From: John's Grocery, Iowa City, IA
Date: Code Number: L1048058L00
Glass: Ayinger willi glass

Einbecker's schwarzbier is a modestly flavored, easy-drinking dark beer with light roast and toffee flavors. A definitely sessionable beer, but one I would not go to too much trouble to look for one when others that are tastier are more readily available.

Pours a 1.5cm head of very light tan, composed of large to medium-sized bubbles that recedes to a thick ring around the glass, with a few small islands of wispy foam. Lacing along the sides of the glass is fairly minimal, a few dots and squiggles. Body is a dark brown color with reddish highlights, light bringing out a dark amber hue to the beer. Carbonation is visible, but sluggish.

Aroma is of lightly roasted malt with a bit of toffee. The scent composition is fairly minimal, decent, but not particularly strong or nuanced.

Overall flavor profile of light roasted malt and toffee, sweeter rather than roastier, and generally subtle and mild. Tasting opens with malt sweetness and lightly roasted malt favors, leading into a mid-palate of lightly roasted malt with toffee and slight European hop bitterness. Back of palate sees an increase in roasted malt flavor and acridity, with a bit of chocolate and toffee as well. Lingering aftertaste of caramel malt sweetness with some roasted malt and toffee flavor.

Beer is medium bodied with low to medium-low levels of carbonation. Resulting mouthfeel is smooth, not creamy or fizzy. Closes out dry, with little stickiness across the palate.

(bottle code: L1039042L 11 - poured into a pilsner glass)

A: burgundy in color - not nearly at all black - very clear liquid... fizzy foam that settles into a thin island of suds

S: cola, root (beer), roasty malts and toasted aromas via decoction... dark fruits - prune, dried cherry - fairly bold, perhaps the intensity and character of which stems from oxidation? still smells appealing... a dry, moderately toasty bread crust... nothing hop-like

T: root, molasses... fair amount of lightly bittersweet of dark chocolate, bits of coffee grounds... overall taste falls in between a Dunkel and Schwarzbier, leaning toward the latter, lacking perhaps the dirtier depth of malt in the former... quite pleasant rounded bitterness in the finish, lingering through into the aftertaste

M: smooth and quite clean with a slightly silky slickness... little-to-no play from carbonation... overall, perhaps a touch thin for my taste

O: this bottle may very well have been a bit old, but the beer was still quite drinkable... downed it relatively swiftly... would love to try this fresher or on tap

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

It's been years since I've had something from Einbecker, so I'm interested to see how my feelings have evolved. This stuff pours a clear smoky topaz topped by a finger of charred cream foam. The nose comprises mild roast, light toast, and a touch of cashew. The taste intensifies the roast a bit and replaces the cashew with a bit of rubber. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, an odd little schwarz, really. The rubber character is pretty off-putting, but the rest seems to finish rather cleanly. I have no idea how old this bottle isw, so perhaps age has had an effect, but it seems fresh enough, just lackluster.

Tawny color with brown hues. Light tan head with moderate density and medium+ retention.

Light roasted coffee and toffee notes. Moderate malt richness with a subtle lactic note.

The roasted flavor deepens on the palate. Slightly smoky with a moderate bitterness that is well integrated with the malt. Medium length with caramelized notes that linger on the finish.

Medium- body that is slightly watery in texture.

Nice beer for the style.
