft beer selection, but there prices are pretty low too. Surly Furious for $8.99, and Bender for $7.99 (both are on sale) are good examples. They usually always have some type of craft beer on sale too. The staff is awesome and will put limited or seasonals on hold for you. Thanks to them I have a bottle of CBS sitting in my cellar! Every time I am in the area I stop because there is always something good to grab. Seek this place out if you are in the North Metro, and tell them Josh sent ya.

I was not expecting to find a place like this in the far northwestern suburbs of the Twin Cities. I love little gems like this place. A very good selection from a very wide range of micros and imports. Lots of beers with some age on them as well as some hard to find limiteds that have been long extinct closer to the city. You need to be careful with beers that need/should be consumed fresh, as it seems like there inventory doesn't exactly cycle fast.
If you are willing to spend sometime doing some digging, your effort will be rewarded.
When ever I'm in the area, I'm going to make a point of stopping buy to comb the shelves to see what I've missed on previous trips.

Rum River is one of my go-to stores when I'm in the NW suburbs because they have a good selection and seem to hold onto more sought after bottles longer than the popular stores in the Twin Cities. The prices are a little higher than my normal stores but decent for the area and the service is solid.
The only issue I have with Rum River Wine & Spirits is the lack of inventory turnover. It is common to find beers that are well past their best-by date, but I guess the store is stuck if the demand isn't there.
All-in-all, a very good beer store in an area where there isn't much else to offer to the craft beer scene.

Rum River Wine and Spirits has a pretty good beer selection. They carry mostly American craft beers, but they do have a small selection of Belgian and German beers. The beer is basically thrown out of the floor of the back corner of the store. They must have ran out of shelves as the space the beer is in is large enough that they could have put shelves there. For the beer being on the floor it is actually quite organized. However, if it were on shelves they could easily carry a lot more beers. I did see a number of winter seasonals which wouldn't be so bad if they had been marked down, but they weren't. Service was good. I was greeted when walked in the door, and someone approached me quickly to ask if I needed any help finding a certain beer. Prices were slightly higher than elsewhere in the metro, but not outrageous. Overall, this place doesn't have the greatest selection in the state, but it doesn't have a very good selection for the area.

I found this place about 1 1/2 years ago and like to go there from time to time. The back right corner of the store is where they keep their craft brews. A nice selection, and a store which too many B.A.'s probably do not know about.
The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, they are more than willing to help you look for what you want. I can't begin to count how many beers Rick has either ordered for me, or held for me to pick up. If you are up in the Anoka-Ramsey area, I recommend that you stop in and look around.
Edited on 3/18/2010 to reflect the great quality, selection, and service at this store.

I went here in November 07 to get some Surly to bring back to San Diego, and see what else they had from the Midwest. I spent a long time looking thru their corner of beers. The beers weren't all organized, so it kind of made it feel like treasure hunting. Found a few worthwhile beers from Bells, and some Flying Dog BA beers. After digging thru all the cases I was still short Surly. I found out they keep them in a cooler near the front of the store. I was dissappointed to find out they had a 2 or 3 4-pack limit after driving 2000 miles.
This is probably the best place to buy beer in the Northern suburbs that I've found during my visits home.

RRWS is only 2 ½ miles from my house so it is my local stop for anything alcoholic. Its small and the building is a bit older, but for what the northern TC metro has to offer for craft beer, this place is a gold mine. When you enter, walk all the way to the back right hand corner of the store. There you will find coolers with a nice selection of American/Canadian crafts and European crafts (and some European macros). The wall shelving in the right hand corner displays an eclectic selection of Belgians and some harder to find European/Canadian brews. There are also a few free standing shelving units with some of the harder to find American crafts as well.
The service is outstanding. Rick and his staff are always friendly and quick to point out what is new in the past week and offer suggestions. They also give you their honest opinion about beers they have tried, instead of saying thats good and oh, I like that to everything they have.
Its not as big and doesnt have the selection that Cellars or Blue Max does in the TC. But if you are in northern, MN, this shop is well worth a visit.

To really understand how good this place is, you must compare it to what else is out here in East Central Minnesota. Every town has its own little muni. Most of them are BMC heaven, a very few craft brews from Summit or Schell, maybe the occasional "exotic" craft brew that sells out and then never gets ordered again. Wine coolers and scratch off tickets are the biggest sellers, usually. So, only a short drive from Lake Wobegon - half the distance of driving to Minneapolis - is this oasis. Tucked away in a half-residential, half- commercial area. Wonderful selection of craft brews and imports. Some genuinely hard to find stuff. Very reasonable prices. Very knowledgable and accommodating staff. Well worth the drive, and every bit the equal of any world-class beer store in Minneapolis or St. Paul. Again, you have to view everything in context, but this one sure takes the prize up here in East Central Minnesota. Highly recommended.

Been here a couple times. They don't have a ton of stuff, but they do have more then most liquor stores by where I live. They have all your Unibroue products, Ommegang, a few different Dogfish Head
brews, Anchor, some other Belgians, and your other typical beers.
This first time I went there I got a really good price on all the Unibroue products; they were selling the 750s for around $3.99. I couldn't pass up that price even though I have had all of them before. The service was good, talked beer with one of the workers for awhile. Nothing outstanding, but a place where a guy can find a decent beer without having to drive to the Twin Cities.
