Poured a dark, dark amber, almost brown. The beer looks black, until held up to the light, at which point amber and ruby highlights show through. Light brown head that fades quickly to a ring, and stays all the way down.

Smells a bit of oats (not surprisingly), and malt.
Tastes a bit of dark malt up front, followed immediately by oats and a bit of a biscuit taste. A fair bit of hop bitterness in the wash, a little stronger than it needs to be, considering the low profile of the malts. A slight aftertaste of bitterness and toasted sourdough.

Just slips across the tongue, and slides down the throat. Feels bigger than it is, and almost chewy. This is definitely made from oats. There is a tail of alcohol astringent at the end, which detracts somewhat from the experience.

It's a pretty good example of an oatmeal stout, with more stout than oatmeal. Easy to drink, and a bit rewarding for the effort. Not the best oatmeal stout I've had, but a good try.

Overall, a good, enjoyable oatmeal stout, but certainly not the best representation of the syle... this sample has nothing on Samuel Smith's.... nice, ebony, jet-black appearance with a tan, frothy head... smell, as expected, is complete with dark cocoa and espresso notes... taste strongly complements the aroma, with dark, burnt-chocolate, dark-cappuccino flavors that are rich and tasty... would certainly go great with sweets and chocolate candy... not as sweet as I was hoping for... somewhat bland compared to other Oatmeal Stouts I've sampled... good stuff, and not bad at all... Young's Winter Warmer was superb, and although this was not disappointing, wasn't the best depiction of the style... better out there, but this was certainly worth a try...

Bottle served at the BC Beer Café in Helsinki. Beer is pitch black (okay, VERY dark brown), low to no head. There's some irritating carbonation that pricks on the tongue - if given the choice, I would most likely prefer some nitrogen in a beer of this style (I know that many of you will disagree with me on that!) Moderate roast aroma, the rounded flavour has some coffee notes with a strong oatmeal presence, hardly any bitterness to match the sweetness. Porridge aftertaste. Very filling - I had it 1 hour after a solid breakfast, and it was like having another full meal ("liquid oatmeal porridge"). Of course it's not a bad beer, but as my expectations were sky high, you'll have to forgive me for being a bit disappointed.

I had the bottled version, although the store had the cans available too. Not sure which is better.

Anyway, nice looking beer. Standard pint glass, poured the usual stouty opaque brown/black. Good, creamy tan head that stuck around while I drank it.

Aroma is milk chocolate, candy, grains, and raisin bread or cake. Also, oddly enough, caught some very earthy or even 'beach-like' or 'ocean' aromas in there. Not sure where that came from... can't remember where I actually drank this, but it wasn't on a beach!

Great creamy mouthfeel. Initial sips have metallic note to them. Flavour is bitter chocolate, toffee, and roasted malt. Higher carbonation than expected and a somewhat unpleasantly tart aftertaste lowers drinkability.

Inky black colour with brown highlights and a dense, light brown head. Both retention and stickage were quite good, as expected for a stout. Malt was all over the aroma, with generous amounts of roasted and coffee, as well as a bit of chocolate and toffee.

Perceived hop bitterness was moderate, with a considerable contribution from malt sweetness and roasted (some coffee) character. The finish is quite roasted and some bitterness at this point is clearly coming from the grain. Fairly high carbonation with a medium body and a little graininess. Texture was on the creamy side.

Overall, the bitterness was more pronounced than expected and the malt character was balanced a little too strongly towards roasted coffee. Still, a nice stout. Poured from a 22 oz. brown bomber.

This beer pours a dark black, I don't know why the bottle says "ruby." Great look, with a perfect head that remains the entire time. Aroma is heavy with a sort of cream coffee smell, some chocolate hints and roasted malts. The roasted malts really shin in the taste, with a lot of vanilla and milk chocolate. This beer is creamy and smooth, very drinkable.


Not my favorite oatmeal stout (I'll still choose Sam Smith's), but this a very solid brew to enjoy.

A very satisfying and robust stout. The aroma is the forst thing that grabs me...a very roasty-malty kind of thing. Thsi si a good knife-and-fork beer - the beer that drinks like a meal. One of the best British stouts I have tried!

Poured from 1 pt 0.9 oz bottle into imperial pint glass.
A: Initially appears black, but with backlighting is a very dark garnet. Thin tan head forms and quickly dissipates.
S: Cream, roasted malt, and a hint of coffee and licorice.
T: Roasted malt and coffee. Not as sweet as I was expecting. Hint of grain (barley I guess) at the end. Not as good as the aroma.
M: Light body and taste is unfortunately quickly gone (I find it surprising that even the bottle comments on it's "short...finish"). Dry finish.
D: Light and drinkable, but I'd have to give a nod to any of a half dozen other oatmeal stouts above this one. Above average and drinkable if nothing else is around.

