Ummm, I am a bit surprised that the Pig`s Eye Pub is listed here as a "beer bar" on beeradvocate.
It is located right above a restaurant with a southern theme from the same owners I believe, Black Eyed Sally`s, so walk the stairs.
The clientele is a mix of 50% college kids and 50% blue collar gents 35-65 years old. The service that I experienced was a little above average for a typical bar. Which is what the selection is, mostly macro, a couple micros, I believe they had something from Hooker as well as something from Burnside. It is nice that they are supporting Hartford County brewers, but aside from those, everything else seemed to be BMC.
Good prices, decent scene, convenient to the XL center, but not a place to seek for a variety of craft beers.

The beer is OK for a Hartford bar. Two pool tables, a deck with a heat lamp. Dark dingy, and peanuts all over the floor when you walk in. A couple popular craft beers on tap: Magic Hat #9, Sam Boston and Seasonal, a Hooker offering. They do have crap on tap. Do not go here searching for a craft brew you haven't tried or for a quiet night with good food. They'll have pizza for happy hour and the place gets pretty filled up at night. It's a pretty cheap place to go out with OK beer if you are trying to meet a girl.

There was a neon sign pointing upwards as I approached, so I knew to ascend the steps upon arrival.
The laminated, light wood bar was in half of an octagon shape just to the left of the entry. The Men's was to the immediate right of the bar and was missing its door. Uh oh. That always sets off flags in my mind. I overheard the manager telling someone that they had to move the band inside because of noise. I guess that is how I would summarize this place: a rock 'n' roll joint with decent (not great) beer. BA worthy? Probably not. Convenient to the bus? Yep. Would I come back? Maybe.

I have been here a number of times because there is no cover. They usually have decent beer specials and some local go know where band playing. The problem is if you go on the wrong night, i.e. the weekend, it is packed and everyone is sloshed. The positive is the owner is laid back and sometimes will let everyone have a few free shots. The waitress's are a tad slow so you are better off going to the bar for your beer. Not buy from the tap, buy bottles. It gets so packed if you buy draught beer you'll spill a good 1/3 or more going back to your table or place where your standing.

The Hartford bar scene is pretty weak, Located above Black Eyed Sally's. This place is always bumping on Friday nights because there's no cover. The place is packed. I'm not into that kind of thing.
I happened to walk in on a Monday night, different story, completely empty. Wide open bar, outside deck area, 3 or 4 pool tables, a bunch of tv's broadcasting a fight, and most importantly $2.00 drafts. They had a pretty good tap list too. Harpoon IPA & UFO, Longtrail, Sam, Sam seasonal, Ten Penny, Magic Hat, Stella, Newcastle, Big3, and a couple others. I was just happy to find some decent beer at an unbelievable price.
My only complaint is that they play the music way too loud even on a weeknight, I could hardly have a conversation with my buddies. I don't think that I'll be a regular at this place. I do go it'll be on a Monday.

Off the beaten track in downtown Hartford. Easy to miss, since it's upstairs above Black Eyed Sally's, but after you head upstairs into the bar, you enter a cavernous space with many pool tables, a patio area, and a bar area at the far end near the entrance. The bar area is small compared to the rest of the place. The service is always good, and there are bowls of salty peanuts in the shell to keep you thirsty all night. The selection is decent, but you won't find anything out of the ordinary. There are taps for nasty macros mixed in with several good micros. They seem to always have Olde Burnside on tap. Very cool that they support the guy across the river. Not a lot of micros, but enough to keep you happy for an hour or two. The crowd is mixed, but tends toward younger, but there's never an attitude from the patrons or the staff. Music gets just a little too loud at times, or else I'm just a little too old.
