A freind gave me this over the weekend here in the triad,I have been to Federal Jacks a few times.Pours a deep color with a half finger light beige head atop.Aromas are sweet with molasses and brown sugar notes, some roast underneath.Sweet on the palate with the molasses flavors being predominant, some dark roast and mild earthiness to cut off the sweetness just enough in the finish. Not bad but the sweetness and fizzy feel detracts from it.

Appearance: next to no head, dark brown

Smell: toasted malt and some woody smell

Taste: toasted malt, coffee, and some birch taste

Mouthfeel: medium body, semi-sweet, and smooth

Drinkability:An average porter, that really does not jump out of the box. It is not bad, but will not wow you either. i would have it again, but one was enough.

Opened 12 oz bottle and poured into Nonic glass.

Small 1" - .75" head atop a dark brown mostly opaque brew. Not a lot of bubbles rising. Color best described as flat cola.

Definite coffee notes on nose with some malts. Taste is a bit earthy, but coffee flavors run through. Pleasant finish. Not fancy, just good.

I'm glad I bought a six pack of these.

Pours a deep mahogany with scarlet edging and a tan head that recedes to a skin quickly, leaving little to no lacing.

Aromas of toffee, coffee, black cherries and burnt pretzel come together nicely.

The taste is heavy on toasted dark malts with a background of coffee. A hint of toffee sweetness and lingering dark fruit are detected.

Mouthfeel is medium, oily with a little bit of stickiness. Alcohol warmth is faintly detected also. Carbonation is about right for a porter.

Overall an average brew, nothing to get excited about.

2012 dated 12 oz bottle from Trader Joe's served in a pint glass. (see update below)

Pours a very dark mahogany; clear with a smallish but lasting tan head.

The aroma is mainly of dark malts; slightly smokey and peppery with a hint of dark fruits.

Taste: Complex and rich. Also slightly smokey and peppery, particularly in the finish; a nice bit of dark chocolate mid-palate. Some sprucy hops on the finish.
M: smooth with a bit of crispness; good carbonation level.

O: not a typical porter, but I found it to be quite enjoyable, and a bargain at TJ prices. Changes flavor upon warming but tasty throughout.

(revised with BB 2014 bottle in Nov. 2013. Definitely not retired, label reads KBC Porter, and ABV = 5.6% -- different {and less enjoyable} beer?)

Appearance - Pours near black; deep ruby brown when held to light. The head is off-white and a good finger thick, but the retention is average, and the resulting lace is sparse.

Smell - Roasted malt goodness; hints of coffee, toffee and some drying hop aromas.

Taste - Nice roasty coffee character, with a touch of toffee sweetness to round it out. Good balance. Strong. Finishes with a semi-sweet chocolate flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium body; fairly robust. Nice, lively carbonation. Smooth. Finishes semi-dry.

Overall - Nice porter. It's a nice addition to the Trader Joe's line-up, and a hell of a deal for the $5.99 asking price.

12 oz. twistoff bottle poured into a pint glass. Shows a moderate brown with half an inch of tan foam, and a clear deep amber brown in the light. Decent retention and lacing follow.

Nose is light with a bit of carob and light chocolate. Pleasant but not too intriguing either.

Flavor follows the nose and is light and subdued for a Porter and half way to a Nut Brown in flavor. Body is light as well yet without being thin and keeps things interesting. Touch of earthy hops with warming combine with a milk chocolate sweetness that doesn't overwhelm, or linger for that matter. Finish is dry and a bit chalky in nature yet fairly well balanced.

Overall a straight forward and light bodied porter that's easy on the palate.
