500ml can poured into a pint glass

Appearance - The beer pours an amber colour with an average size frothy and fizzy off white head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing. There is also some great lacing and the head lasted for a couple of minutes.

Smell - the beer smells slightly metallic, also some hops and caramel

Taste & Mouth - The beer actually has an okay mouth feel. There isn't much carbonation on the tongue, but it still feels okay. I can taste the hops, breads and grains, and it is slightly metallic. Unfortunately it comes across as a little watery and not a whole lot of flavour

Drink - an average beer that I may or may not seek out again.

Wells IPA is the 'Kraft singles slice' of the beer world: industrially processed, intentionally bland, made from inferior ingredients, and bears little resemblance to what it claims to be. Please make no mistake about this clear, auburn-amber ale - it looks normal enough but it's exceptionally awful.

Of course, if you've smelled the beer you already knew that. Overlooking for now the complete absence of hoppiness (the single most distinguishing feature of the style), this aroma is marred not only by a tall order of chemically, corn syrup-like adjuncts but also countless wretched byproducts of fermentation.

Whoever at the brewery is giving this beer the green light should be fired. Simple as that. It suffers desperately from diacetyl (cloying butterscotch taste) and has an off-putting cereal graininess that should be acceptable only as horse feed or nuclear fallout rations. Picking something random off my front lawn would probably yield a more agreeable flavour.

Equally offensive is the lack of hops; there's not a trace of grassiness, fruit, herbals, pine, flowers, or spice anywhere in the aroma or flavour or bitterness (heck, there is no bitterness). Selling an IPA with no detectable hoppiness is the equivalent of making fried chicken without the crispy breading - you're getting it wrong, and you've taken away the best, most important part.

There's really no other way to put it: this beer is an unfortunate thing. Wells IPA is an IPA in name only. Those naive consumers who buy and drink this are getting no more a taste of a true IPA than those at a Sandals resorts are getting an authentic experience of Jamaican culture. This give Keith's a run for the poorest excuse of an India Pale Ale I've ever tried. Stay away!

Sampled from a Beau's Willi Becher glass, producing an eggshell hued head on pouring, leaves a nice receding lace on the sides of the glass. Sparkling deep amber beneath. Nose is quite weak for an IPA, if I didn't know better I'd guess it a lager, being mostly lightly malty with tiny bit of hop. Thin mouthfeel with light malt tones and then you taste a bit of hoppy bitterness. Finshes weak and flabby, nice for hot weather/session drinking but never a serious contender for a true IPA.

Serving Type - 500ml can poured into a nonic pint glass

Appearance - Beer pours a clear copper colour, with a red hue. There is some a moderate white head that sticks around for a while. A reasonable amount of lacing is left behind.

Smell - Not much aroma coming off this brew. What is there is grainy and metallic. Not unpleasant, but certainly not appealing.

Taste - Getting an unpleasant metallic taste. I don't see a freshness date...but maybe it's old? I don't know. There is something of a hop profile but it's way to understated for the style. Maybe some caramel malts coming through as well.

Mouthfeel - Medium mouthfeel. Not too watery, not to thick. Carbonation is medium to low.

Overall - 2.75/5

BB (28/05/13) Beer pours a fluffy finger or two of soapy head, leaving a nice film and respectably good lacing. Colour is an intriguing medium-dark chestnut/oak brown.

Nose has round malts, hops are present but fairly light. Stale vegetable and skunked notes. Not really defined. IPA aromas don't really come through.

Taste has some initial full maltiness with a few caramel undertones then hop bitterness comes through with dryness. Dry, with a profile focusing on a moderate hop bitterness and a big malt presence. Typical and somewhat unremarkable. Finish is medium bitter and dry.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin, course carbonation, slightly watery. Medium bodied, and fairly in keeping with the style for texture. Drinkability is okay but quite boring.

This one didn't come across as particularly memorable. Fits into the style but without many outstanding features. Drinking this isn't inspiring or overly pleasant. There are far better ones out there.