Appearance: Beautiful dark brown, a little red at the bottom of the glass when held by a light. Tiny bubbles floating up the sides of the glass. Poured 3 finger cola colored head.

Smell: Sweet and smoky. Cedar?

Taste: It tastes just like it smells. Nice roasted taste.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth and not a lot of carbonation.

Drinkability: Easy to drink. Not particularly my style, but I think it would be good in the fall with a bonfire or something.

Dark brew with slight amber color swirls. Small foamy tan head that did not last, some lacing. Smells of brown sugar. Taste is slightly sweet with a smooth finish. Good beer, easy to drink. I had a large bottle 1pt 2.7 oz and was disappointed when it was empty. I would definitely have another.

A nice deep dark brown topped with a creamy off-white to tan head that cascades to the top out of the nitro can. It lingers there for a while, but eventually dies and only the lace on the glass remains. Aroma is pretty weak, but it has a nice bit of roasty malts with some coffee and a bit of chocolate.

The body is a bit thin on this one, and the flavor is lacking. The creamy mouthfeel is excellent, but I would really like some more flavor. Roasty malts with a bit of chocolate in small portions cover the basics, but I would like more. Not at all a bad stout, but it is definitely a weak one.

I had this on tap at Barleyhoppers in Riverview. One of three Young's offerings they have on tap. This one was a BEAR for the bartender to pour, but it was worth the wait once it warmed up. This ale is dark. dark as in you look into it to long and you will lose your soul dark. Pitch black with a coffee and cream color head that sticks the whole way down the pint. This has a clean cream and coffee flavor that is very pleasant . I'd say this is pretty well balanced in that it isn't very dry or icky overpoweringly sweet. This makes for a very drinkable stout!

Poured from a fresh bomber into a working glass

The pour is so darkly brown as to be black unless up against a bright light. The cap is a rocky, light-chocolate colored froth that leaves thick lacing as it falls. Very heavy in appearance. The nose is fairly light. Grainy, backbone of sweet coffee and barely hints of oatmeal. The coffee notes come through strong in the mouth. Very light banana notes, maybe. The coffee bittering is well balanced and not overpowering. Fairly strong toasted and short dry finish. Very smooth, coats the mouth. Oatmeal is present in this brew, both in nose and feel, lightly in taste.
Overall very smooth and drinkable, not overly bitter or strong in any one characteristic.

A- Really thick dark tan head on a black body.
S- Big roasted malts and oatmeal. Some English malts come through along with a English yeast strain. Maybe a few off aromas but that's probably just getting shipped from England.
T- Follows the aroma. Really smooth feel to it, almost creamy. Oatmeal and light coffee to it also. The roasted flavors make for a dry aftertaste along with just a light bitterness on tip of tongue.
M- Medium/thin body with low carbonation. Silky body to it.
D- I think it is a good brew but there are better oatmeal stouts out there.

Appearance – This Stout is pure engine oil black in color with a big, retentive head.

Smell – The dark, roasty malts come out nicely here and are mixed well with the classic oatmeal aroma. There is very little sweetness to the nose.

Taste – The dark malts from the nose come out strongly at the taste. The oatmeal though took a step back. The beer finished with the smallest hint of brown sugar.

Mouthfeel – This light to medium-bodied Stout has a nice bitter roasty mouthfeel but was too thin for my preference of the style.

Drinkability – This one was even-keeled if uninspiring. I did enjoy the extremely dark, burnt nature of this offering from Young’s, though.

Presentation: Poured from a 1 pint, 0.9 oz brown bottle into a Hobgoblin pint glass. Both the label and the bottle display the Young's horns. The beer is described as "a dark, ruby colored stout almost black from a distance, with a beautiful, creamy head." Best before date of 19 Sept 2007.

Appearance: Pours with a huge light tan head. Takes several minutes to fill my glass as the head settles very slowly. When I finally get the contents of the bottle into the glass, I still have an inch of head that rises above the rim of the glass. The head is thick and viscous, there are waves and undulations from the multiple pours. They call this beer ruby, but it sure as hell looks black to me, maybe a litle ruby/brown along the edges, but in general it is a beautiful black.

Smell: Smells strongly of roasted barley. A slight metallic tang.

Taste: At first sip, the head actually proves to be remarkably light and airy, it is easy to drink through. A hint of sweet malt/oats upfront, followed by the bitterness of roasted barley. Roastiness is strong at first, almost a burnt rubber taste, in a pleasant way. Slight hop bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation level is less than average, as expected for a British ale. Body is nice, but not great.

Drinkability: I would like a little more velvety smoothness from an oatmeal stout, the oats are barely present. Not bad, but nothing memorable. The best thing about thid beer is the looks.

I was quite excited to try Young's Oatmeal Stout considering it's spoken of highly. It stands up to my favorite oatmeal stout, Samuel Smiths, but i have misgivings.

