12oz bottle (best by 12/2012) poured into a Shaker pint glass.

Appearance: Dark Mahogany brown when held up to the light. Persistent thin light tan head across the top. Some strands of persistent lacing noted.

Smell: Rich roasted malt, burnt sugar. Barest hint of cocoa.

Taste: Much like it smells - roasted malt, burnt sugar dominate. Coffee and bittersweet dark chocolate in here as well. Finish is part black coffee, part roasted malt. Tasty.

Mouthfeel: High carbonation, just below fizzy. Under all that carbonation I can pick out some thickness to the beer - just a hair above water.

Overall: A solidly good American porter. Went real well with cider porkchops and I could easily have another. If the carbonation was dropped just a tad it would be even better.

This beer was sold as a Porter, my evaluation is based on that.

Appearance - Brown in color with a thick well formed head

Smell - Grass and hops

Taste - Overly hoppy lightly sweet taste

Mouthfeel - Thin and watery, no substance

Overall - The pour got my attention, from there everything went down hill. It was to thin and watery with almost no Mouthfeel.

It doesn't meet my idea of what a good Porter should be.

From notes.
12oz bottle from a 6-pack purchased at the Trader Joe’s on Spokane’s South Hill. According to the label, this was best by October, 2014.

Poured a dark brown color, with a big, creamy and rocky tan head. When held up to light, things took on a dark amber shade.

The aroma was of roasted malts and a surprising amount of grassy, herbal hops.

The taste was what one might expect from a black lager brewed with heavily roasted malts, except for the ale-like finish. There was a bitter, astringent flavor as well. It did not seem much like a porter

Thin, watery mouthfeel for a porter.

I suppose this might work as a porter for people who don’t like porters, yet it’s too bitter for the Newcastle crowd (not sayin’ much, just sayin’). I’m at a loss as to what sort of beer drinker this is meant for.

Pours a dark, dark brown like no one's business with a frothy head into my glass. Good lacing on the glass.

Robust with a good dose of cocoa in the nose. Other than that, I can't smell anything else to write about.

Surprisingly tasty. A slight roast compliments the cocoa notes.

My only complaint would be that it seems thin toward the back.

You know, it's easy to lose sight of a good porter when you're primarily chasing the biggest, hoppiest beers around. I would recommend this.

Kennebunkport Porter has a thin, cream-colored head, no lacing left behind, and a dark brown (ruby, under direct light) appearance. The aroma is of turned or spoiled raw spinach and dark grain, and after the beer warms a bit, one gets sweet syrup and acidic hops. Taste is of dark grain, turned fruit or vegetable matter, acidity, some chocolate powder, and a background stinging bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and somewhat powdery, and KBC Porter finishes semi-dry, and it does improve in flavor after it settles down and warms. But, make sure you let it warm and settle down!

Brown with an overall very dark but clear body, tinges of amber when held to the light, light brown head, some lacing.

Aroma and taste: I'm getting a buttery note, pretty clearly so. Diacetyl? Well Samuel Smith's beers have diacetyl sometimes, and I still drink them, and I CAN detect it, so that in itself isn't an automatic ding. However, it's somewhat distracting and a bit overpowering in this beer, masking the roasty, coffee, and burnt flavors that are in the background. I almost get just a brief hint of a scent induced memory of some sort of glue from grade school. Well, it was probably non-toxic glue, so that's a plus. But overall there's something taking center stage on the flavor and it's not typically porter.

The body's about right for a porter, medium to medium-light, mild to moderate carbonation, lingering bitterness and roastiness.

I noted a lot of reviews mentioning no sweetness to this beer. I am not getting that, I detect some sugars, almost like there's a touch of lactose in this one. It's certainly there, but how noticeable it is probably depends on your own thresholds for certain flavors.

Well for a buck a bottle, all of the trader joe's beers have been just fine (tho some better than others). This isn't one of the better of the 15 different beers I got from trader joe's, but what the hey, I'm going to finish it, so that's not bad.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of November 2014. Sampled on March 11, 2014.

The pour is dark amber brown with a modest tan head that leaves lacing. Also some reddish hues if held to the light just right.

The aroma is of dark malts, butter, olive oil, slight chocolate, and a vague earthy hop note.

The body is light to medium and about right for the style.

The taste has a quick burst of sweet malts which are followed nearly immediately by a modest hop bite the ends on the dry side. Not an extraordinary Porter but one that I found to be drinkable.

This beer is sold at Trader Joe's stores for about $6 a six-pack, so a dollar a bottle. It's not a great porter, but it's easy drinking, dark and malty, and is low in alcohol. No one would ever mistake this for a high quality porter, it simply isn't, but it's close enough when you're looking for something... close enough. I have a couple six packs waiting at home.

For a dollar a bottle, though, it might very well be the best beer in the world.
