From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of November 2014. Sampled on March 11, 2014.

The pour is dark amber brown with a modest tan head that leaves lacing. Also some reddish hues if held to the light just right.

The aroma is of dark malts, butter, olive oil, slight chocolate, and a vague earthy hop note.

The body is light to medium and about right for the style.

The taste has a quick burst of sweet malts which are followed nearly immediately by a modest hop bite the ends on the dry side. Not an extraordinary Porter but one that I found to be drinkable.

This beer is sold at Trader Joe's stores for about $6 a six-pack, so a dollar a bottle. It's not a great porter, but it's easy drinking, dark and malty, and is low in alcohol. No one would ever mistake this for a high quality porter, it simply isn't, but it's close enough when you're looking for something... close enough. I have a couple six packs waiting at home.

For a dollar a bottle, though, it might very well be the best beer in the world.

Poured from a bottle into a glass mug. First time tasting this beer.

A- Very dark almost black ruby color. Looks like a Cola. Very little tan colored head, a few centimeters of it (maybe my glass ruined the head?). Leaves a thin ring of froth and a tiny bit of lacing.

S- Dark roasted malts. Roasty and Earthy. Black coffee. A little hops.

T- A strong hop bitterness at first with heavy dark roasted almost burnt malts. Black coffee taste right in the middle. The hops surprised me. No sweetness whatsoever. The aftertaste is of burnt malts and bitterness.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Good carbonation. It feels crisp from the carbonation.

O- Overall, this is a good beer. It's great when you're in the mood for a dark strong cup of black coffee with no sugar.

Reviewed from notes dated October 17th, 2013.

Dark brown/mahogany body with a lasting white head. Strong toffee and vanilla notes in the aroma. Taste produced elements of coffee and cream with a light bitter chocolate edge. Very smooth bodied; soft, semi-sweet; medium body.

Very smooth and delectable. Right balance of dark malt goodness with an oh-so subtle hop bitterness. Creamy. Touch of lactose sourness.

A freind gave me this over the weekend here in the triad,I have been to Federal Jacks a few times.Pours a deep color with a half finger light beige head atop.Aromas are sweet with molasses and brown sugar notes, some roast underneath.Sweet on the palate with the molasses flavors being predominant, some dark roast and mild earthiness to cut off the sweetness just enough in the finish. Not bad but the sweetness and fizzy feel detracts from it.
