Notes/Commercial Description:
Seasonally brewed and available in limited quantities, Muskoka Summer Weiss ("vice") is crafted with visions of summer in mind. Unfiltered and naturally hazy by design, the perfect balance of wheat, barley and subtle hopping makes this an intriguingly aromatic, flavourful and sessionable summer wheat beer. To release more flavour, agitate bottle slightly before opening. Cheers to you Summer!

750 mL swing-top bottle from the LCBO; 2012 vintage. I love this time of year for various reasons - and the fact that there is no shortage of wheat beers on shelves right now is a significant one. Rolled the bottle a bit before opening, as per instructions, and served only slightly chilled.

Pours a sunny golden-yellow colour - foggy, but not murky or totally opaque like some hefes. Highly effervescent - and with one impressive pillowy white head. I had to pour my pint slowly over a period of minutes so that it wouldn't erupt out of the glass - sort of like a delicious baking soda volcano. When it finally does settle into a rocky, one-finger head, the glass is caked in lacing. The aroma is great as well - yeasty with lots of banana, peach, apricot esters and some light citrus. Good wheat malt backbone with some grassy hops underlying it all, but not much clove. Still, it's pretty enticing so far.

The taste does not disappoint at all. Wheat malt sweetness and the yeastiness provide a firm backbone for the variety of fruity flavours. Banana is probably the most prominent one, but I would also mention the orange peel, ripe pear and juicy apricot, as well as an understated clove spiciness. A bit chewy for a 5%er, with a yeasty, slightly dry aftertaste. Medium-bodied, with spritzy carbonation that helps cut through the chew - just the way I like my hefes. Relatively light mouthfeel for the style, but the improved drinkability vs. other examples is noted.

Here I was all set to complain about having to buy two wine bottles of this (packaged together) - and now I'm just happy that there's another bottle! I sincerely hope there are more of these left on the shelves the next time I am shopping in London.

Final Grade: 4.33, a very respectable A grade. Muskoka's Summer Weiss is a superb hefe; nailing most of the things I like about the style, but with a few added twists that give it a unique, memorable character. I skipped out on Muskoka's winter seasonal (Winter Beard), but I am sort of regretting that after seeing the quality of this one. Oh well, the seasons change - to everything turn, turn, turn and all that nonsense. Turn your vehicle into the parking lot of your local LCBO and pick this one up while you still can.

This review is from notes from August.

Pours clear pale gold (very little haze to speak of) with a big, patchy head that immediately recedes to a ring. Citrus, cloves and banana in the nose. Crisp wheat malt and cookie dough mingle with cloves and fruity esters. Wet grains and some slight vegetal flavors in the back. The mouthfeel is light bodied with a moderate, lively carbonation. Light hop bitterness and fruitiness in the short finish.

A decent Hefe. Could have more nuance and flavor intensity, but it covers all the bases of the style - fruity, estery, crisp. Worth a try.

A - light and cloudy honey yellow, very little head which dissipated fairly evenly but very quickly, appears low carbonation

S - very nice aromas of banana, pineapple, honey, fresh cut grass, mango, hay

T - citrus, banana, orange, some very slight cinnamon spice and a slight honey after taste

M - very refreshing and cleansing, finishes wet, feels much more carbonated against the tongue which i didn't expect as i thought it was fairly low carbonation at the pour

O - I really like the Muskoka Summer Weiss, it was very refreshing and enjoyable to drink. I found the smell very nice with a lot of pleasant aromas which was very similar to the taste.

A - a pale yellow colour that looks slightly darker than most hefes. also less cloudy than most typical hefe's i've tried. one finger worth of head that doesn't stick around as long as most hefe's but laces well none the less.

S - nice hints of banana and spicy aromas, the two things i love most about Hefe's! i can also smell a slight hint of citrus in there.

T - The taste is similar to the smell. Lots of banana flavour and the citrus becomes more prominent (orange most likely). The spice isn't as prominent in the taste but its perfect for my liking! i can also see why some might think the taste doesn't live up to the smell, but either way i'm loving it.

M - slightly more carbonated than i expected (just perfect for me) and feels great on the tongue. very refreshing and goes down a lot smoother than i expected it too because of the carbonation. a light taste for sure with little alcohol coming through.

O - a great beer from Muskoka! i've really come to love their beers recently and this one did not dissapoint. hefe's are my favourite type of beer so i usually have high expectations and this one did just what i wanted it too! i recommend it to anyone who can get their hands on it as it is more than worth a try and could easily become one of my "go-to" summer beers.

A white head on a hazy apricot. Good head retention.

Mild fruit smells. Tastes of banana and clove. Very mild bready yeast. A mildly spicy finish with a very slight sour twist.

Vey smooth. Medium light body. Very good on tap. An understated but well-crafted Weisse.