It looks very nice in the glass. Good, solid, lasting, tan head.
Smells tasty as can be. Sweet and somewhat smokey.
Tastes like a sweet, chocolatey treat...until it gets closer to room temperature. At that point an unpleasant saltiness kicks in (wherein lies my misgivings).
Feels creamy and smooth, except when it gets warmer and a souring effect takes place.
Good and drinkable, except when reaches room temp.

I'll try this one again and drink it right next time!

Pours a fairly dark black color with a medium-sized, smooth tan head. A nice, thick scent of vanilla malts is present.

The initial taste is toasty and of vanilla. The oatmeal is there, but it's very much an aftertaste and not the predominant flavor, thus the beer is nicely not too sweet. This tastes almost more like a regular stout than an oatmeal stout to me (perhaps a bit disappointing?). There's a slight hoppy taste, the stout-like tingle on the tongue that I love, and an earthy, woody flavor. As the beer warms, I also noticed some coffee flavors.

Alas - the beer is rather thin for a stout (or for an oatmeal stout), and I was kind of expecting more than regular-stout flavors. Not a bad beer, but not fantastic.

Dark, rich color, tight lasting head.
This beer does not flow out of the can and build up like Guinness.
Really no smell to speak of, a slight malt aroma.

This is a fine, smooth beer in taste and mouthfeel. Very pleasing to the pallet.
Gentle, hearty feel with a hint of coffee and sweetness. Like most Oatmeal Stouts, Young's is kind of filling,but not in a bad way.

If you like the style this is an easy to enjoy beer. For me, nothing about it stands up and shouts, but if you offer me one, I couldnt say 'No'.

16.9 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass. served at 55 degrees.
smell: very, very light... creamy, a little bit nutty, a sense of the carbonation.
pour: dark but not pitch black. rather a deep brown fading into black. tall head, bordering on a dark beige.
taste: a bit difficult to distringuish. nutty, almonds, very creamy, yet the carbonation is very much there. perhaps a little too assertive. seems like a very good session beer, and goes down quite easily -- perhaps too easily. not too much body to it... but wait. after a few minutes out, opens up much more.. hints of coffee, malt, fuller body and an excellent aftertaste on the back of the tongue.

general: a good session beer.. make that a very good session beer, and certainly good with a meal. but not something that will make your night. make sure to drink fairly warm though and let it open up a bit... initial taste was far worse than the beer is capable of.

Bought locally (Grapevine refrigerated shelves), 2-3 weeks in my fridge, poured 45F, reviewed 45F-65F.

The head is light cream/tan, almost a little grayish. It's fairly dense and leaves spotty lacing. The beer itself is solid black.

The nose is fruity with hints of coffee and a slight sourness. The front is toffee, with chocolate kicking in as the beer warms up. The middle is sweet and milky and again, chocolate is more noticeable at higher temps. The finish is mildly bitter and slightly sour.

This is a good beer, but not my favorite oatmeal stout. I find both Samuel Smith and St. Ambroise more interesting, more full-bodied and just plain better tasting.

Pours jet black with a thick tan head from a 500ml brown bottle. Has somewhat of a fruity smell and taste for a stout. It has a nice creamy mouthfeel. Not my favorite stout, but tasty nonetheless. There are other stouts I prefer, but this is definitely worth a try.

Pours dark black with a tan/khaki head. Aroma is roasted malt with some smoke and coffee highlights.
Taste is bitter coffee and roasted malt mellowed a bit by the oats. As the beer warms some raisin/date notes seems to appear. Mouthfeel is a little bit thinner than most Oatmeal stouts I've had.
Pretty good but not the best effort from this great brewery.

Pours a rich dark garnet...bordering on black, but light does get all the way through.

Exceptionally retentive head, took several minutes to settle to a thick layer of lacing.

Smells mildly of roasted malt and a hint of chocolate.

Taste is far too subtle to merit a 4. A reserved roasted malt flavor with unusually low bitterness, and a hint of smoke. Very smooth, but I've had locally brewed oatmeal stout that was both smooth AND full-flavored. Maybe this brewery's water is very soft..it tasted like reverse-osmosis water that someone had steeped malt in. Faintly sweet, but dare I say watery.

A bit of a disappointment; although it was smooth and drinkable, I need stout to have a bit of oomph in it. This dry brit seemed bored and distant, and I won't be seeing her again.

Poured from 500mL bottle to pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown almost black, much darker than you expect for the style. Nice puffy brown head that looks amazing. good head retention and lacing.

S: Smells faintly of roasted malts and chocolate with a lactose note.

T: Very similar to the smell but stronger. Nice roasted malts with a bit of chocolate and vanilla to it. The weird thing about this one is that it has some sort of metal taste, I noticed this in their double chocolate as well...

Overall: Mouthfeel is nice and creamy with a medium body. Drinkability is very good on this one, for a stout I could have a few and it's by no means overpowering.
