355 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before July 13 2014 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy golden-blonde colour, topped with one half-finger of frothy, relatively short-lived white head. It soon settles into a soapy collar with a few scattered strands of lacing left stuck to the glass. The aroma is very citrus-heavy, with notes of pink grapefruit, orange and lemon figuring in strongly, in addition to tropical fruits and peach. Not much malt presence on the nose.

Thankfully, that is not the case as far as flavour goes - there is a mild pale malt & caramel sweetness that stands briefly as a bulwark against the tide of citrusy, tropical fruit hop notes that dominate the tail end of the profile. Grapefruit is still a big one, with mango, pineapple and orange also contributing. Bitter, dry finish with a touch of lemony pith; quite noticeable but not lingering on the palate long. Light-bodied, with appropriately spritzy carbonation for a light, hoppy pale ale. They aren't kidding when they call this sessionable - in fact I'd say it's probably the most sessionable thing in the brewery's entire portfolio.

Final Grade: 3.95, a solid B+. Muskoka Detour is a high-quality light pale ale and it is likely to provide some stiff competition for Naughty Neighbour, which is the only other product in this market I can really think of that fills a comparable niche. Detour's light, sessionable nature makes the six-pack a natural format choice, but I hope to see this one canned at some point so I can drink it on the regular without committing to a half-dozen.

355ml bottle. Following on Phillips' Bottle Rocket ISA, Muskoka has apparently created a sessionable IPA, at 4.3% ABV.

This beer pours a hazy, medium golden yellow hue, with one measly finger of weak, but still tightly foamy dirty white head, which leaves some random bubbling cauldron lace around the glass as things quickly sink away.

It smells of sweet orange, grapefruit, and pineapple flesh, a further muddled tropical fruitiness, subtle neutered pine needles, a somewhat thin bready caramel malt, lemon drops, and a barely dry leafy earthiness. The taste is an even more blended and mashed citrus/tropical fruitiness, a now rather noticeable dank pine character, crackery pale malt, a hint of caramel/toffee to add to the swelling sweetness quotient, soft hard water mineral notes, and a plain leafy, weedy bittering hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly light and innocuous, the body on the far lee side of medium weight, and generically smooth, a wee clamminess worming itself it in as the beer warms. It finishes off-dry, the fruitiness waning heavily, the dulled crackery malt holding fast, and the leafy, earthy hops thinking about appealing for a promotion.

If this is an APA, doesn't that just make APAs 'sessionable' IPAs? The brewery claims it to be an IPA, and I find that I agree with them - lots of well-rounded hoppiness, an understated malt backbone, just with the ABV of an English bitter. From what I remember, this turns out to be very similar in bearing to Bottle Rocket, in most respects - Phillips just did a better job of branding.

Had this beer at possibly it's freshest point. The hops were so aromatic they were jumping out of the glass. Exotic fruit aroma that I can't put my finger on. Drinks like one of the best pale ales I've had. Gorgeous hop structure, medium bodied. Nice and earthy as well.

Purchased at the LCBO as a single 355ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass.

A- Opens well but pours next to no head that is done in a few seconds. Nice gold color

S- Very good. Hops abound.

T- Ok. Light on the hops. I understand this is a low alcohol beer so that is why I scored this beer higher here than if it were a regular IPA

M- Pretty good. Light and bubbly

O- Pretty good but will not really buy again

Food Pairing

This nice light IPA went well with... coconut chicken curry

Enjoy!

A: Golden unfiltered with lots of white particles, 1 finger of white head, no carbonation.

S: Fruity with pine needles, canned peaches, canned pineapple, floral roses, onion.

T: Canned peaches, pineapple juice, a little spruce, little bitterness. Slight butter note.

M: Medium light body, little carbonation, dry finish.

O: A great dry beer. Drank in Uxbridge, bought in Markham, May 30, 2014.

12oz Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $2

Appearance - Slightly hazy gold colour with a large size fizzy white coloured head. There is a fair amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, hops, grapefruit, apricots

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts and caramel mixed with a good dose of hops. There is also some grapefruits and some apricots.

Overall - Seems a lot like the Nicklebrook Naughty Neighbour APA to me. Good stuff nonetheless, light-ish yet flavourful.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down moderately and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of citrus, grapefruit, faint pine, bready malts and some caramel.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a some citrus and grapefruit (very tropical), light grassy/piney bitterness, bready malts and sweet caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.
