Notes/Commercial Description:
Seasonally brewed and available in limited quantities, Muskoka Summer Weiss ("vice") is crafted with visions of summer in mind. Unfiltered and naturally hazy by design, the perfect balance of wheat, barley and subtle hopping makes this an intriguingly aromatic, flavourful and sessionable summer wheat beer. To release more flavour, agitate bottle slightly before opening. Cheers to you Summer!

Bottle poured into a weizen glass. A cloudy bright yellow color, almost banana peel-like with rampant quick-breaking white bubbles. Aroma is strong wheat malt, a bit rank and spicy with banana esters that manage to come across more like those foamy banana 5-cent candies than the legit article, generic nondescript citrus rind, and brown spice. Palate features more of the banana gummy flavor, clove, white bread, and citrus that evolves from lemon to orange. More sour and tangy that many weizens although the tell-tale flavors are present. Maybe I should rate the flavor a little higher but the heavy carbonation and watery body left me wanting. Finish is overly crisp and not enough of the yeast lingers. Certainly has some merit but usually Muskoka provides a more satisfying offering.

Served in weizen glass.

Look (3.5) - pours a golden-straw color (about 3-4*SRM). Clarity is a bit more than I'd expect from a Hefe. Head is good, rising to abolut two fingers and falling to a good, thick cap that really lasts. No real lacing. Good carbonation is visible.

Smell (4) - The nose is really good for the style. Some strong wheat graininess of the front. Both the banana and the clove yeast aromatics are present, leaning a bit more to the spiciness (which I really like).

Taste (3.5) - The flavor is good as well, but just a bit too light for my liking (very similar to Mein-Grunes from Schneider-Weiss). The balance has a lot more wheat flavor than on the nose. The yeast profile could have been a little stronger and lasted a bit more into the finish. Minimal hop profile.

Feel (4) - Lighter body with higher carbonation. The high carbonation dries out the finish a bit for me, which is good given that the wheat flavor lasts a bit longer.

Very, very drinkable, with a light flavor. A good example of the style, but I'm a bigger fan of a hefe with a stronger yeast profile on the palate.

Looks like Muskoka heard Ontarians cry out in frustration with the recent snow storm and decided to offer them a taste of summer a little early this year. 750mL swingtop bottle from the LCBO, sealed with an "Enjoy before August 1st, 2011" label.

Poured into a weizen glass. Dark tawny golden in colour, slightly opaque. Leaves a thick head which recedes quicky after a carbonation burnoff.

Nose is lovely - pale malts, light hoppage, banana, orange peel, bubblegum - the latter being especially noticeable. Smells like summer to me.

This is a sweet, slightly malty hefe (or pale wheat, it's hard to tell) that is incredibly tasty. I can see myself drinking this all summer. The usual hefe notes are subtle, but certainly pleasant.

Thicker for a hefe, carbonation is initially aggressive but settles down after a few moments, providing a late kick to the tongue with each sip.

I'll have to stand this one up to their regualar hefe to really figure out the differences between them. I think the malt character is more pronounced, and theres a bit of floral hops as well. Regardless, this is a very flavorful and enjoyable wheat beer, something I will certainly get more of when patio-drinking season begins. At just a hair over 5 bucks a bottle, this is quite reasonable. I really like what Muskoka has been doing with its seasonals, and this is certainly no exception. Pick a few up for the warm weather!

Appearance - beer pours a cloudy ale colour, very lively head. there is some good carbonation levels as well. the head is a white, light in volume and very active. lot of air pockets. there is some minimal lacing.

Smell - one of my favourite smells, banana! there is a good banana smell to this beer along with some orange hints. maybe there is a slight hint of citrus as well.

Taste - very smooth, amazing tasting beer. the bitterness is faint but present, there isnt much aftertaste. i can pick up the banana combined with a citrus hint.

Mouthfeel - some added carbonation, although not much. maintains a light feel and is very smooth.

Overall - I think this is one of muskoka's top beers, one of the best releases. I will buy more and keep on hand, look forward to many more beers from muskoka!

750ml bottle, part of a two-pack, readily available almost everywhere here in Alberta.

