A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Nov 2012.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A very dark brown colour; appears black. Forms a decent head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding. Aroma is dominated by vanilla and butterscotch, with notes of chocolate, nuts, roasted malt, faint coffee and stewed hops.

Tastes of roasted malt with a cloying vanilla sweetness and a dry, bitter finish. Notes of vanilla, butterscotch, chocolate, dried fruit, coffee and stewed hops. A dry, astringent bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but watery. Dries the palate thoroughly. Aftertaste of roasted malt and sweet vanilla.

Interesting idea, but poor execution. The components are there just as the name suggests, but they don't rub along well together. In particular, the vanilla aroma/flavour is intense, cloying and seems artificial - not nice. Chocolate notes lurk in the background. A vague hint of diacetyl butteriness wafts around. The roasted malt is solid, but overwhelmed. Finally, the body is far too thin for a decent stout - it wants to be thick and velvety. Oh well. Give it a miss.

500ml clear bottle poured into a Young's pint pot.

A. Very dark brown coloured beer with a brown, smooth head.

S. Strong nuances of cocoa powder and vanilla pods.

T. Chocolate fudge cake dusted with cocoa powder, vanilla creaminess. A slight smokiness joins in the blend.

M. Medium bodied.

D. I honestly did not think that any chocolate beer could be as good as Young's Double Chocolate Stout or Meantime Chocolate but this is on the same level if not better!! A brilliant stout.
