355 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before July 13 2014 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy golden-blonde colour, topped with one half-finger of frothy, relatively short-lived white head. It soon settles into a soapy collar with a few scattered strands of lacing left stuck to the glass. The aroma is very citrus-heavy, with notes of pink grapefruit, orange and lemon figuring in strongly, in addition to tropical fruits and peach. Not much malt presence on the nose.

Thankfully, that is not the case as far as flavour goes - there is a mild pale malt & caramel sweetness that stands briefly as a bulwark against the tide of citrusy, tropical fruit hop notes that dominate the tail end of the profile. Grapefruit is still a big one, with mango, pineapple and orange also contributing. Bitter, dry finish with a touch of lemony pith; quite noticeable but not lingering on the palate long. Light-bodied, with appropriately spritzy carbonation for a light, hoppy pale ale. They aren't kidding when they call this sessionable - in fact I'd say it's probably the most sessionable thing in the brewery's entire portfolio.

Final Grade: 3.95, a solid B+. Muskoka Detour is a high-quality light pale ale and it is likely to provide some stiff competition for Naughty Neighbour, which is the only other product in this market I can really think of that fills a comparable niche. Detour's light, sessionable nature makes the six-pack a natural format choice, but I hope to see this one canned at some point so I can drink it on the regular without committing to a half-dozen.

On the nose, I’m getting some grapefruit, watermelon, a bit of citrus, and maybe even a hint of bubble gum. On the palate some sweet fruits, and some of that grapefruit/watermelon combo. It’s all a tad light though. My thought is Muskoka is making this as a kinder, gentler, friendlier Mad Tom, as a sort of gateway beer to those who are curious about craft beers, but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge off the deep end. Very quaffable, but won’t replace the heavy hitter IPA’s in my fridge

Poured from bottle into stemmed glass, colour is a light golden, slightly cloudy, with a pretty solid white lacing and film.

S - a firm grapefruit citrus, rindy, with a firm bready maltiness, gooseberry, lemon, full of C hops and quite a firm hopiness. A hint of a sourness that might have come from bittering with Citra? Mostly this is grapefruit and florals.

T - Starts with grapefruit, juicy and tart, as more berry notes fill out, blueberry, currents, some slick tart bitterness to it. Underpinned by a mostly pale maltiness. Get some raspberry and lemons, full of citrus flavour and a floral overtone as well, you can feel more of the lightness in the body as the crispness fades out but the bitterness and hop profile work well in good balance to satisfy while refreshing.

M - A good tart bitter crispness to it, quite refreshing, towards the midpoint the malt starts to fall away as you get the indication of the lower abv, then you have a nice lingering sticky hop bitterness. As a session pale or IPA, this really satisfies on the flavour front while being light and sessionable. Carbonation is moderate and balanced.

Quite solid PA for sessioning, especially if you want something with a bit more of a C hop character. My only point against was the collapse of the malt profile and the hops could have been a bit more dynamic, but it works as a flavourful session for summer.