This beer pours a cloudy, very pale golden hue, with a tumultuous boil of thinly foamy, billowy white head, which settles at a snail's waiting room pace, eventually rendering some attractive chain mail fence lace around the glass.

It smells of grainy, semi-sweet toasted bready wheat malt, a touch of caramelized barley, sharp banana phenols, somewhat astringent earthy yeast, and some mild leafy, musty hops. The taste is sweet bready wheat malt up front and in your face, followed timidly by some banana loaf notes, restrained edgy yeast, and more nicely hovering leafy green hops.

The bubbles are a tad frothy, but generally even and supportive, the body an assured medium weight, for the style, of course, and actually rather smooth, with only a tiny snag from the yeast. It finishes off-dry, the various malts still running the show, with the attendant fruitiness, and a bit of lingering banana and clove esters.

A decent Weiss, I can agree on that - big and malty, but with just enough spice and yeast to keep things in a nice Canadian order, i.e., one where you would gladly step politely around someone to get another. Heady and flavourful patio beer, for lake country and beyond.

Unfiltered dirty yellow haze, and that is appealing. four inches of head. This is wheat, this is the style. Orange citrus, much bannana, some cloves, much funky yeast in the finish. Carbonation is right there and builds up, becoming harsh, slightly taking away from enjoyment and the mouthfeel is lighter that I would expect. Much spider lacing down the glass. Good until August 2011, this is a couple days into the LCBO and taste very fresh. Very drinkable, I surprisingly finished most of the bomber. Overall, a good one not to be missed.

Beer comes in a 750ml swingtop bottle, perfect size to share, or just enjoy by one's self. Beer appears with a frothy white head, bubbling with a hazy straw colour. Smell is of banana, wheat malt and yeast. Taste is spicy, refereshing and citrusy, hints of clove. Mouthfeel is light, frothy and dry. Overall, this is quite the weiss coming out of Ontario, a great local brew for the summer.

A - very cloudy straw golden, tall soapy white head dissipated slowly and unevenly leaving considerable random lacing
S - strong sour citrus, coriander, and bready grainy malt
T - similar to the nose but with the grainy malt more prominent, finishing with a herbal and bready flavour
M - light and well carbonated, creamy and refreshing, finishing somewhat bready
O - tis the season for hefe and this one is crafted for hot day outdoor sipping, not top of the class but better than average and worth a bomber or two

750 ml swing top bottle.
New release, now in large format bottle vs cans.

Pours into a pilsner glass a hazy light yellow with a good amount of bright white foamy head that holds well. Nose is light fruits, banana esters, floral, cloves and a yeast auroma. Taste is similiar; lots of banana and bubblegum flavour mixed with other fruits and lingering yeast. Though the initial punch remains flavourful. Light to medium bodied, smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Overall I have to say this is a decent beer and brought more than I initially thought it might. Easy drinking and nice low abv means it's perfect for the approaching weather. There's some discussion about this being the same version that was in cans and it's been changed to seasonal, put in a vintage bottle and costs more. I can't speak to much of that, and while I think the "vintage 2011" on the label is silly, I did enjoy this bottle and believe it would make a better seasonal beer than year round. Muskokas seasonal bottles have been 2/2 for me being excellent, I tried their sampler can pack last year and walked away unimpressed, so needless to say I think they are making great strides.

Served in: weizen

A - a pale yellow colour that looks slightly darker than most hefes. also less cloudy than most typical hefe's i've tried. one finger worth of head that doesn't stick around as long as most hefe's but laces well none the less.

S - nice hints of banana and spicy aromas, the two things i love most about Hefe's! i can also smell a slight hint of citrus in there.

T - The taste is similar to the smell. Lots of banana flavour and the citrus becomes more prominent (orange most likely). The spice isn't as prominent in the taste but its perfect for my liking! i can also see why some might think the taste doesn't live up to the smell, but either way i'm loving it.

M - slightly more carbonated than i expected (just perfect for me) and feels great on the tongue. very refreshing and goes down a lot smoother than i expected it too because of the carbonation. a light taste for sure with little alcohol coming through.

