Notes/Commercial Description:
While the legend of Mad Tom is laden with mystery and intrigue, one thing remains clear - Mad Tom did things his own way. Twice as Mad Tom is an aggressively twice dry-hopped Imperial India Pale Ale, that delivers a definitive hop aroma and unabashedly big bold flavor. We brew this beer with the road less traveled in mind, and in the spirit of old Mad Tom, we make no bones about it.

355ml bottle. A double eye pee eh from Ontaria, ya do say? Well, if there ever was, it would surely be these fellers doin' it.

This beer pours a clear medium golden amber hue, with two fingers of puffy, silky, foamy off-white head, which leaves some low-pressure inversion layer lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of bitter orange and grapefruit rind, acrid pine resin, bready caramel malt, a touch of musty toffee, and some further lemony, earthy hop notes. The taste is more bitter generic citrus pith, pine sap, lemon cleanser (in a good way, I swear!), lightly honeyed caramel malt, and some mowed down and beaten tropical fruit esters.

The carbonation is a tad prickly, but mostly just supportive, the body a sturdy medium weight, and actually fairly smooth, just a few barbs from the persistent bitter hops getting in the way. It finishes off-dry, the bread and the caramel tones still jousting with tangy, fruity, zesty hops.

A pretty bang-on example of the style - big-ass hoppy, but balanced enough without making one too award of the sweetness required to actually accomplish this feat. I am pleased as punch to have the rest of this reasonably priced four-pack yet to enjoy.

Burnt orange colour with light haze. Creamy, tightly formed, beige head. Good retention and lace. Grapefruit rind and floral aromatics with nuances of toasted bread and pine. Juicy tangerine and grapefruit flavour up front, followed by delicate toasted nuts and a strong citrus pith bitterness that lingers into the long finish. Medium-full bodied with low carbonation. Feels smooth and substantial in the mouth with a resinous stickiness between gulps. And gulp this delicious beer you will. This is a solid, decent hop fix for anyone in Ontario who finds themselves in need of one. Nice beer!

Bottle just arrived at the LCBO. A good drinking DIPA. Millennium, Chinook, Cascade, Columbus and Aurora hops. Orange and tangerine, a complex and interesting melange. Smooth for a DIPA, not a palate eraser. Something I would certainly drink again, and again.Hazy orange.

Bottle to Glass

Appearance - Poured a hazy copper/orange, a lot of hop haze, a nice white head

Smell - Tropical fruits, pine as well, strong smell

Taste - Same as the smell, tropical fruits, pine comes through, good amount of bitterness

Overall - A well made DIPA

A - clear dark golden, one finger of white head retained respectably, good amount of random lacing as I took it down
S - hints of grapefruit, tangy lime, subtle perfumes, sweet bubble gum, and a faint hint of caramel
T - earthy with sweet citrus, quickly followed by a distinctive bubble gum or cotton candy type thing, light mineral quality, and mild sweet malt
M - medium to light body with ample carbonation, although no real hop bitter or dry to speak of, very easy drinking just missing a bit of the punch that I enjoy in a DIPA
O - gentle but diverse hop flavours with a crazy and inviting sweet candy flavour that makes it tough to put down, I will be buying more of this for sure

Pours a dark, copper, clear. Off white, light beige head. Nose is pungent hops, lots of fruit, citrus, sweet pear, sugary. Twice tastes pretty hoppy upfront, sweetness comes into the middle, caramel lingering balance. Distinctly Mad Tom, a good hoppy beer when fresh. A Nice attempt at an underrepresented style for Ontario.

Pretty good Canadian attempt at an IPA. Pretty expensive though which brings down it's value for the money a bit. 4 pack at The Beer Store for just over $13.00.

A- Nice copper colour. Good head on pour.

S- Rather nice bouquet, hints of floral.

T- Moderately good example of an DIPA/IPA. As a Canadian brew not bad, as an international brew, not so good.

M- Typical IPA

O- Again very good for Canada, pretty mediocre for the world

Thx for looking

Received in CANBIF 2013. Thanks Peensteen! There should be more DIPA’s in small format. I haven’t had the Mad Tom IPA to compare.

Apperance: 2 fingers of pure white head. Well carbonated, golden orange amber, no cloudiness. Good looking beer.

Smell: Sweet, piney hoppiness, bit of citrus. Had me drooling.

Taste: Strong piney bitterness with sweet citrus notes. Really tasty, big beer. Alocohol well hidden.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, with a slight/moderate level of oilyness.

Overall: Really enjoyed this beer. Tastes as good as it smells. Would be happy if I could get this locally.

Poured a two finger off white head that subsided to a nice collar of fine suds, amber copper body, sticky patchy lacing. Scent is caramel malt, pine, tangerine citrus. Taste follows the nose, some mango, pineapple, fresh bread, prickly pine lingering finish, really quite nice. Medium body, some carbonation, nicely bitter, slick oily feel, medium dry. Mad Tom with more booze, more hops, more malt, more good!

Big thank you to Caudalie for this want inside my CANBIF box.

Appearance. Pours a rich gold with a little amber and a light haze. Topped with a finger of white head.

Smell. Oranges, grapefruit, mango and pineapple, a bit of cedar and light grainy malts, and just a faint whiff of green onion.

Taste. Nice tropical fruits, mainly papaya and mango, some candied pineapple and yellow grapefruits, and nice malts with a touch of caramel.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, below medium smooth carbonation.

Overall. A great IPA with lots of fruit flavours going on and still not too sweet. Great stuff, thanks again, Caudalie!

Bottle: Poured a dark amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrus and earthy hops is quite dominant. Taste is also dominated by loads of caramel malt with maybe a tad too much sugar and some notes citrus and resin hops that are quite powerful. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed though I think I actually prefer the regular Tom over this one.

Fresh bottle reviewed on 11/11/12. Poured in to tulip.

A - Translucent medium orange. One finger of tan coloured head with good retention.

S - Sweet caramel malts up front that immediately give way to a moderate hop bitterness and some grapefruit, pine and orange peel aromas. Fairly well balanced nose.

T - Sharp bitterness at first that is followed by a big caramel malt sweetness. Some grapefruit, pine and lighter lemon zest flavours are present. Well balanced.

M - Medium body. Light carbonation. Lots of sticky hop oils.

O - A well made beer but not my kind of DIPA. Would like more hop assertiveness.

Pours a translucent tawny orange colour, with a slightly off white finger of head leaving nice lace behind. The aroma was citrus notes, with a crisp mango note, noticeable pine, and hints of caramel sweetness. Taste kicks it up a notch with a nice medium bitterness level, citrus and tropical fruits and a doughy malt sweetness. Feel is a bit under carbonated on the tongue, with a creamy, slick feel.

Overall, a nice well drinkable DIPA!