O - a great beer from Muskoka! i've really come to love their beers recently and this one did not dissapoint. hefe's are my favourite type of beer so i usually have high expectations and this one did just what i wanted it too! i recommend it to anyone who can get their hands on it as it is more than worth a try and could easily become one of my "go-to" summer beers.

Glowing, hazy honey colour with lots of visible carbonation. Awesome Weihenstephaner-style giant, rocky off-white head. Great retention and lacing.

Tons of banana, candy malt, coriander and clove with a juicy citrus edge. A hint of herbal hops. Really nice smell.

Great balance of everything you'd want in a weisse: banana, bubblegum, clove, coriander. The candy malt pairs really well with a slightly-drying herbal finish. The only improvement could be a more intense flavour; it's not explosive in the way Weihenstephaner is.

The feel could definitely be beefed up. Decent medium-light body and light carbonation.

I'm pretty impressed, this is one of the better weisse beers I've had. Extremely drinkable; this 750ml would be no problem to finish off alone. $6 is not a terrible price for a beer of this quality in such a nice bottle. I'll be picking up more of this for sure.

Purchased as a single at the LCBO served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well but pours no head. Unfiltered

S- Yeast

T- Smoke! Lightly smoked beer. Guess in Muskoka away from civilization the fire constantly burns! LOL

M- Ok at best. This one is watery.

O- Ok but not great. If I could break up my ratings you would see that taste was high but smell poor

Food Pairing

This ok beer went well with....... BBQ hamburgers

Enjoy

A = poured a piullowy two finger head - good carbonation - paychy lacing - beautiful orange wheat color - cloudy

S - bananas, wheat and orange

T - bananas, biscuits and cloves - then a little orange peel - then a lot more orange - as it opened up the orange peel became more apparent and in fact it became a little unbalanced at the end - scored it based on the first half

M - medium body and plenty of carbonation - a little dry and sour in the finish - very noce overall

O - really enjoyed the first half of this beer - upon the first sip I felt I had tasted something special however as it opened up it seemed to lose its centre and was a little unbalanced

Can: Poured a lightly hazy dirty orangey color ale with a rather large foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of bubblegum and banana is very nice. Taste is also a nice mix between some banana bread and bubblegum 3ith some quite delectable wheat malt. Body is about average with great carbonation. Very well done with some really interesting ester.

Finally got around to this one which had a best before date of Aug 1, 2011 but should still be fresh enough.

Poured in to Sierra Nevada pint glass.

A - Light to medium yellow with half a finger of bubbly, white head that quickly disappeared. Lots of visible carbonation.

S - Citrus, honey, Belgian yeast and some light bready notes.

T - Citrus, cloves, banana, Belgian yeast, some bready notes. A good overall sweetness with a slight bitterness.

M - Light body with moderate carbonation.

O - I really enjoyed this one. A great example of the style. I wish I had tried this one sooner as it makes an outstanding summer beer.

Received this bottle in a trade with liamt07. Cheers!

Tasted in July 2011.

Tasting notes: The color is golden yellow. Little head. Big bottle, so the first pour is clear. A little bit surprising. The second glass is slightly veiled. I would expect more haziness here. The aroma is fruity (orange and citrus). The smell is refreshing and inviting. Taste is fruity with some cloves. Dominated by fruits (oranges). The mouthfeel is very carbonated. Dry. Refreshing. Thin body. This is tasty and refreshing for the summer hot days. I like it. Thanks Liam.

amber, hazy with a nice tow inch head at the top. Head faded to reveal a thin film, with no side glass lace. Nice visible carbonation from the bottom.

S - Lots of wheat and yeast, light with a touch of banana. Good balance, nice aroma.great wheat, earthy yeast like flavor, light with just a touch of fruit, banana and pear mostly. Not watered down, flavor has a nice pop. Light enough to just slide down, good carbonation kept it from feeling too thin, not slick, crisp and clean finish.

Superb, I could drink this all day long, the flavor and feel combine to make a perfect summer taste, great hot weather drinker.

Overall this was a damn fine hefe.
